Tunisian anti-terrorist investigators are handling the case of a leading advocate for migrants who has been taken into custody, in what the head of a rights group said was a troubling first for the country.

Abdallah Said, a Tunisian of Chadian origin, was questioned along with the secretary general and treasurer of his association, Enfants de la Lune, said Romdhane Ben Amor, the spokesperson for the Tunisian Forum for Social and Economic Rights.

According to La Presse newspaper, which is close to the Tunisian government, Said’s association is suspected of receiving foreign funds “to assist sub-Saharan migrants to enter illegally on to Tunisian soil”. Tunisia is one of the main launching points for boats carrying people trying to cross the Mediterranean to seek better lives in Europe.

In May the Tunisian president, Kais Saied, lashed out at organisations that defended the rights of migrants, calling their leaders “traitors and mercenaries”. Saied, who has overseen a sweeping crackdown on undocumented black people living in Tunisia, won a second term as president last month in a vote with turnout of just 28.8%.

Tunisia has received large funds from the EU in exchange for help with curbing small boat crossings to Europe, under an agreement signed last year.

Ben Amor said this was the first time authorities had used anti-terrorist investigators against associations specialising in migration issues. The arrest was “a dangerous signal” and part of “a new wave of even tougher repression” against migration activists after a crackdown in May, he said.

In 2023, the Guardian revealed how thousands of people from sub-Saharan Africa had been forcibly returned by Tunisian officers to remote desert regions where some died of thirst. Last month a Guardian investigation revealed abuses by EU-funded security forces in Tunisia, including allegations that members of the Tunisian national guard were raping migrant women and beating children.

Well, if they didn’t come to Tunisia, they wouldn’t get expelled to a desert.

A North African beauty influencer died suddenly at the age of 36 after suffering a suspected heart attack while on vacation in Malta.

Farah El Kadhi, of Tunisia, was on board a yacht near the harbor town of Msida when she was discovered unconscious on Monday, the Daily Mail reported.

The influencer, who was also an architect for Key Concept, was rushed to Mater Dei Hospital before being pronounced dead.

El Kadhi had “no signs of any visible injuries” according to the Times of Malta, though sources told the outlet that a magisterial inquiry has been opened into the cause of her death and an official autopsy will be carried out.

Another Tunisian-born influencer, Soulayma Hneynia, said that her friend died “peacefully in her sleep” after a suspected heart attack.

Hneynia, who lives in Malta, described El Kadhi as a “truly wonderful person, known for her kindness, generosity, and warmth.”

“Her positive spirit touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing her,” she added.

Probably, the correct take, is that wanting historical accuracy in film is not political, while wanting to remove historical accuracy and just make everyone black is political.

After a similar controversy on race and representation in nearby Egypt over a Netflix docudrama about Cleopatra, Tunisian newspapers, social media and even the halls of parliament have seen discussion on the skin tone of the long-dead leader.

French-language Tunisian news outlet La Presse published an article saying the casting created “a historical error”, while on social media, some users accused Netflix of promoting “woke culture”.

It’s actually “an historical error,” but okay.

An online petition signed by 1,300 people urged Netflix to “cancel its pseudo-documentary” and called on the ministry of culture to “take action against the attempt to steal our history”.

“It’s fiction; it’s their right. Hannibal is a historical figure, even if we’re all proud that he’s Tunisian … What could we do?” said Guermazi. “What matters to me is that they shoot even one sequence in Tunisia and mention it. We want Tunisia to become a platform for foreign films again.”

Of course it’s a woman saying that. As if someone needed to explain that they have a right to cast whoever they want in their film. People have rights to do all kinds of things, it doesn’t mean you don’t have a right to condemn their choices.

Earlier this year, Netflix cast Adele James, an actor of mixed heritage, as Cleopatra, which prompted the Egyptian antiquities ministry to publish a statement declaring that the pharaonic leader had “white skin and Hellenistic characteristics”.

The Mediterranean island of Lampedusa is a first point of arrival for people seeking asylum or looking to keep moving north to other European countries.

A flotilla of flimsy boats, crowded with migrants and launched from Tunisia, overwhelmed a tiny southern Italian island on Wednesday, taxing the coast guard’s capability to intercept the smugglers’ vessels and sorely testing Premier Giorgia Meloni’s pledge to thwart illegal migration.

Compounding the political pressure on Italy’s first far-right leader were vows by France and Germany to rebuff migrants who arrive by sea on Italian shores, and in defiance of European Union asylum system rules, head northward to try to find jobs or relatives in those and other northern countries on the continent.

Starting early on Tuesday, the unseaworthy, unstable iron boats came one after the other in what appeared to be almost a procession to onlookers on Lampedusa, a fishing and tourist island south of Sicily.

Some 6,800 migrants came in a span of just over 24 hours, a number that is a few hundred higher than the isle’s full-time population.

Provoking the surge in numbers was a bottleneck in Tunisia’s ports of several days caused by rough seas that meant the smugglers couldn’t launch their boats, according to Italian authorities.

With the island’s sole migrant residence having a capacity of about 450 beds, authorities scrambled to transfer the migrants via commercial ferries or a coast guard ship to Sicily, or Calabria in the southern toes of the Italian mainland.

Francesca Basile, a spokeswoman for the Italian Red Cross on Lampedusa, said they were making a “huge effort” to provide “basic services” for the 6,000 migrants at the centre on Lampedusa.

Italy needs migration, Giorgia Meloni said as she sought to win support from African nations on a plan to curb human trafficking into Europe.

The hard-Right prime minister, who came to power on a pledge to block migrant boats in the Mediterranean, softened her rhetoric in an attempt to build alliances with the nations migrants leave or pass through.

Ms Meloni convened a summit, of more than 20 nations and top EU officials, in Rome after largely failing to control migrant flows in the first months of her term.

Addressing an audience that included Tunisia’s president as well as representatives from Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East, she said that everyone was harmed by illegal migration.

“No one benefits from this,” she said, “except criminal groups who get rich at the expenses of the most fragile and use their strength even against the governments.”

Ms Meloni proposed working more closely with countries of origin to manage migrant flows and fight criminal traffickers.

However, she said that she was open to creating more legal routes into her country as “Europe and Italy need immigration”.

Earlier this month, Italy pledged to issue 425,000 new work visas for non-EU nationals from 2023 to 2025, increasing the number of permits available each year to a high of 165,000 in 2025. In 2019, before Covid struck, Italy issued just 30,850 visas.

Critics on the Right have accused Ms Meloni, the leader of the ruling Brothers of Italy party, of abandoning her principles after taking power.

The Italian prime minister told the conference that Western arrogance had hampered finding a solution to migrant flows, which have surged this year.

More than 83,000 migrants have landed in Italy this year, compared with about 34,000 in the same period in 2022.

Elsewhere on Sunday, Pope Francis called on European and African governments to help migrants trapped in desert areas in north Africa, and to ensure that the Mediterranean was never again “a theatre of death” for those attempting to cross.

Tunisia should halt collective expulsions of sub-Saharan African migrants and urgently enable access to humanitarian services for those the government sent to a dangerous area of the Tunisia-Libya border, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said on Thursday.

Tunisia has removed hundreds of the migrants to a desolate area along the border, a Tunisian rights group and a lawmaker said on Wednesday, with witnesses reporting dozens more put on outbound trains following days of violence.

Disturbances between migrants and residents went on for a week in the port of Sfax, and one Tunisian was killed. Residents complained of disorderly behaviour by migrants and migrants complained of racist harassment.

Thousands of undocumented migrants have flocked to Sfax in recent months with the goal of setting off for Europe in boats run by human traffickers, amounting to an unprecedented migration crisis for Tunisia.

The people expelled were of many African nationalities:

Ivorian, Cameroonian, Malian, Guinean, Chadian, Sudanese, Senegalese, and included 29 children and three pregnant women, HRW said.

“Not only is it unconscionable to abuse people and abandon them in the desert, but collective expulsions violate international law,” said Lauren Seibert, refugee and migrant rights researcher at HRW.

There has been a surge in migration across the Mediterranean from Tunisia in north Africa this year after a crackdown by Tunis on migrants from sub-Saharan Africa living in the country illegally and reports of racist attacks.

Tunisia is considering becoming a member of the BRICS economic bloc, the spokesman for the pro-presidential ‘July 25 Movement’ told Russia’s RIA Novosti news agency on Sunday.

Mahmoud bin Mabrouk cited unnamed sources in the North African country’s government as saying the option of joining the alliance – comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – is being considered among the other possibilities.

“I have information that Tunisia is seriously considering joining the BRICS group,” bin Mabrouk said.

Earlier this week, Tunisian President Kais Saied spoke out against “foreign diktats” from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which is in stalled talks over a bailout package for the cash-stripped nation.

The head of state highlighted that the terms of a $2 billion loan deal proposed by the Washington-based organisation would worsen the poverty crisis in the heavily indebted country.

The deal, which was supposed to be approved in December 2022, was postponed after Tunisia failed to meet key commitments. The IMF has pushed the government to remove state subsidies on basic goods, including food and energy, and reduce the public wage bill.

Hundreds of Sub-Saharan African migrants are reportedly being flown out of the country shortly after Tunisian President Kais Saied said that Tunisia was facing an immigration crisis, which he described as a “plot” by foreign actors and nations designed to change Tunisia’s demographics and dilute its Arab and Islamic heritage.

About 300 Ivorians and Malians were repatriated on March 4, with the embassies that arranged their flights home stating that their citizens are being subjected to attacks following the president’s speech. Other African embassies are also reportedly flying out their citizens.

Traitors who are working for foreign countries and shady parties are targeting the Tunisian state, said Saied last month. “Today, they are speaking about the issue of (Sub-Saharan) African (migrants), and we’re proud of our African identity. We helped them during the Covid-19 pandemic, distributing medicines. But today they want to change the demographic composition of Tunisia. It’s a plot and they got paid for it, like they got paid in other fields to attack the state.”

The Tunisian leader had said in February that “urgent measures” were needed to tackle the issue of irregular immigrants from Sub-Saharan countries, “with their violence, crimes and unacceptable practices.”

“The undeclared goal of the successive waves of illegal immigration is to consider Tunisia a purely African country that has no affiliation to the Arab and Islamic nations,” he added.

“Those who are behind this phenomenon are trafficking in human beings while claiming to defend human rights,” Saied said.

Since his remarks, a sizeable number of the 21,000 Sub-Saharan Africans officially registered in Tunisia, many of them in irregular situations, have now lost their jobs and homes, according to La Croix. Police and officials are stepping up an anti-immigration push, resulting in dozens being arrested during police checks and placed in detention. NGOs have claimed that Tunisian “militias” are also “hunting” and beating up migrants.

Between the president’s remarks and actions by authorities, it appears Saied is achieving many of the goals he outlined in his speech, with many migrants fleeing the country. It is unclear what the long-term implications of the migrant crackdown are, but Tunisia will undoubtedly be seen as a country that is unfriendly to migrants for some time to come.

Tunisia’s President Kais Saied denounced undocumented sub-Saharan African immigration to his country on Tuesday, saying in comments criticised by rights groups that it was aimed at changing Tunisia’s demographic make-up.

Recent social media campaigns in Tunisia have urged authorities to stop African migrants travelling through Tunisia on their way to Europe or settling in the country, as thousands have done.

Tunisian authorities have this month cracked down on migrants, detaining dozens of them.

Saied said in his comments that parties, whom he did not name, had over the past decade settled African migrants in Tunisia in return for money.

Black Tunisians have a long history in the country, making up 10% to 15% of the population, and rights groups have said the country has not done enough to address racism.

Tunisia is 98% Arab, so I presume they’re counting blacks who are there illegally in order to move to Europe, and even counting those, it’s probably not 10%.
