Husna Ibrahim Arbab had already lost her son in the early days of Sudan’s civil war – burned to death in his tent after it was set on fire – when she was apprehended by militia aligned with the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group while fleeing west towards the border with Chad.

A bullet flew by close to her head, the 24-year-old said. Five male relatives were separated from the group she was travelling with, taken to a creek, and shot in the chest.

“If you are black, you are finished,” is how Arbab described her experience of the ethnically targeted violence that has swept through Darfur for the second time this century.

Accounts of massacres perpetrated by the RSF and allied Arab militias emerged shortly after war broke out in April 2023 between the RSF and the regular army, the Sudanese Armed Forces, and its allied groups. Much of what the outside world has learned about the atrocities has been relayed by survivors from refugee camps in Adré, across the border in Chad.

Speaking in Adré, Arbab said that sometimes members of her Bargo ethnic group were spared violence, and sometimes they weren’t. “The militia tested us [darker skinned people] on our language,” she said. “If you could speak Bargo then sometimes you were let go. If you couldn’t, you were killed.”

The US said on Tuesday it had determined that genocide was being perpetrated by the RSF and its allies and that it was imposing sanctions on the RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo – known as Hemedti.

The RSF and the SAF have been accused of committing war crimes during the war, which has claimed tens of thousands of lives. The US secretary of state, Antony Blinken, said in a statement that “both belligerents bear responsibility for the violence and suffering in Sudan and lack the legitimacy to govern a future peaceful Sudan”. However, Blinken said the RSF and its allies were responsible for a pattern of systematic ethnic violence in which civilians were killed as they tried to flee fighting and access to essential supplies was blocked.

In 2004, the US had declared that the RSF’s forerunner – the notorious Janjaweed militias – had committed genocide in Darfur in the early 2000s. Then, as now, the violence was directed against darker-skinned, non-Arab groups.

Some of the most serious allegations relating to the RSF have once again focused on Darfur, where up to 15,000 people died in well-documented attacks on the city of Geneina in 2023 that targeted the non-Arab Masalit and other ethnic groups.

Naima Mugadam, another member of the Bargo group, told the Guardian in Adré that two of her brothers had been killed because of their ethnicity in Geneina. The men who killed her brothers also beat her up, she said, leaving her unable to move for three days. “Telling them that I was not a Masalit did not protect me from being attacked,” she said. “I was beaten and humiliated, and lucky not to be raped.”

Tens of thousands of people have been killed and more than 8 million internally displaced since the war began, making Sudan the scene of the world’s largest internal displacement crisis. The UN says more than 30 million people – over half of them children – are in need of aid.

In a case that involved at least 27 victims, a 35-year-old Sudanese man has been convicted for multiple arson attacks across the French city of Pau, which were set over the period of at least two months, between March and May 2022. During one of the attacks, a young female student was forced to jump from her window, 7 meters (22 feet) off the ground, resulting in her breaking both her ankles and leaving her confined to using a cane, even as of today.

The man has now been convicted for his serial arson attacks, but the judge in the case refuses to deport him, saying that being sent back to Sudan would represent too grave a threat to his life.

Wave of arson attacksThe first incident occurred on the night of March 18, 2022, when he set a building on fire at Rue Darrichon and Passage des Alliés along with two vehicles nearby, according to French news outlet La Republique des Pyrenees.

On the night of May 3, he lit an entire building on fire at Rue Henri-Faisans, which was engulfed in flames. Dozens of students were trapped inside but only one was seriously injured. The fire had started in an Indian restaurant on the first floor but soon spread to the rest of the building.

On May 12, the Sudanese man set seven vehicles on fire in the Zaragoza district, and then on the same night, he broke into the Saint-Pierre Church and set fire to the presbytery.

In total, he set fire to eight vehicles over the course of the attacks.

‘The fear of dying stuck in her apartment’Numerous victims testified in the case, with many of them relating how the man had destroyed their lives, both financially and psychologically.

One of the victims, Laurence, was so seriously injured in the fire on Rue Faisans that she said during the trial that it was a “miracle” she could even attend. Her lawyer, Me Marrien, said Laurence experienced “the fear of dying stuck in her apartment,” as flames quickly spread inside. The lawyer then asked: “How could he have seen what he did and do it again?”

Laurence, who was a student attending university when the Sudanese arsonist set her building on fire, was forced to jump from her apartment window. The jump, which broke both her ankles, has left her still using a cane, and doctors say it is unclear whether she will regain her full ability to walk during her lifetime. The building the man attacked was a dormitory packed full of French students.

The judge in the case sentenced the Sudanese man to 10 years in prison, short of the 12 years requested by the prosecution.

Laurence said “It’s a fair sentence” even if she had preferred the 12 years requested by deputy prosecutor Sébastien Baraldi. However, despite the arson attack that nearly cost the victim her life and left her disabled, she said she did not want the arsonist permanently banned from French soil.

The world would’ve been a better place if this bitch had been burned alive.

Ukrainian special forces are reportedly operating in Sudan in support of the country’s army against Russian Wagner mercenaries aligned with the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF), according to a video released on Monday.

The Kyiv Post released a short film which it said came from sources within Ukrainian military intelligence, responsible for covert operations, showing a captured Russian prisoner being interrogated alongside two African men.

The Russian soldier says he is from “PMC Wagner” and came into Sudan from Central African Republic, where fighters from the Russian group are based, “to overthrow the local government” with a force of about 100.

The location and content of the video have not been independently verified.

However, it has surfaced following months of speculation that Ukrainian forces are operating in Sudan as part of an emerging campaign by Kyiv to strike at Russian interests far beyond the Ukraine war’s frontlines.

The Ukraine thought they could beat Russia inside of Russia. That didn’t work out so well.

A Sudanese illegal migrant has been sentenced to twenty years in prison after being found guilty of murdering his former girlfriend, a pro-migrant activist, in 2019.

Rifat Abbas, a 34-year old Sudanese illegal migrant was found guilty in a court in the Parisian suburb of Seine-Saint-Denis on Friday, receiving a prison sentence of twenty years. The migrant was accused of stabbing his former girlfriend, 27-year-old Audrey Coignard, to death in her apartment on September 16th of 2019.

The lawyer for Abbas told the court that her client should receive a merciful sentence in light of his tough migratory journey through Libya where he was allegedly tortured, Le Figaro reported.

On Thursday, the Sudanese national admitted that he had “stabbed” his former victim in order to “silence her”.

“I was afraid that the neighbours would hear and the police would come,” he said.

And nothing of value was lost

Friends of the victim spoke out about Coignard, saying she was “an activist and passionate medical student, Audrey was always ready to support her family, friends and the people she met on her way,” French newspaper L’Orne Combattante reports.

Coignard was found dead in September of 2019 and her then-32-year-old former Sudanese illegal migrant boyfriend was arrested and indicted for her murder by the prosecutor’s office of Bobigny in October of that year.

Investigators say that the body of the 27-year-old was found in her apartment at around 4 pm on September 16th and that her body showed wounds consistent with those inflicted by a knife. According to a report from the newspaper Le Parisien, Coignard had been stabbed at least fourteen times.

Coignard had worked as a medical intern at a local hospital and had also volunteered with a local pro-migrant group that fought against the expulsions of illegals from France.

Sweden Democratic regional politician Bertil Malmberg was convicted on October 7 in Nyköping District Court for incitement against ethnic groups. Malmberg said at a meeting of the council that South Sudanese have a low average IQ, citing UN figures.

It was at the end of April that Bertil Malmberg at a meeting of Sörmland’s regional council pointed out the research about the average level of intelligence of South Sudanese after the Swedish Migration Agency, in its lack of wisdom, placed a number of South Sudanese quota refugees in Sörmland. When Swedish weekly Nya Tider interviewed Bertil Malmberg in connection with the verdict, he said that he only tried to explain how difficult it has been for these people to integrate in Sweden, and that it would therefore be wiser to help them in their own country.

“There are lots of those who are now brought here as quota refugees, and I do not think that is good. Not only for society but also for the poor people of South Sudan. I have the greatest sympathy for them, they have for decades been employed by the northern part of Sudan which they broke away from in 2011. They have one of the world’s lowest levels of education and widespread illiteracy, the majority have worked as farmers and herders for generations. Placing them in northern Europe is not very wise as I see it,” Malmberg explained.

Malmberg said that he was interrupted and was not allowed to finish his testimony during the trial. “I had intended to refer to the HDI [development index] from the UN and make it clear that it was about these people becoming impossible to integrate into the labor market, but I never got that far.”

The verdict stated that Malmberg wanted  to portray the designated ethnic group to “be less valuable than other ethnic groups”. But he pointed out that he had “not spoken at all about any human value – I talked about employability”.

This guy is 81 years old.

Imagine how confusing this all must be for someone of that age.

Of course, people of that age allowed women’s liberation to happen, so really, they deserve much worse than suspended sentences.

Unidentified attackers killed two aid workers who were returning from a refugee camp in an western Ethiopia region that shares a border with South Sudan, their aid group and a U.N. organization said.

The attack happened on Thursday in Gambella region, which shares a porous frontier with South Sudan, when the staff of U.S.-based Action Against Hunger were returning from a child nutrition center at Nguenyyiel Refugee Camp.

“Team members were in transit from our 24-hour paediatric Nutrition Stabilisation Center in Nguenyyiel Refugee Camp when they were ambushed by armed individuals,” Action Against Hunger said in a statement on Thursday.

“Two employees were killed at the scene. Action Against Hunger has suspended full operations in Gambella, but are maintaining the provision of life-saving assistance.”

Nguenyyiel camp hosts just over 74,000 refugees from South Sudan, according to data from the U.N. refugee agency UNHCR.

“I am confident that Ethiopian authorities will arrest and prosecute those responsible for the attack,” Steven Were, U.N. Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Ethiopia, said in a statement on Thursday.

There was no immediate comment from Ethiopia authorities on the incident.

After almost nine months of violence and wrangling, Sudan came a step closer to a civilian government on Saturday when opposition leaders and military generals signed a power-sharing agreement in the capital, Khartoum.

The choice of a fearsome commander on the signing table, and the absence of women who played a crucial role in the protest movement, show that obstacles still remain in Sudan’s path to full democracy.

The agreement follows protests that toppled 75-year-old dictator Omar al-Bashir, ending his 30-year rule over the northeastern African country.

Under Bashir’s iron grip, an entire generation grew up in the shadow of war, where the threat of torture in infamous “ghost houses” was never far away, and press freedom nonexistent.

Following his ouster, the Transitional Military Council (TMC) moved in, announcing a three year transitional period.

But protesters continued their call for civilian rule, and on Saturday thousands of people flooded to the capital to celebrate the historic signing.

The choice of signatories in the power-sharing agreement was heavy with symbolism.

The opposition — the Sudanese Professional (SPA) — put forward Ahmed Al-Rabee, a schoolteacher earning the equivalent of around $33 a month and emblematic of the economic hardship faced by professionals amid Sudan’s institutional corruption.

The TMC, meanwhile, put forward the head of its paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo — known simply as Hemedti.

The feared commander, who was Bashir’s former right hand man in the bloody Darfur conflict, has overseen numerous crackdowns on protesters — including on June 3 when more than 100 people were killed outside the capital’s military headquarters.

When Hemedti walked out the signing, he was surrounded by protesters chanting: “Blood for blood. We will not accept blood money,” CNN heard from eyewitnesses.

Hemedti has also supplied Sudanese forces to the Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen. And the presence of the Saudi Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Adel al-Jubeir, at the signing signals the Gulf state will be backing Hemedti in his home country.

Indeed, Saudi Arabia, along with the United Arab Emirates, were among the first nations to acknowledge the TMC’s rule, making billion-dollar donations to shore up the military even as protests continued.

I hope they institute full democracy.

The United Nations condemned on Sunday a wave of “brutal” sexual attacks on women and girls in the northern town of Bentiu in South Sudan which took place in what it described as a government controlled area of the region.

On Friday, the aid agency Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) said that unknown gunmen have raped 125 women during a 10-day spree of violence in Bentiu, but local officials disputed the report.

The U.N. mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) said approximately 125 women and girls have sought medical treatment after having been raped or sexually assaulted as they walked along roads near Nhialdu and Guit on their way to Bentiu and that victims reported the attacks as having been carried out by young men in civilian clothing or military uniforms. They were also beaten and robbed, it said.

Since the conflict started in December 2013, civilians in the area suffered through two previous offensives as well as the world’s only famine in recent years.

Amnesty International visited Unity State in early 2016 and documented violations during a previous military offensive on southern areas of the state, including Leer county.

Following that visit, the organization identified four individuals suspected of responsibility for war crimes and crimes against humanity and called on South Sudan’s military chief-of-staff to investigate them. There was no response. Recent UN reports have suggested that some of these individuals may also have been involved in the atrocities committed during the 2018 offensive.

In August 2015, after more than 20 months of intermittent negotiations, South Sudan’s warring parties finally agreed to the terms of a peace agreement—the Agreement on the Resolution of the Crisis in South Sudan (ARCSS). Despite this agreement, fighting continued in several parts of the country, and along with it a number of violations of international humanitarian law including murder and/or directing an attack against the civilian population or an individual civilian, sexual violence, slavery and sexual slavery, and destruction of civilian property, including food and other items needed for survival. This report describes events in Leer county, Unity state, between August and December 2015, where government forces violated their obligations under international humanitarian and human rights law.

Enough is enough.

The only way to break this vicious cycle is to end the impunity enjoyed by South Sudanese fighters on all sides. The government must ensure that civilians are protected that those responsible for such heinous crimes are held to account.

Amnesty International is urging South Sudan’s government to end all the abuses and to establish the Hybrid Court, which has been in limbo since 2015. The government must immediately sign the Memorandum of Understanding on the Hybrid Court, adopt the statute and ensure that the court becomes rapidly operational.
