Hundreds of Black migrants, many from African countries, showed up at City Hall Tuesday demanding better treatment.

They say they just want a job, and basic shelter.

The migrants and their advocates say they’ve received unfair treatment and have been left forgotten. The rally at City Hall was a bid to get attention of state and federal lawmakers. They’re hoping changes could be made to immigration laws, and they could help contribute to the economy.

They said they want to work, and are trying to cut through the red tape that’s stopping them. They asked for local leaders to put more pressure on Washington, D.C. to make a change.

Dozens rallied on the steps outside City Hall, and hundreds gathered in support nearby while inside the City Council chambers, tears were shed for all Black migrants impacted by what advocates are calling unfair treatment.

“They are here to show you that they belong, and that they are here and that they should not be erased. Please listen to them,” said Patrice Lawrence, executive director of the UndocuBlack Network.

Tuesday, City Council members held their first meeting to learn more about the experiences Black migrants have been going through in New York.

Federal immigration laws are either slowing down the process for these migrants to get working permits or, depending on what country they come from, it makes them ineligible.

A family of 10 Afghan asylum seekers in the Netherlands has refused to leave their hotel accommodation and move into a large family home located by the authorities because the location isn’t right for them.

The Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) found the Shinwari couple, who have eight children aged between 2 and 12, a large house in the Zeeland village of Sint-Annaland.

It was reportedly large enough for the couple to relocate from their current accommodation at a hotel in Rotterdam.

The couple, however, refused the housing offer because they believed it to be too far for them to travel from Sint-Annaland to Rotterdam where one of the children is currently receiving semi-regular treatment for a cleft lip.

The trip is a little over an hour by car, and the COA insisted the distance is reasonable and comfortably within the distance radius the agency uses when determining the suitability of social housing.

“Rotterdam is within 50 kilometers as the crow flies,” explained COA lawyer Guusje Dijkman at a court hearing on the matter in Almelo on Tuesday. “It took the COA an incredible amount of effort to find such a large rental house,” he added.

The Afghan family is now taking legal action to prevent their eviction from the hotel accommodation with the family’s lawyer warning that such a move would have “disproportionate” consequences for those involved. “If the family ends up in the homeless shelter, they will almost certainly not be able to stay together,” Reshma Sahebdien told the court.

Counsel for the COA argued, however, that the family has a known “social network in Breda and Antwerp that they can call on,” and claimed that while such a situation would not be ideal, the family has brought it upon themselves after rejecting both adequate and sought-after alternative accommodation.

“It’s annoying and bad for them, but the COA’s concern is not infinite. The couple put themselves in this position,” Dijkman added.

The story has garnered national attention after being commented on by Dutch conservative politician Geert Wilders. He criticized the family for rejecting a house big enough to house the huge family and exposed the preferential treatment given to asylum seekers over Dutch citizens who sometimes wait years for social housing.

“Afghans are offered a huge rental house with priority, suitable for 10 people! But they refuse, it’s not good enough for these fortune seekers,” Wilders tweeted on Tuesday.

“Meanwhile, the Dutch are on the waiting list for 10, sometimes 20 years! Immediately expel those ungrateful freeloaders!” he added.

Illegal immigrants driven to cross the U.S.-Mexico border under President Joe Biden’s lax policies have helped to push the foreign-born population in the country to a new record high.

A new analysis of census data previewed by Secrets found that there are now 46.6 million legal and illegal foreign-born immigrants in the country, up 1.6 million over last year.

The analysis from the Center for Immigration Studies also said that the foreign-born population is now 14.2% of all people in the country counted by the census. That is the highest in 112 years.

“If present trends continue, the immigrant share is likely to surpass the all-time highs reached in 1890 (14.8%) and 1910 (14.7%) in the next few years,” said the report’s authors, Steven Camarota and Karen Zeigler.

Biden has dismantled much of former President Donald Trump’s efforts to slow that flow, including ending construction of a border wall and policies to both squeeze entries and deportations.

The Canadian government has reached a “milestone” $31-billion settlement to compensate indigenous children and families harmed by the “discriminatory underfunding” of the child welfare system on First Nations reservations.

Two in-principle agreements – relating to compensation for more than 200,000 affected children dating back to 1991, and to future reform of the system – represent the “largest settlement in Canadian history,” Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Marc Miller said on Tuesday.

Noting that “historic injustices require historic reparations,” Miller said that “no amount of money can reverse the harms experienced” and described the deals as an acknowledgement that successive governments had failed indigenous children.

Once finalized, the settlement will conclude a long-running legal battle, which began in 2007 with a complaint by the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society to the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal (CHRT). In 2016, the tribunal ruled that Ottawa had underfunded services for First Nations children relative to those for non-indigenous children.

The Canadian government appealed the CHRT verdict, which ordered it to pay compensation worth Can$40,000 (US$31,455) to every indigenous child who had been removed from their family through the system or been forced to leave their home.

After losing that appeal last year, the government entered formal negotiations with indigenous groups instead of taking the matter to the Supreme Court. The discussions concluded on New Year’s Eve. Justice Minister David Lametti said the government would withdraw its appeals once the agreements are finalized.

Describing the deal as “words on paper,” Cindy Blackstock, executive director of the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society, told Reuters that the Can$20 billion in funds earmarked for system reform may not tackle deep-rooted problems.

National Geographic magazine’s famed green-eyed “Afghan Girl” has arrived in Italy as part of the west’s evacuation of Afghans after the Taliban takeover of the country, the Italian government has said.

The office of the prime minister, Mario Draghi, said Italy organised the evacuation of Sharbat Gula after she asked to be helped to leave the country. The Italian government would help to get her integrated into life in Italy, the statement said on Thursday.

Gula gained international fame in 1984 as an Afghan refugee girl, after the war photographer Steve McCurry’s photograph of her, with piercing green eyes, was published on the cover of National Geographic. McCurry found her again in 2002.

A member of the notorious Rochdale grooming child rape gang has complained about his treatment in Britain at a deportation hearing, saying that he is barely “surviving” on state benefits.

Fifty-one-year-old Adil Khan from Pakistan, who was previously jailed for his role in the child rape gang in Rochdale, Greater Manchester after he impregnated a thirteen-year-old girl and trafficked another 15-year-old girl.

Khan was sentenced to eight years in prison in 2012, yet he was released early and has remained in the country despite years of promises from the government to deport him.

Alongside his fellow gang member Qari Abdul Rauf, 52, Khan has launched a series of taxpayer-funded appeals against their deportation to their native Pakistan.

Following reports that Rauf is still walking the streets of Rochdale, Home Secretary Priti Patel promised to “strain every sinew” to remove the child predators from the country.

Appearing before an immigration tribunal to discuss his case against deportation, Khan bemoaned his current life in Britain, claiming he has not been afforded his rights.

“I cannot exercise any rights in this country as an individual. I cannot do anything for my family, I’m just surviving on my son’s benefits,” he said through a translator per the BBC.

“I cannot take my son to school if it is raining, we cannot afford a taxi.

“The police informed me about a month ago that they have cancelled my driver’s licence, according to the Home Office instructions.”

The chair of the hearing, Judge Nehar Bird informed the child rapists that the tribunal was convened “to decide whether the Home Office decision to deport you back to Pakistan is right or wrong, in law”.

Complications over their deportations have arisen as both men were granted certificates from the government in Islamabad stating that they officially renounced their citizenship from Pakistan. However, the documents were issued in September of 2018, after they were already stripped of their UK citizenship.

The appeal is also attempting to cite Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights, which despite leaving the European Union, the UK is still bound by as it is an instrument of the Council of Europe which is separate — although closely tied — to the European Union.

In June, Khan claimed that he and his fellow child rapists were “not that big a criminal…We have not committed that big a crime.”

The convict then attempted to shift blame onto the media, saying: “The journalists have made our lives a living hell,” adding: “The journalists made us out to be big criminals.”

One of Khan’s victims said in April: “The fact they are appealing their sentences honestly makes me feel sick.”

Within a single decade, the number of Norwegian municipalities that spend more than half of their social assistance budget on people with an immigrant background has grown from 17 to 123. At the same time, the amount of social assistance paid to the same demographic has more than doubled, reaching $460 million.

While fewer than 1 in 5 of Norway’s inhabitants (about 17 percent) have an immigrant background, they now receive well over half (58 percent) of all the social financial assistance available in the country, new statistics have indicated.

On behalf of the national-conservative Progress Party, Statistics Norway has taken a closer look at the use of social benefits in Norwegian municipalities over the period 2009-2019. This includes all means of temporary support given to people unable to provide for their own subsistence.

Over the ten-year stretch, the number of welfare recipients with an immigrant background has increased over 70 percent, while recipients among the general population have become fewer. This coincided with a period of record-high immigration, including the 2015 migrant crisis, the newspaper Nettavisen reported.

In 2009, just over NOK 1.8 billion ($210 million) in social assistance was paid to people with an immigrant background. Ten years later, the number had more than doubled to NOK 4 billion ($460 million). This means that people with an immigrant background account for almost the entire increase in social assistance budgets across Norwegian municipalities.

In 2009, barely 17 municipalities in Norway spent more than half of their social assistance budget on people with an immigrant background. By 2019, this number had exploded to 123 municipalities. In Vik municipality in Western Norway, immigrants receive a record 89 percent of the available social assistance. In Oslo, three quarters of the social help (75 percent) goes to immigrants.

Vik municipality Councillor Øistein Søvik singled out a lower level of education as a common factor for receiving social benefits.

Norwegian Labour and Welfare Organisation (NAV) department director Jan Erik Grundtjernlien emphasised the role of the refugee crisis that led to unprecedented number of immigrants to Norway (over 31,000 asylum seekers in 2015), as well as the need for long-term qualifications in order to enter the labour market. Lastly, Grundtjernlien also stressed “greater challenges” faced by immigrants and their descendants, including increasingly stringent job requirements at the national level.

Former Immigration Minister Sylvi Listhaug, who chairs the Progress Party that ordered the survey, argued that increased immigration will lead to increased poverty.

“The Labour Party and the left-wing radical socialists keep talking about social differences, but they refuse to relate to reality. The truth is that increased immigration means increased poverty. It doesn’t help how many pillows you give out to people. Ultimately, people need to get to work,” Listhaug maintaied to Nettavisen.

It won’t lead to an increase in poverty as long as Norwegians are willing to work harder and harder to pay for all the welfare of these brown people.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell unveiled the Republican coronavirus relief plan on Monday.

Here is what we know about the bill, as Republican leaders release the details:

It would set enhanced federal unemployment insurance at 70% of a worker’s previous wages, replacing the $600 per week which states stopped paying out this week.

The GOP would set the benefit at a sum of $200 per week on top of what recipients would normally receive from states through September, slashing what they got from April through July. In October, the 70% replacement would take effect up to a maximum of $500 per week.

The proposal would send direct payments of $1,200 and $2,400 to individuals and couples, respectively. It would set the same qualifications as the checks approved in March: the payments started to phase out at an average of $75,000 in income per person, and individuals or couples making an average of $99,000 or more did not receive one. It would offer an additional $500 per dependent of any age.

The legislation would shield entities such as businesses, doctors and schools from lawsuits, except for cases of “gross negligence” or “willful misconduct.”

It would set aside $190 billion for Paycheck Protection Program loans. The bill would allow small businesses with fewer than 300 employees that have seen revenue fall by more than 50% to apply for a second round of aid. It would also authorize $100 billion for loans to seasonal businesses and companies in low-income Census tracts that can show revenue reduction of more than 50%.

The bill provides $105 billion to help schools reopen in the fall. Roughly $30 billion of that amount would go to colleges, according to Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Chairman Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn. Most of the money would go to schools physically reopening to help them with the costs associated with safely restarting.

It includes $16 billion to help states boost Covid-19 testing capacity, according to Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Richard Shelby, R-Ala.

Shelby said it would put $26 billion toward the development of Covid-19 vaccines and therapeutics.

The plan includes 100% deductability of business meals, according to Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C.

It includes several tax credits, including an enhanced employee retention credit and a credit for expenses such as upgrades to workplaces and testing that help businesses operate safely.

She says on her website in a section about her support for chain migration:

The Manchester Arena bomber used government benefits provided to his mother to purchase bomb-making equipment, a jury heard at the Old Bailey in London.

In the trial of the Manchester bomber’s brother, Hashem Abedi, the court heard that the pair’s mother, Samia Abedi, was receiving over £2,000 a month in government benefits and that her bank card was used to purchase an industrial battery and other bomb-making equipment.

The welfare payments of about £550 per week continued to pour into Ms Abedi’s account until May 19th in 2017, just three days before the attack on the Manchester Arena that left 22 people dead, reports The Telegraph. The court also heard that the Islamist’s mother continued to receive the welfare payments even after she had left the United Kingdom for Libya.

The bomber himself, Salman Abedi, received £3,260 in January of 2017 from the government from the state-backed Student Loans Company. The jihadist reported that he had lost his bank card and reported fraud after a series of £790, £710, £800, and £700 withdrawals were made on the 23rd of January.

“I think that he believes in terrorism, that’s what I thought,” Forjani said of Hashem per the BBC.

Hashem Abedi, the brother of the suicide bomber, has denied involvement in the attack on the Manchester Arena in which 22 people were killed and hundreds more were left injured after his jihadist brother detonated a large explosive device in the auditorium full of young adults and children who were attending an Ariana Grande concert.

The court heard last month that the brother of the dead Islamist is just as guilty for the act of terror that inflicted psychological and physical trauma on at least 1,000 people.

“The surviving brother is just as responsible for the crimes which resulted in so much death, serious injury and damage following the detonation of the bomb on the 22 May 2017 as his brother… The defendant through his conduct encouraged and assisted his brother Salman to carry out the attack,” said the prosecutor in the case.
