Lebanon does not appear to have the capacity to do very much in terms of targeting the Jews with missiles. More children have been reported killed in the war raging in Gaza than in four years of conflict around the world, the head of the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees said on March 12.

“Staggering. The number of children reported killed in just over 4 months in #Gaza is higher than the number of children killed in 4 years of wars around the world combined,” Mr Philippe Lazzarini said on X, formerly Twitter.

His post referenced UN numbers showing that 12,193 children were killed in conflicts worldwide between 2019 and 2022.

It compared that with reports from the Health Ministry in Hamas-run Gaza indicating that more than 12,300 children died in the Palestinian territory between last October and the end of February.

“This war is a war on children. It is a war on their childhood and their future,” Mr Lazzarini said.

More than 30,000 Palestinians have now been killed in Gaza since 7 October, the Hamas-run health ministry says.

That number equates to about 1.3% of the 2.3 million population of the territory – the latest grim marker of the awful toll of this war.

The ministry says that the majority of those killed were women and children.

Its figures do not differentiate between civilians and fighters when identifying those killed.

In its daily update on Thursday, the ministry said 81 people had been killed in the last 24 hours, bringing the total to 30,035.

The actual number of dead is likely to be far higher as the count does not include those who have not reached hospitals, among them thousands of people still lost under the rubble of buildings hit by Israeli air strikes.

More than 70,000 injured people have been registered by the Gaza ministry of health (MoH), which is the only official source for casualties. Its data is quoted by UN agencies and other international institutions.

The World Health Organization (WHO) says it has a “long-standing co-operation” with the Gaza body and that it has “good capacity in data collection/analysis”. Its previous reporting has been considered credible and “well developed” by the UN agency.

The WHO notes that when the current breakdown of deaths is compared with previous data recorded by the UN from past conflicts in Gaza, “it clearly shows an increasing number of civilians being killed, with a higher proportion of children and women fatalities”.

Asked about its assessment on the number of fatalities and the breakdown of civilians and fighters, Israel’s military told the BBC only that “the number of terrorists killed stands at approximately 10,000”.

A South Carolina man charged with killing a couple and their 13-year-old son last year now faces two more murder charges from a 2016 home invasion, according to media reports.

Kenneth Mar’keith Chisolm is charged with two counts of murder in the deaths of Lewis Kevin Ramsey and Julie Michelle Poston, who were shot and killed at their Walterboro home in October 2016, according to a release from the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office. He also faces charges of first-degree burglary and armed robbery.

Chisolm was arrested last May on three counts of murder for the deaths of 46-year-old Phillip Miller, 52-year-old Lori Miller and their 13-year-old son, Vincent, WCIV reported. A 9-year-old girl also was shot but survived, the station reported.

The United Nations on Monday named experts to an international commission of inquiry into possible human rights violations and war crimes committed by both sides during Israel’s military offensive in the Gaza Strip.

Israel, however, dismissed the inquiry as a U.N. Human Rights Council “kangaroo court”.

William Schabas, a Canadian professor of international law, will head the panel whose other members are Doudou Diene, a Senegalese veteran U.N. human rights expert.

A U.N. statement said Amal Alamuddin, a British-Lebanese lawyer engaged to be married to Hollywood actor George Clooney would take part though Alamuddin later denied she would participate in the inquiry.

“I am honored to have received the offer, but given existing commitments – including eight ongoing cases – unfortunately could not accept this role,” she said in a statement.

It was not clear who would replace Alamuddin on the panel.

The U.N. statement said the independent team will investigate “all violations of international humanitarian law and international human rights law … in the context of the military operations conducted since 13 June 2014.”

A month of war, marked by Israeli air strikes on Gaza and rockets fired by Hamas militants into Israel, has killed 1,938 Palestinians and 67 Israelis while devastating wide tracts of densely populated Gaza.

“While insinuating that Israel is committing war crimes as it protects its civilian population under attack by Hamas terrorists, the Red Cross is turning a blind eye to the deadly terrorist tactics used by Hamas—using its own population as human shields—in clearly violation of international law,” Sekulow continues. “We are urging the Red Cross to rely on the facts and the truth in reporting what is taking place in the Gaza conflict.

“Israel should be commended, not vilified, for its efforts to carry out its obligations under international law in the face of a determined, fanatical, unprincipled foe which intentionally and indiscriminately attacks Israeli civilians and uses its own civilian population as human shields.”
