Israel has set out its case to the UN security council for a full assault on Houthi forces in Yemen, claiming the Iranian-backed group now represents a well-armed terrorist army that threatens not just the regional economy but the entire global order.

The Israeli foreign minister, Gideon Sa’ar, also called for the Houthis to be designated as a foreign terrorist organisation, a step that may make it more difficult for Iran to provide material support without facing further economic sanctions.

Danny Danon, the Israeli ambassador to the UN – who had called for the UN security council meeting to discuss the recent escalation in Houthi attacks on Israel – said the Houthis “were nothing more than part of Iran’s war against peace”. The group, he said, had an annual budget of $1.2bn (£0.95bn) and came dangerously close to strangling the Suez canal by its attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea off the coast of Yemen.

Well, someone appears to be in a “war against peace.” That’s a good term.

But I don’t think it’s Iran.

In the last year, Iran has invaded none of its neighbors, while the Jews have invaded three separate neighbors and bombed many other countries.

He added that “millions of Israelis are waking up every night to the sound of sirens across the country”, accusing the Houthis of launching 300 attacks on Israel this year.

He said: “Let me make one thing absolutely clear; we have had enough. Israel will not stand by and wait for the world to react. We will defend our citizens.” The Houthis were no longer a regional threat but a threat to the world order, he said.

While almost all security council members at Monday’s meeting condemned the Houthi attacks on Israel mounted a week ago, many also condemned the Israeli threat to Yemeni civilians represented by the air raids on key power stations, the air traffic control tower at the airport in the capital of Sana’a, and ports which are critical to the delivery of aid. Nine Yemeni civilians were killed in the attacks that Israel said were retaliation for what Danon described as “a relentless Houthi bombardment of Israeli population centres”.

Barbara Woodward, the UK envoy to the UN, reiterated Israel’s right to self-defence but warned: “Israel’s action must be consistent with their obligations under international law including protection of civilians.”

She said she was “concerned by the attack on Sana’a airport that endangered Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus”. The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) was at Sana’a airport when Israeli warplanes struck on Thursday. A crew member from Tedros’s plane was injured in the strike and Tedros said he and his colleagues “escaped death narrowly”.

On Saturday, Russia took over the presidency of the UN’s top security body, which rotates every month.

The last time Moscow held the post was in February 2022, when its troops launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Reuters reports.

On Friday, the Kremlin said it planned to “exercise all its rights” in the role.

The US has urged Russia to “conduct itself professionally” when it assumes the role, saying there is no means to block Moscow from the post.

The UN Security council has been meeting in secret for two days, planning action against Russia, which may in fact result in a NATO invasion of Ukraine and open war with occupying Russian forces.

They have now agreed to hold an open and televised meeting.

Ukraine’s U.N. ambassador, Yuriy Sergeyev, said Russia has rejected Ukraine’s proposal to hold immediate bilateral consultations.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said earlier Saturday that he is “gravely concerned about the deterioration of the situation” in Ukraine. He spoke later by telephone with Putin.

A Ban spokesman delivered the statement Saturday afternoon as members of the Security Council met in an emergency closed-door session for the second straight day on the rapidly developing events in Ukraine’s Crimea region.

The Security Council decided to hold the open meeting after struggling behind closed doors to reach agreement on how to meet. Some members wanted open, or public consultations, on Ukraine, which Russia initially opposed.

Ban’s statement called for “full respect for and preservation of the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine” and demanded the “immediate restoration of calm and direct dialogue between all concerned.”

British Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant said the meeting is to determine “what justification Russia claims to have” for its de facto military takeover of the strategic Crimea region.

As a permanent member of the Security Council, Russia has veto power and can block the U.N.’s most powerful body from adopting any resolution criticizing or sanctioning Moscow.

Outside the council chamber, Ukraine’s U.N. ambassador called on countries to do everything possible to stop Russia’s “aggression.”

“The Russian Federation brutally violated the basic principles of the Charter of the United Nations,” Sergeyev told reporters.

During a break, an exasperated Russian U.N. Ambassador Vitaly Churkin told reporters, “We are ready for serious discussions.“

Ban was flying to Geneva on Saturday where he planned to meet the following day with his special envoy Robert Serry, the Netherlands’ first ambassador to Ukraine.

This is absolutely shaping up to be a World War scenario.  I don’t know if that is going to happen.  And I don’t know if it would be a good thing or a bad thing.  It would certainly clear some things up.
