A Police and Crime Commissioner has been officially reprimanded after speaking out about transgender rapists.

Lisa Townsend, the Conservative’s police and crime commissioner for Surrey, was ruled to have not been “dignified or respectful” by Surrey’s police and crime panel when supporting J.K. Rowling’s tweet that suggested transgender rapists are not female.

Crispin Blunt, the Conservative Member of Parliament for Reigate, as well as two other male complainees reported Townsend to the male-dominated panel, who ruled on International Women’s Day that Townsend had breached the code of conduct of her office, and reprimanded her.

Townsend upon hearing the verdict said that the panel “is saying you should not speak about this [transgender rapists], but if you do, we’ll police the language”, the Daily Mail reports.

The backlash on Townsend came after she engaged with a tweet from J.K. Rowling that called out a policy from Scottish police that allowed male rapists to identify as female, even if they have a penis.

“War is Peace. Freedom is Slavery. Ignorance is Strength. The Penised Individual Who Raped You Is a Woman”, Rowling said in December 2021, in an effort to compare the Scottish police to George Orwell’s dystopian novel 1984.

Townsend responded to this by tweeting, “It’s not a ‘niche’ issue, it’s not ‘hysterical’ of women to be taking to the streets about it. We will not accept this gaslighting from men who keep telling us they are women, or from those who enable them. #IStandWithJKRowling”.

After being apparently offended by the communication Crispin Blunt MP — who is also the chairman of the all-party parliamentary group on LGBT+ rights — complained to Surrey Council that Townsend’s “messaging propagates dangerous myths”.

Speaking in response to the panel Townsend said on Tuesday she was “disappointed that on this International Women’s Day Surrey’s Police and Crime Panel have found my tweet in support of a J.K. Rowling post about women who have been raped by ‘women’ with a penis, not to be ‘dignified or respectful’ and to explain myself to the [three] men who complained”.

“These three men who complained, and a panel full of men who investigated it, have decided they must police a woman’s language about an issue of great concern to many women… That is the issue of the safety and rights of women to go to female-only spaces such as domestic abuse shelters. I will not stop speaking out about these issues”, she later told the British paper.

The panel opted to rule against Townsend despite her highlighting in January that she was merely trying to “stand up for women” with her initial tweet as well as highlighting she does “support the right of trans men and women to live how they choose”.

Yeah, all these people will come out and say “oh, I support them doing whatever they want.”

Except JK Rowling.

A care worker has avoided jail after he was caught on camera abusing an ‘exceptionally vulnerable’ autistic man.

Raja Khan, 29, was filmed on a hidden camera abusing Ollie Hopton, 20, at the Nursery Road Care Home in Sunbury-on-Thames, Surrey, in 2017.

Khan called Mr Hopton ‘a lazy, lazy a***hole’, dragging him out of bed, poking him repeatedly and, on one occasion, throwing imitation punches near him.

Khan had worked in the care industry for 10 years, but mainly with adults before being made a team leader at the care home, run by London Care Partnership which is now known as Elysium Healthcare.

Last month Khan, from Hounslow, was found guilty of ill-treatment and wilful neglect at Guildford Crown Court.

Passing sentence at the same court on Friday, Judge Rufus Taylor said Khan lacked training and that there was ‘a lack of supervision further up the chain.’

The judge said: ‘In my judgement, you just couldn’t cope with him.’

Khan was jailed for 12 months, suspended for 18 months.

He was also ordered to do 250 hours of unpaid work and 30 days of rehabilitation activity, and banned from working with children and vulnerable adults.

A man who admitted to causing the death of Surrey’s Julie Paskall — a crime described as having “terrorized a community” — has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Yosef Jomo Gopaul, 28, pleaded guilty to manslaughter during an appearance in provincial court in Surrey on Friday morning. He was initially charged with second-degree murder.

Gopaul also pleaded guilty to robbery in connection with an incident that took place almost two weeks before the attack on Paskall.

Shortly after 9 p.m. on Dec. 29, 2013, Paskall arrived at the Newton Wave Pool parking lot. She was heading to the adjacent Newton Arena to pick up her son, who was refereeing a hockey game.

Paskall got out of her van and walked toward the arena, carrying her purse under her arm. When she was about 25 metres from her vehicle, Gopaul approached her from behind and threw a rock at the back of her head. Paskall fell, landing face down on the ground.

Gopaul took Paskall’s purse and fled. He dumped her purse in a hedge about a kilometre away after taking money and lottery tickets.

About 20 minutes later, a woman leaving the arena found Paskall on the ground. The woman, a nurse, began first aid and sent her daughter to call 911. A second woman, also a nurse, stopped to help minutes later.

When undercover police and immigration officers raided a care agency suspected of employing illegal immigrants, they declared the operation an unmitigated success.

They stormed into the offices of Carefirst24 on a busy road in Sutton, Surrey, in broad daylight, arresting the owner and his wife as well as seven others and seizing as much paperwork as they could lay their hands on.

Later that day, January 15, 2013, the Metropolitan Police even put out a statement, hailing their work as a perfect example of the police and UK Border Agency working together ‘to protect elderly and vulnerable people and to keep them safe’.

At around the time the police were conducting their well-planned raid, 81-year-old Gloria Foster was alone at her neat ground-floor flat just four miles away, unaware of the devastating consequences it would have on her life.

Suffering from dementia, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes, the frail widow was watching television after eating the spaghetti bolognese that her Filipina carer, Marieta, had heated up in the microwave for her lunch. Marieta, who was Gloria’s favourite carer, carefully recorded these details in the care logbook.

She had ‘put on the washing machine’ she noted, as a reminder to the next carer, due later that day, that it would need to be emptied.

After the raid on Carefirst24, however, there was no visit. In effect, the company immediately ceased to trade and Gloria, who had been paying £2,000 a month to be visited four times a day, was left alone for nine fateful days before she was discovered by a visiting nurse.

By then Gloria was suffering from dehydration, starvation and kidney failure. She was covered in her own faeces and soaked in urine. She never fully regained consciousness and died on February 4.

This week, at an inquest into her death, a coroner declared the former secretary had died of ‘natural causes contributed to by neglect’ after it emerged that Surrey County Council, which was responsible for stepping in to take over Gloria’s care, catastrophically failed to do so.

The council failed to contact her, despite being given a list of Carefirst24’s clients in advance of the raid by the police. Their gross failure, said coroner Richard Travers, undoubtedly contributed to her death.

But the tragic story of how Gloria Foster slipped through the care net also raises pressing questions about how Britain’s middle-class elderly are treated by the local authorities responsible for their wellbeing.

Having worked and saved hard for most of their lives, many of them are expected to pay for their own care.

Gloria certainly was, footing an enormous bill to ensure she was safe in her own home.

Carers would drive to her small ground-floor flat in Banstead, Surrey, four times a day. They would get her out of bed, wash her and give her meals. They would ensure she took her medication. They washed and dried her clothes and did the housework.

They would help her move between her bed and armchair. Then bathe her and put her to bed.

Gloria was incapable of looking after herself, but perhaps most disturbing of all was the admission this week by the social worker responsible for contacting Gloria after the raid on Carefirst24 that there was an ‘assumption’ that self-funding clients could ‘manage their own care or have help from someone else to arrange it’.

Elizabeth Egan, who gave evidence at this week’s inquest in Woking, has since left her job, along with her immediate manager Jane Giles, who failed to check Ms Egan’s work.

Surrey County Council has since apologised for its failure, but a detailed examination of the events leading up to Gloria’s death reveals the extent to which those in the care system are at the mercy of bureaucracy. Her friends, who are still reeling from her death, are also determined to understand what went so catastrophically wrong with her care.

A leading consultant is to appear in court accused of using hidden equipment to spy on patients at a private hospital.

Hearing specialist Dr Lam Hoe Yeoh is alleged to have secretly recorded intimate images of female patients, colleagues and visitors.

The 61-year-old world-renowned expert was arrested at St Anthony’s Hospital in North Cheam, Surrey, after one potential victim raised the alarm.

Detectives were shocked to discover evidence that Yeoh may have used sophisticated equipment to amass a potentially huge collection of material.

They are now trying to identify more than 70 women and have appealed for anyone who suspects they may have been covertly filmed to come forward.

Yeoh, a father of three, is also accused of making indecent images of children and possessing extreme pornography.

Last night the hospital said the doctor has been suspended from his duties as the Scotland Yard investigation continued.

The arrest has shocked staff and patients at the historic hospital, which was recently bought by a private healthcare group.

It was previously owned by Roman Catholic nuns, the Daughters of the Cross of Liege, who founded it in 1904.

The investigation into Yeoh began in April. Police were so concerned they arrested him at his workplace and seized computer equipment.

Yeoh was originally charged with one count of voyeurism but 29 further counts were brought against him as the inquiry widened.

It is understood that some images are alleged to have been recorded in a toilet at the hospital, with others taken at unidentified locations.

Yeoh, who is also known by the first name Robin, lives with his wife Ivy, 57, at a £750,000 home in Banstead, Surrey.

His two daughters attended Cambridge University. He is a renowned expert in tinnitus, vertigo and dizziness, and has spent more than 20 years treating both children and adults.

Yeoh has been an outspoken critic of earphones and MP3 players, claiming they are damaging the hearing of an entire generation of young people.

A MAN was hospitalised after a racially aggravated assault in Redhill.

The apparently unprovoked attack took place close to the bus station at around 7.30pm on June 27, when a white man in his 40s was reportedly approached by a group of four black men who assaulted him, leaving him needing hospital treatment.

Detectives are appealing for any witnesses to the attack to come forward.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Colin Snell, said: “This offence occurred in a very busy part of town and from the witnesses we have already spoken to we know there were more people in the area at the time of the assault and I urge these people to contact police.”

Four men have been arrested and released on bail until August 19.

A killer who bludgeoned a betting shop manager to death for less than £300 just yards away from a police safer neighbourhood team office is facing a life sentence.

Shafique Aarij, 21, battered married father-of-three Andrew Iacovou repeatedly with a claw hammer at a branch of Ladbrokes in Morden, Surrey, before leaving him to die.

Aarij, a regular gambler at the shop, deliberately targeted the bookies when he knew only one member of staff was present.

He grabbed £296.68 from a till tray before ‘calmly’ walking out of the store, splattered in his victim’s blood, and catching a bus.

Mr Iacovou, 55, desperately hit the panic button but local police were not even alerted as the call only went to Ladbrokes’ head office.

Cameras also failed to capture the incident as he was knocked straight to the floor during the attack, Southwark Crown Court heard.

For 90 minutes he lay helpless on the other side of the counter while punters came in to play on the fruit machines, unaware the manager was even there.

Mr Iacovou’s lifeless body was eventually discovered by a shocked customer, who called the emergency services.

A post-mortem found he suffered haemorrhages and brain injuries after the brutal killing at the Aberconway Road branch, where he worked for 20 years, at around 8.30am on May 25 this year.

Mr Iacovou was pronounced dead at the scene at 10.28am, next to the hammer which claimed his life.
