Mohammed Fares Maroush signed up to fight the Assad regime as an Islamic rebel, but wound up beheaded — by his fellow warriors.

An al Qaeda-linked rebel group in Syria has apologized for beheading one of their own, after other members of the loosely knit alliance of rebels recognized his decapitated head in an online video,BBC News reported.

In the video, members of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) proudly display the head of who they thought was a member of President Bashar Assasd’s forces, when in reality they had executed one of their own commanders.

Yeah, he looks genuine, posing in his bedroom.
You don’t get much more absurd than this ‘White’ man who thinks he’s a Muslim Jihadi. Though he does look really hardcore with make-up on posing for a magazine shoot.

Another Islamist rebel group, Harakat Ahrar al-Sham, noticed the error, which prompted a spokesman for the guilty organization to say that Allah forgives those who accidentally kill a believer.

In the fog of war, Fares Maroush is reported to have offered said prayers after being wounded that indicated he was a Shia, rather than Sunni, Muslim. His captors, Sunnis, then wrongly assumed his allegiance was with the Assad regime.

Syria Rebels Parade Child Hostages On YouTube https://www.anglinarchive.com/2013/10/11/syria-rebels-parade-child-hostages-on-youtube/ Fri, 11 Oct 2013 00:00:00 +0000 Islamist fighters systematically shot dead people in their beds in what could amount to a crime against humanity, HRW says.

Rebel forces in Syria have killed at least 190 civilians and seized dozens of child hostages, who they have paraded in a video posted on YouTube, Human Rights Watch says

Fighters burned villages, threw bodies in mass graves and kidnapped women and children in acts described as likely “crimes against humanity” by HRW.

Witnesses gave harrowing accounts of family members being executed in their beds during an attack on August 4.

One man said he was forced to flee, leaving his paralysed son and wife to die at the hands of armed rebels.

A 105-page report by the New York based human rights group said the findings “strongly suggest” crimes against humanity were committed in the rural Latakia area.

HRW said it conducted an on-scene investigation and interviewed more than 35 people, including survivors and fighters from both sides.

One child said: “My mum was here in the house with me. She came out of the house first, and I was behind her.

“We saw the three fighters just in front of us, and then we fled on foot down behind the house and into the valley.

“The three fighters that I saw were all dressed in black. They were shooting at us from two different directions. They had machine guns and were using snipers.

Fighting raged through the picturesque mountain village of Maaloula, near Damascus, on Thursday, as the regime launched a counter-attack against the rebels.

“They entered the main square and smashed a statue of the Virgin Mary,” said one resident of the area, speaking by phone and too frightened to give his name. “They shelled us from the nearby mountain. Two shells hit the St Thecla convent.”

Maaloula, tucked into the honey-coloured cliffs of a mountain range north of Damascus and on a “tentative” list of applicants for Unesco world heritage status, is associated with the earliest days of Christianity.

St Thecla, who is supposedly buried in the convent, was a follower of St Paul who fled to the village in Syria to avoid marriage, having taken an oath of chastity. It is said that the cleft of rock in which the convent is placed opened up to allow her to escape her pursuers.

The inhabitants are mostly Melkite Greek Catholic and Orthodox Christians, but have historically lived peacefully alongside a Sunni Muslim minority. It is one of only three places in the world where Western Aramaic, a dialect of the language spoken by Christ, is still used.

Until recently, the town had managed to remain mostly unaffected by the civil war that has already claimed more than 100,000 lives. A visit by The Daily Telegraph last year found it ringed by government checkpoints but suffering from the lack of pilgrims and tourists who are normally vital to its economy.

In the early hours of Wednesday morning, rebel groups, a mix of the extremist Jabhat al-Nusra and the more moderate Free Syrian Army (FSA), attacked with full force.
