Wearing a face mask has become about making a political statement rather than public health, a government scientist has said.

Prof Clifford Stott, of Keele University, told LBC: “We know that wearing masks, particularly in crowded, poorly ventilated environments, has a big impact on the levels of transmission that can take place.

“But also I think, particularly now, wearing a mask is also communicating to others about a sense of responsibility – and I think that’s a key issue in mask-wearing now, unfortunately.”

Prof Stott, a member of the Scientific Pandemic Insights Group on Behaviours (SPI-B), added: “I think, unfortunately, it’s become almost a little bit politicised whether one wears one or not, which is I think a shame.”

He said transport networks mandating the wearing of masks assisted him in “not feeling awkward wearing one”.

Boris Johnson has said people should still wear a mask when in crowded areas, despite the laws on coverings being scrapped last month.

According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), 92 per cent of people said they wore a mask in the last week.

Less than a third of those – 31 per cent – said they wore one on public transport, compared to 92 per cent of people who did so while shopping. Half of 16 to 29-year-olds said they wore a face mask on buses and trains, while only 22 per cent of the over-70s did so.

Prof Stott added: “I think the data that we do have show that the majority of the public do want to retain some legal infrastructure around there – so I think the latest data was around about 67 per cent of the population.

“I think this is a broader issue about how the Government is communicating that transmission no longer matters. I think the argument that we should be having here is that it’s about the way that the broader relaxation of the Government’s position over the virus is effectively communicating to people that transmission is no longer that important.

“Yet at the same time, of course, we’re seeing this rise and very heavy spread of the delta variant.”

A man has died after allegedly being shot by an 11-year-old in Alton, New Hampshire, on Friday morning.

Officials say 50-year-old Lizette Eckert was shot and killed Friday morning on her property in Alton. Her husband, James, was shot and critically injured. James Eckert died Friday night.

After an autopsy on Lizette Eckert, the New Hampshire chief medical examiner confirmed the cause of death was a single gunshot wound to the head and ruled the case a homicide. James Eckert will be autopsied Monday.

An 11-year-old is arrested and charged with the crime.

Family friends tell WBZ the couple and their three kids moved to Alton, New Hampshire, from Maine just a few years ago. They have one daughter and two sons and home-schooled all their children on the family farm.

Many of the details in this case will not become public because a juvenile is charged with the crime.

A judge on Thursday gave a South Jersey couple less than a day to hand over what’s left of the $400,000 they raised through a GoFundMe campaign for Johnny Bobbitt Jr., the homeless man who last fall gave the woman his last $20 to help her out in a pinch.

Superior Court Judge Paula T. Dow in Mount Holly ordered Kate McClure, 28, and Mark D’Amico, 35, to transfer the money into an escrow account by Friday afternoon and hire a forensic accountant to review the financial records within 10 days.

The money will be transferred to an account controlled by Cozen O’Connor PC, Bobbitt’s pro bono attorneys. The funds could not be used until the court determined how they would be managed. Dow did not appoint a guardian to oversee the fund, but one could be appointed later.

The hearing came after Bobbitt’s lawyers filed a lawsuit this week against McClure and D’Amico, alleging that the two committed fraud and conspiracy by taking large amounts of the donations to “enjoy a lifestyle they could not afford” and using the account as “their personal piggy bank.”

The filing also asks for an injunction that would prevent more of the money from being spent.

Exactly how much of the money is left was unclear Thursday.

Earlier this month, D’Amico told a reporter that $200,000 remained, and that it was in the couple’s savings account. This week, D’Amico told NBC Today host Megyn Kelly that more than $150,000 was left.
