In a series of warnings by the Swedish National Museum, classic 19th-century art is presented as patriarchal, reactionary, and borderline dangerous due to alleged features of racism, sexism, and nationalism.

The Swedish National Museum has added politically-flavoured warning texts to swaths of its collection.

Most of the warnings concern classic 19th-century paintings and the Nordic national romanticism movement in particular, which prompted Leif Gren, an archaeologist at the Swedish National Heritage Board, to accuse the museum of placing “facilitating pointers” to provide the public with “misleading politicisation” in an opinion piece for Vestmanlands Läns Tidning.

According to Gren, 19th-century “bourgeois art” is presented as rife with “deception, falsehood, political manipulation, sexism, and racism”. Among other things, 19th-century art is portrayed as patriarchal, reactionary and borderline dangerous, disregarding “the strong liberal climate” of that era, Gren noted. By contrast, 20th-century art, which increasingly embraces the Social Democratic tradition, is displayed as cultural success, he noted, which moves the focus away from art itself and prevents visitors from thinking for themselves.

For instance, this is how the National Museum now presents Gustaf Cederström’s world-famous painting “Bringing Home the Body of King Carl XII of Sweden”: “The populist and nationalist view of Swedishness, which is used politically today, is based on the idea of a statically idealised and constructed past. The idea that there is a historical time and place to look back on, where everything was in a certain way, is not true”.

Several warning signs label 19th-century art as expressions of racism. The term “racialisation” is also used as a matter of course, despite it not appearing until the 1960s. According to Gren, the reasoning is mostly based on so-called “guilt by association”. For instance, Carl Wilhelmson’s classic painting “Church People in a Boat” is given a racist slant because it was made at a time when “anthropological racial research” was being performed.

“Ever since Romanticism, the idea of inherited popular characteristics characterised German and Nordic thinking. The rural population, farmers and fishermen, who lived according to older cultural patterns and whose bodies were marked by hard toil, were allowed to exemplify the Nordic national types. From the mid-19th century that perspective was strengthened by the anatomical museum sample collections that received an anthropological racial research focus”, the National Museum said in its warning.

Likewise, a sexist agenda is being attributed to 19th-century paintings of an erotic nature that focus on the female body as an object of art, with warnings honing in on “the tradition of the male gaze”, which presents the female figure as “prey”.

In the words of Gren, the museum’s agenda is to convey the idea that 19th-century society was deceived and patriarchal, whereas art is presented “as a highly oppressive tool in an unnatural state of society”.

Members of the Somali community complained that the authorities’ information about the spread of coronavirus was insufficient and came too late. To rectify this, materials in 15 languages are now being distributed.

The city of Stockholm has reported a rise in COVID-19 cases, noting that residents of so-called vulnerable areas are over-represented among the newly-infected.

At least six of the 15 who died from the coronavirus have a Somali background, national broadcaster SVT reported.

To better reach to the growing migrant community, national broadcaster SVT has started texting their news broadcasts in Arabic. SVT cited “the great need for information due to the coronavirus epidemic”.

Several other media, including Expressen, also produced Arabic and Somali material to accommodate non-Swedish readers.

The real question here is – why do Swedes expect Arabs and Somalis to learn Swedish instead of the other way around?

As the new year began, 98,107 people were awaiting a decision on their citizenship application.

Sweden has had a below-replacement fertility rate since 1968, and since then the population has grown by almost a quarter.

That would seem like a bad thing for some people, but those people are Nazis.

Gaining citizenship in Sweden requires applicants to be legally resident in the country for between three and five years, depending on where they come from and whether or not they are living with a Swedish spouse or partner.

Currently, it has fairly generous requirements, asking only that applicants fulfill the criteria for legal residence (again, these differ slightly depending on personal situation and country of origin) and have “conducted themselves well” in Sweden, which means no serious criminal record or debts.

There is no test on the Swedish language or society, but this could change after the government launched an inquiry last year into introducing a language requirement

And the crazy thing is that Sweden is the rule here, not the exception.

So where did Sweden’s new citizens come from? The top country of nationality for those who received citizenship was Syria, accounting for 26,339 of the approvals. That was followed by the UK with a record 4,291 Brits becoming Swedish, and Afghanistan with 3,829.

When looking at the people who became Swedish last year, slightly more were men; 41,231 compared to 33,693 women. A total of 33,484 children became Swedish along with 41,440 adults.

Because a single case can include more than one person – a parent and child, for example – the total number of citizenship cases which were included was slightly lower, at 64,176.

Of these cases, 41,800 involved people who underwent the process of ‘naturalization’, the most common way to get citizenship which applies to foreigners becoming Swedish.

A further 22,376 became citizens through the process of anmälan, which most often applies to children born in Sweden who then live there for at least three years with permanent residents. People in this category do not need to apply for Swedish citizenship, but simply inform authorities they are taking it.

And 567 cases applied to Swedes born abroad who had never lived in Sweden, but were granted citizenship, for example by proving their connection to a Swedish parent. This is known as bibehållande, and if we include such cases when counting Sweden’s ‘new’ citizens, the number of approved cases rises to 64,743.

No sane country allows racial aliens to colonize it.

And even with people from the same race, you have to put some limitations – I wouldn’t want any hecking Swedes in my country at all to be honest.

“I think there are two reasons. We have been generous and received many new arrivals, but basically it is also a demographic problem. We have an aging population and the municipality is shrinking.”

In Vilhelmina, officials recently proposed closing a local school in order to account for budget gaps after the Migration Board reduced assistance to the city in the amount of roughly $4.2 million, prompting the outrage of parents.

Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven has claimed that there is no link between the high number of migrants the country has taken in recent years and the rising problem of gang violence.

The Swedish prime minister made his comments on Sunday on Swedish television, stating that the problem with rising gang violence was very real and different from the past and that the government “may not have seen it coming”, Nyheter Idag reports.

The so-called Sandviken report published in 2014 by Sweden’s largest daily Dagens Nyheter promised the rural Swedish municipality a mind-boggling half a billion kronor in immigration-related gains. Today, the municipality is mired in debt.

Nobody in the world could’ve predicted this except me.

Sweden’s Sandviken Municipality, which according to a widely-criticised report by an acclaimed consulting company should have been turned into a land of milk and honey owing to immigration, is facing a record budget defecit of SEK 67 million (almost $7 million).

In 2014, a report prepared by PricewaterhouseCoopers on behalf of the the local authorities, promised Sandviken, a municipality of 40,000 located in Gävleborg County north of Stockholm, an astonishing annual profit of SEK 500 million (over $51 million) “due to foreign-born residents”.

Five years later, the promised mountains and marvels are still to materialise, as the municipality is cruising toward a record budget deficit that will be the fourth-largest in the entire country.

You know, if we lived in a real capitalistic society, getting it this wrong would have serious consequences for companies.

But somehow, I doubt this firm will suffer any consequences.

The chairman of the municipal council, Social Democrat Peter Kärnström, cited “unfavourable demographics” with many children and elderly. At present, the municipality needs 800 school places, while elderly care is in need of expansion as well amid ballooning costs.

So giving free money to anyone who sets foot there isn’t working out as planned?

In recent years, the so-called “Sandviken report” has been widely questioned and ridiculed in Sweden. When confronted by the news outlet Nyheter Idag, Peter Wolodarski, the editor-in-chief of Dagens Nyheter, the country’s leading daily that published the report in 2014, admitted that “it was not a good article”. However, the newspaper has refused to retract the article.

Of late, several Swedish municipalities have resisted accepting more newly arrived immigrants. Sölvesborg’s right-wing Sweden Democrat Mayor Louise Erixon recently created a stir by suggesting the “red-led” Social Democrat municipalities take over Sölvesborg’s newcomers, because they have claimed it’s “economically beneficial” and sarcastically referencing Sandviken.

The United Nations has criticised Sweden for an increase in children being detained, as statistics from the Swedish prosecutor’s office have revealed.

In Sweden, the detainment of a minor is generally only used when no other solutions are available to the authorities but despite this, there has been a rise in the number of arrests followed by detainment over the last year, Sveriges Radio reports.

Sweden has seen several high profile criminal cases involving underage suspects, including that of a 15-year-old Afghan migrant who was found guilty of attempted murder in December last year.

The Afghan teen was sentenced to a year in juvenile care to be followed by deportation after he requested to be allowed to return to his native Afghanistan.

And this being Scandinavia, where prisoners have a higher standard of living than most people on the planet (probably most Scandinavians, as well).

There are exceptions, of course, but these can be solved through the courts
