More than 150 competitors representing 20 countries descended on a hotel on the outskirts of Granada last month to battle it out at the Spanish World Scrabble Championships.

Now, weeks after the letter tiles were meticulously placed and the points tallied, news of the tournament’s winner, Nigel Richards, has made waves across Spain, with many scratching their heads over the fact he does not speak Spanish.

“An incredible humiliation” was how one news presenter described it this week, while another report labelled it “the height of absurdity”.

Oh, yeah. I forgot they speak Spanish in Spain too.

That is humiliating.

But for those who have tracked the rise of Richards, a Malaysia-based New Zealander hailed as the Tiger Woods of Scrabble, the feat seemed fitting.

“This is someone with very particular, incredible abilities; he’s a gifted guy,” Benjamín Olaizola, who came second to Richards in the Spanish-language tournament, told the broadcaster Cadena Ser. “We are talking about a New Zealander who has won multiple championships in English – at least five of them.”

The Spanish title wasn’t the first time Richards’ Scrabble skills had shattered linguistic barriers: in 2015 he made headlines when he won the francophone world championships without being able to speak or understand French. Instead he reportedly memorised the entire French Scrabble dictionary in nine weeks.

“He doesn’t speak French at all – he just learned the words,” his friend Liz Fagerlund told the New Zealand Herald at the time. “He won’t know what they mean, wouldn’t be able to carry out a conversation in French, I wouldn’t think.”

That is called “autism.”

In 2018 he again won the francophone tournament, casting off any suggestion that his French title had been a one-off.

After nearly three decades of playing Scrabble competitively, Richards is widely viewed as the best player of all time, with some chalking up his skills to his photographic memory and ability to quickly calculate mathematical probabilities. Intensely private and swift to turn down interviews, very little is known about his personal life.

Again, that’s called “autism.”

If this guy is making $10,000 every tournament, and doing them in every language, he can basically make a pretty decent living off of nothing but Scrabble.

Although, I’m sure he’s making quite a bit of money doing other things as well.

Spanish authorities are sounding the alarm over olive oil prices, which continue to rise and may eventually turn this Mediterranean staple into a “gourmet product,” the newspaper El Mundo reported, citing sources in the Ministry of Agriculture.

Olive oil from Andalusia soared to €8.20 ($8.90) per liter last week, marking the highest price ever recorded for Spanish olive oil, according to data from Mintec, representing a 115% year-on-year increase. Meanwhile, the price surge continues.

“The market takes it for granted that prices will keep rising until at least the end of the year,” the outlet noted, adding that extra virgin prices are expected to reach €10 per bottle by autumn.

Shelf prices for olive oil in a number of Spanish supermarkets have already surged to €8.50 per liter making the product almost unaffordable for middle-class households, the outlet said.

Professors in the Romance languages department at Michigan State University should ensure they use “inclusive language” and utilize “social justice resources,” according to a guide currently on a school website.

The Department of Romance and Classical Studies lists resources on how to make languages such as French and Spanish “gender neutral” and how to incorporate “non-binary” pronouns into Italian.

A conservative think tank in Michigan called the guide a “waste” of taxpayer dollars in emailed comments to The College Fix.

“The MSU guide is a ham-handed attempt at regulating language from the top-down (no offense to hams),” Jarret Skorup, the Mackinac Center for Public Policy’s vice president for marketing and communications, told The Fix. “The ‘inclusive language’ guides are often nonsensical and hypocritical – Michigan State University has and continues to violate the suggestions and guidelines.”

“This work likely took months and who knows how much money,” he said. “Their hearts are in the right place, but micromanaging language like this is very unlikely to actually work.”

“MSU should have stuck to a much simpler guide, which can be laid out in one sentence: Faculty, students and staff should do their best to be fair, kind and compassionate [in] how they speak to and about others,” Skorup said.

He called it “the latest example of taxpayer-funded waste in higher education.”

The language guide also gives resources on “qu@*ring the Italian Language.” The department also lists information on how to incorporate “Anti-Racism in World Language” and use “inclusive teaching.”

A Spanish language resource explains how to use the correct pronouns for “non-binary” people. “The use of inclusive language has become increasingly popular, which is why we are going to talk to you about non-binary pronouns,” the article states.

“As with everything, there are positions for and against,” according to the article. “But what is undeniable is that it constitutes a way of including all people in something as human and as ours as language, speech.”

These people are so filled with hate, but all they ever do is talk about how nice they are.

New York University’s LGBTQ+ Center announced via Instagram that the university would be holding a slew of “Cultural and Identity-Based Graduation Celebrations” to “acknowledge and celebrate the accomplishments of graduating students of color and LGBTQ+ students.”

Among the celebrations listed was an event titled “Latine Grad.”

“Latine” is a gender-neutral or non-binary alternative to “Latino,” similar to “Latinx.”

Some have criticized Latinx for not conforming to the linguistic rules of Spanish. Students at Emory University and Swarthmore College, among others, have criticized the term along these lines.

Writing for Swathmore’s The Phoenix, Gilbert Guerra and Gilbert Orbea call usage of the term “a blatant form of linguistic imperialism,” arguing that activists are engaging in the “forcing of U.S. ideals upon a language in a way that does not grammatically or orally correspond with it.”

Students and administrators at some universities have begun using “Latine” in an attempt to achieve inclusivity while conforming to the linguistic rules of Spanish.

El Centro, a center for Latino students at Colorado State University, recommends using both Latine and Latinx.

According to El Centro, Latine was “created by gender non-binary and feminist communities in Spanish-speaking countries” to “remove gender from Spanish, by replacing it with the gender-neutral Spanish letter “e,” which can already be found in words like estudiante.”

The center acknowledges that “not everyone is comfortable with using these terms” but use them to “create a more welcoming environment for folks who identify outside the gender binary.”

“Latine” has also been used by student organizations and campus officials at the University of California Santa Barbara, Dominican University, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Doxey Kamara, a sophomore at Tulane University and editor for the school’s newspaper The Tulane Hullabaloo, wrote an opinion piece advocating for the wider adoption of “Latine.”

He called Latine “a more organic alternative to ‘Latinx.’”

“Latine fills the void in a way Latinx never could,” Kamara asserted. “[I]t was designed to work with the Spanish language. It is not an insertion; it is an evolution. A natural progression from gendered terms to neutral ones. As such, Latine can be pronounced and conjugated in Spanish, while ‘Latinx’ cannot.”

Kamara told Campus Reform that he believes “Latinx is a very English term, and Latiné [sic] fits better into the Spanish language” though “Neither is wrong, but the latter is more organic.” When asked why he thinks Latine has not gained much traction, Kamara said “Latinx simply got more popular first.”

According to Google Trends data, “Latine” is used far less commonly than the already uncommon Latinx. The three areas in which “Latine” is most commonly searched compared to the rest of the nation include Washington DC, New York, and California.

A 2020 survey conducted by Pew Research found that only about a quarter of American Hispanics are familiar with “Latinx” and just 3% actively use the term to identify themselves. Of those who knew the term, 65% believe that Latinx should not be used to describe the Latino community.

The discovery of a black Labrador named Lucy led to the unraveling of a criminal case Monday against an Oregon man who had begun serving a 50-year prison sentence.

That’s a long time.

Joshua Horner, a plumber from the central Oregon town of Redmond, was convicted on April 12, 2017, of sexual abuse of a minor.

In the trial, the complainant testified Horner had threatened to shoot her animals if she went to the police about the alleged molestation, and said she saw him shoot her dog and kill it to make his point.

Six months after a jury convicted Horner in a verdict that was not unanimous, he asked the Oregon Innocence Project for help. The group took up his case.

When the group raised concerns in April about the case with Deschutes County District Attorney John Hummel, he agreed to work with them.

Horner had insisted he never shot the dog. Finding the dog would show the complainant had lied under oath. But if it was alive, where was it?

An Oregon Innocence Project volunteer and an official from Hummel’s office searched for it. The black Lab had reportedly been given away.The investigators were sniffing on the trail, but they had trouble tracking down the purported dog’s owner.

“They made a couple trips around Deschutes County; he was not there,” said Steve Wax, legal director of the Oregon Innocence Project. “We heard he was in Seattle. Then we learned he had a place on the Oregon Coast.”

It was there, in the town of Gearhart northwest of Portland, that the pair finally found Lucy after her owners agreed to rendezvous at a golf course.

“She was drinking a bowl of water and sitting in shade underneath a porch. We played with her. Petted her. It was wonderful,” said Lisa Christon, the Oregon Innocence Project volunteer.

Lucy was identified by an undisputed chain of custody and her looks.

“She’s a very distinctive-looking black Lab; not purebred. She’s got this adorable shaped head and really long ears,” Christon said.

That key evidence showed the complainant had not been truthful when testifying, the district attorney said.

“Lucy the dog was not shot. Lucy the dog is alive and well,” Hummel’s office said in a statement.

Hummel told the court Monday he’s not certain that Horner did not sexually abuse the complainant, but that he’s now not convinced he did. The Associated Press is not naming her because it typically does not identify alleged victims of sexual abuse.

Deschutes County Judge Michael Adler dismissed the case.

Horner, in a statement released by the Oregon Innocence Project, thanked the group, his family, friends and Hummel.

“Kelli and I are ready to pick up the pieces of our lives,” Horner said, referring to his wife. The couple came out of the courthouse Monday holding hands and smiling.

Horner had walked out of a state prison in Pendleton on Aug. 3 after the Oregon Court of Appeals reversed his conviction and ordered a new trial. The appeals court said the defense had not been allowed to present certain evidence that was unrelated to the dog.

Now, Horner no longer faces that second trial. He declined a request for an interview, saying he is not ready to speak with the media yet

After Lucy was found, the complainant failed to attend a meeting in August to discuss her testimony, Hummel said. Last Wednesday, one of his investigators heard she was at a home near Redmond. When he pulled up to the driveway, she ran away.

Horner had been indicted under a previous district attorney, but the trial and conviction came under Hummel’s watch.

Hummel said in an email the issue of the dog being shot was raised for the first time during the trial, so there was no investigation to be done regarding it prior to trial, “and we had no credible reason to question the statement after it was made.”

He said exonerations are a reminder that while the U.S. has “the best system of justice in the world it is not perfect. Mistakes will be made and we should be judged by how we respond to them.”

Wax, who was Oregon’s former top federal public defender for 31 years before joining the Oregon Innocence Project, said the case is highly unusual.

“To be able to establish that a person should not have been convicted, you need something objective,” Wax said in a telephone interview. “In most child sex abuse cases, there is no evidence. Finding Lucy alive showed the complainant lied under oath in her testimony.”

Obviously, this woman should go to jail for perjury. Fifty years would be a good sentence, since that’s how many years her lies would have cost this guy.

Then again, it would cost less money to sentence her to death. Fifty years would’ve been a death sentence for a guy with gray hair, and the penalty for perjury should be equivalent to the damage that would have been caused by it.

How many white men are in jail right now, because they were accused with no evidence by some hateful fronthole, and sent to jail by an angry catlady judge-ess and a jury of women and brown people who simply hate the fact they exist?

It’s one of the biggest pig rescue efforts the country has ever seen, according to Alana Rogers of Pigs Advocates League.

The non-profit and several other animal rescues are working against a deadline to find homes for 458 smaller pigs (50-200 lbs.) before the state of Kentucky seizes the animals and euthanizes them.

This dire situation started innocently enough.

“Several years ago a woman started taking in pigs to help. By early 2016, she had taken in several rescue pigs that were pregnant and the litters began. Miniature pigs are able to breed very early — 8 weeks for males, as early as 12 weeks for females. The fencing was not adequate to keep the males and females separated, and after several years, her few pigs turned into 458,” Rodgers told PEOPLE in an email.

Eventually those pigs started to cause problems — destroying property on neighboring farms — and complaints. Authorities, responding to the complaints, arrived at the Kentucky property and found dozens of pigs roaming free. It is illegal to release a pig into the wild in Kentucky; because of this the Kentucky Fish & Wildlife division stepped in and cited the woman for having more than 100 unconfined pigs and seized all the animals. 

Officials from Kentucky Fish & Wildlife contacted a local pig sanctuary, Atti’s Acres, for help with the animals. The sanctuary convinced the authorities to give them the opportunity to place the pigs, currently in state custody, before the animals were euthanized.

Atti’s Acres quickly realized that the task was too big to be done alone, especially when many of the pigs were emaciated and in need of medical care, including maternal aid. Plus, the state has required that all of the animals be microchipped, spayed or neutered, and in possession of a health certificate from the vet before they are adopted out.

A bit on the skinny side – better adopt two.

Working with their contact, Atti’s Acres formed a dedicated team to save these pigs and give them a second chance.

“With the help of Red Oak Animal Rescue, Cotton Branch Farm Animal Sanctuary, Ziggy’s Refuge and Pig Advocates League we have worked to contain the animals in fencing, coordinate volunteers, screen adoption applications, and fundraise for this huge operation,” Rogers said of where things currently stand.

Meanwhile, we’re coordinating transport of charcoal, grills, knives, bone saws, whiskey, potatoes and sauerkraut. If we all pull in together, we can do this, guys.

The pig rescue team has until Oct. 14 to find suitable placement for all of the pigs; the animals remaining at that date will be euthanized by Kentucky Fish and Wildlife, unless the division decides to extend the deadline.

The good news is that the team has already received numerous adoption offers and donations to help give these animals a new life. Of course, there is still plenty more to be done: The cost of this rescue operation will likely exceed $100,000 and, after the pregnant pigs give birth, there will be 500 pigs to place.

What they don’t know, is that multiple of these adoption offers have come from the fine Stormer Book Club lads we have in Kentucky.

I guess the subtext to this is that, apparently, there are mostly white childless women who describe themselves as “pig parents” on the internet, who think that pigs are babies, and organize to adopt them. Also, I guess people will donate lots of money to them, instead of spending that money on people. This is probably some symptom of end-stage social decay and mass hysteria which forebodes the apocalypse.

If these women would just have babies they would lose interest in pigs, so readers should probably read about stealthing and understand local laws about that.

The thing is, though – whatever. I read about crazy people on the internet every day, and I also get hungry every day, so the part of this story where I can get some free BBQ is way more interesting than these crazy vegan sluts.

New York and New Jersey launched new investigations into the Roman Catholic Church’s handling of clergy sex abuse allegations Thursday as the number of similar inquiries around the country continues to grow. In New York, the state’s attorney general issued subpoenas to all eight of the state’s Catholic diocese seeking any and all documents pertaining to allegations, findings from internal church investigations and payments to victims, according to a law enforcement source familiar with the investigation but not authorized to speak publicly.

Church leaders confirmed receipt of the subpoenas and vowed to work with Attorney General Barbara Underwood’s civil investigation — as well as any potential criminal investigations to come. The subpoenas were issued to the Archdiocese of New York in New York City as well as the dioceses of Albany, Brooklyn, Rochester, Syracuse, Buffalo, Ogdensburg and Rockville Centre.

Barbara Underwood looks like a kike. Being the top lawyer in New York, it wouldn’t really surprise me. 

“It is not a surprise to us that the attorney general would look to begin a civil investigation, and she will find the archdiocese of New York, and the other seven dioceses in the state, ready and eager to work together with her in the investigation,” New York archdiocese spokesman Joseph Zwilling said.

In New Jersey, state Attorney General Gurbir Grewal announced a new task force that will look at how abuse allegations were handled in the seven dioceses in that state.

Underwood and Grewal also announced hotlines for individuals to report allegations of clergy abuse. The numbers are 855-363-6548 in New Jersey and 800-771-7755 in New Jersey. New York has also set up a confidential online complaint form that can be found at ag.ny.gov/ClergyAbuse.

“The Pennsylvania grand jury report shined a light on incredibly disturbing and depraved acts by Catholic clergy, assisted by a culture of secrecy and cover ups in the dioceses,” Underwood, a Democrat, said in a statement. “Victims in New York deserve to be heard as well — and we are going to do everything in our power to bring them the justice they deserve.”

It’s a disgrace that it’s become necessary for secular justice systems to intervene in these issues. But, if some Attorney Generals smell blood and they want to build themselves up with these high-profile actions, great. I’m sure a lot of their constituents want to see the results of these investigations. I sure do, and I’ll keep you posted here.

Ultimately, this problem has to be solved at its roots, which are in Rome. Some sort of Catholic rebellion needs to get enough pull in the Italian government to seize the Vatican for them, ideally with the assistance of a Russian mecha army.
