Austria is reviewing the status of Syrian refugees who arrived less than five years ago, Chancellor Karl Nehammer said on Thursday after media reports that some had been notified by letter that they “no longer have to fear political persecution”.

Nehammer, a conservative who is trying to form a new coalition government while under fire from the far right, pounced on the fall of Bashar al-Assad on Dec. 8, saying the same day that the security situation in Syria should be reviewed so as to allow deportations there.

Since then he and his caretaker government have clarified that their initial focus will be on voluntary deportations, with those volunteering to return home being offered 1,000 euros ($1,037). Austria is also among more than a dozen European countries to suspend the processing of Syrians’ asylum claims.

“Austria … is now reviewing the eligibility for protection of Syrians who have been in the country for less than 5 years,” Nehammer said on X.

Austrian law allows the authorities to revoke a refugee’s status in some cases within five years of it being granted. Syrians are the biggest group of asylum seekers in Austria.

Nehammer’s People’s Party (OVP) has made a hard line on immigration one of its hallmarks, to the point that the far-right Freedom Party (FPO) has accused it of stealing its ideas.

The United Nations’ refugee agency said it was “clearly premature” to initiate such proceedings.

“They should only be initiated if the situation in the country of origin has fundamentally changed and a safe, permanent return would in fact be possible for those affected,” the UNHCR’s Austria chief Christoph Pinter said in a statement.

“That is definitely not the case at the moment.”

That’s the UN.

But the ECHR makes all of these decisions, and there is no way around it within the current framework of “EU law.”

Obviously, I don’t support refugees and think it is better that they should just die, but insofar as the concept is valid, it’s going to be a lot more valid in a few months when the Syrian “rebel alliance” breaks at the seams.

This of it for a minute: if overthrowing Assad meant the refugees are going back, the EU would never have supported overthrowing Assad.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has condemned the new migrant decree enacted by Italy saying it is concerned about the much heavier fines for migrant transport NGOs.

The UNHCR responded to the decree, which was passed into law earlier this week, defending the migrant transport NGOs for picking up migrants off the coast of Libya, L’Express reports.

“Imposing fines or other penalties on commanders may deter or prevent private vessels from conducting rescue activities at a time when European states have virtually withdrawn from rescue efforts in the central Mediterranean,” the agency said.

The new decree, which was drafted by populist Italian interior minister Matteo Salvini, sees fines for vessels entering Italian waters without permission increase to penalties of up to one million euros from the previous fine limit of 50,000 euros.

Praising the migrant transport NGOs, the UNHCR said: “The commitment and humanity that motivates them should not be criminalised or stigmatised.”

The UNHCR is not the only organisation to speak out against the new decree. The European Commission has stated that it was also concerned with the new laws and a spokesman said the Commission would be examining the laws to “verify its compatibility with European law”.

The UNHCR is currently being run by an Italian named Filippo Grandi.

The anti-mass migration policies of Matteo Salvini have led to a dramatic reduction in the number of migrants entering Italy illegally and have also contributed to a decline in the number of drowning deaths.

That latter part is rather unfortunate, but nobody’s perfect.

Salvini’s policies have also been highly popular with Italian voters as his League party has soared in the polls since they formed a coalition government with the populist Five Star Movement last year.

While the League managed to climb in the polls, the Five Stars declined and recent conflicts between the two have led to a government crisis.

So people are actually supportive of politicians who follow their interests.

Former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Guterres has been officially appointed as the next UN secretary-general.

He will become the world’s top diplomat on 1 January when Ban Ki-moon’s second five-year term ends.

Mr Guterres, 67, who led the UN refugee agency UNHCR for 10 years, was chosen from among 13 candidates last week.

He told the BBC that ending the civil war in Syria would be his biggest challenge.

“I believe it is the international community’s first priority is to be able to end this conflict and use this momentum created by it to try to address all the other conflicts that are interlinked,” he told the BBC’s chief international correspondent Lyse Doucet.

He said the world was facing a dangerous time and he wanted to see people across the globe working together to achieve a safer future.

“I hope people will understand that it’s better to put aside different opinions, different interests and to understand that there is a common, vital interest to put an end to these conflicts, because that is absolutely central if you want to live in a world where a minimum of securities are established, where people can live a normal life,” he said.

Mr Guterres, who trained as an engineer, entered politics in 1976 in Portugal’s first democratic election after the “Carnation Revolution” that ended five decades of dictatorship.

As head of the UNHCR refugee agency from 2005 to 2015, he led the agency through some of the world’s worst refugee crises, including those in Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq.

During that time, he repeatedly appealed to Western states to do more to help refugees fleeing the conflicts.

A top UN official has called for the EU to begin enforcing quotas on the number of “asylum seeking” parasitical welfare rapists each member state must allow inside of their base.

On the same day that the Danish parliament discussed its criticised tighter restrictions on asylum seekers, the UN high commissioner for refugees (UNHCR), Antonio Guterres, was in Stockholm calling on the EU to force its nations to more equitably handle a spike in asylum seekers.

“We are ready to support political initiatives within Europe, for instance, aiming in some situations to have forms of quota distribution,” Guterres told reporters on Tuesday.

He said that while asylum seekers generally enter Europe through Greece and Italy, nearly half of all asylum requests last year were presented in Germany and Sweden, a sign of the continent’s lopsided distribution.

The rush of refugees into Europe comes as the number of people driven from their homes by conflict and crisis topped 50 million, a first since World War II, according to the UNHCR.

“Something is wrong in the way the system is working,” said Guterres, a former Portuguese prime minister, calling for “a European solidarity mechanism”.

“Quota systems are always an extreme solution,” he added. “Ideally, the system would work naturally to produce a fair share among European countries.”

The measure is aimed at countries which are attempting to protect their nation’s identity, and protect their women from getting gang-raped on the street as they are in Sweden.

A key target of this quota system would be Denmark, where the people are refusing to play ball, a recent poll showing that 50% are demanding less Moslems.

Depending on who you ask, the fact that 50 percent of Danes want to limit the number of Muslims in the country is either “common sense” or a sign of waning tolerance.
Every other Dane thinks that there should be a limit to how many Muslims live in Denmark according to a YouGov poll conducted for Metroxpress.

When asked how many Muslims should live in the country, 50 percent of respondents set an upper limit and four in four respondents, that limit was no higher than five percent of Denmark’s total population.

While 42 percent said that there should be no limit and that people shouldn’t be categorised by their religion, seven percent of respondents said there should be no Muslims at all.
A spokesperson for the anti-immigration Danish People’s Party said that the results reflected Danes’ “common sense”.

“I see the results as a sign that Danes have a common sense outlook and big worries about what is happening with our country and the consequences of mass immigration,” Martin Henriksen told Metroxpress.
