Walmart’s push to crack down on shoplifting at self-checkout counters with anti-theft technology has led to a surge in “hostile” encounters between hourly workers and shoppers, according to a report.

The big-box chain — one of many retailers battling increasing theft that has eaten into their bottom lines — has armed employees with handheld devices that track purchases at self-checkout registers, an Insider report revealed.

However, the workers claim they are not properly trained to handle sticky-fingered shoppers, many of whom have hurled things at them or become aggressive when confronted for not scanning all their purchases, the outlet reported.

“It’s really uncomfortable, and it becomes, like, a safety issue,” one Walmart employee in Illinois told Insider.

Disturbing surveillance footage out of the Bay Area in California shows a serial shoplifter setting a store clerk’s hair on fire with stolen lighter fluid after he tried to stop the alleged thief from stealing.

Suraj — the store clerk who declined to reveal his last name out of fear of being targeted again — is seen on video tussling with Kendall Burton before he doused Suraj’s head in lighter fluid on Sept. 22 at the Appian Food and Liquor in El Sobrante, according to a video obtained by CBS News.

In the video, another worker is seen rushing to Suraj’s rescue with a baseball bat seconds before flames instantly consume the clerk’s head after Burton ignites the fluid in the heat of the confrontation.

Suraj suffered second and third-degree burns to his face, neck, chest, and shoulder.

Burton, 38, was arrested following his total disregard for human life, the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office told the outlet.

Known to authorities as a homeless man in the El Sobrante area, Burton faces charges including assault with a deadly weapon, battery, arson, and robbery.

He is being held without bail.

The guy is black.

One of two women who allegedly shoplifted from a California nail supply store returned to the business minutes later to demand her cellphone, which she had dropped, police say.

The store owner offered to exchange her electronic device – which Murrieta police said had the suspect’s California driver’s license and a credit card inside the case – for the stolen goods, but the suspect allegedly assaulted him prior to leaving a second time.

The incident unfolded just after noon on Sept. 19. The event was caught on Premier Nail Supply’s surveillance cameras, and footage was shared with FOX 11 Los Angeles.

The alleged assault turned the theft of about $600 in merchandise – less than the value of the suspect’s phone, according to police – into a robbery charge. The store owner suffered minor injuries after being thrown to the ground by one of the suspects.

The two suspects, who police identified to Fox News Digital as Kaydrianna Hall, 24, and Serenadi Banks, 19, left the scene in a black vehicle. They were contacted by police minutes later, when they were still sitting in the car outside their home about a mile away from the store. Police say the stolen merchandise was in plain sight inside the vehicle, and both women were taken to jail.

Hall and Banks are no longer in custody after posting bail, which was set at $5,000 each.

Shocking video captured the moment a brazen band of bandits sprinted out of a Gucci store in Los Angeles after swiping thousands of dollars worth of luxury items — as a security guard walked helplessly behind them.

Nine men wearing hoodies are seen dashing out of the swanky store at the Westfield Century City mall at about 3 p.m. Monday carrying pricey bags and suitcases as onlookers record them on their phones.

One apparent store employee wearing a suit calls 911 and makes a feeble attempt to grab one of the thieves during the chaotic incident.

And a seemingly nonchalant security guard in uniform follows the gang out the door slowly as he makes a phone call — presumably to the cops.

The security guard is a brother.

But that’s not why he didn’t do anything. He didn’t do anything because doing anything would be retarded. There is no potential for a positive outcome in doing something to stop black looters.

During their flight, some of the men dropped a few items, which those behind them picked up.

They drove off in a white SUV and a red Kia, police told the Los Angeles Times.

It was unclear how much merchandise was stolen or if any arrests have been made, according to the news outlet.

Meanwhile, the uniformed guard was widely mocked for his apparent lack of urgency.

“That security guard is so unbothered,” a Twitter user wrote.

I support the security guard.

I mean, I support looting Gucci stores in the first place, but even if I didn’t, I would still support the security guard, because what the hell is he supposed to do?

If he fights them, he can get shot. If he fights them and wins, he can get sued for white supremacy, despite the fact that he’s black.

San Francisco Examiner:

San Francisco Supervisor Dean Preston announced plans Tuesday to draft legislation that would limit the ability of security guards to use firearms while on the job.

“We must amend local law to prohibit guards from drawing weapons just to protect property,” he wrote on Twitter. “Human life is more important than property.”

Preston’s proposal follows the shooting of Banko Brown, 24, by a security guard at a Market Street Walgreens late last month.

San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins has not filed charges against Michael Earl-Wayne Anthony, who claimed he acted in self-defense during an altercation with Brown.

On Tuesday the Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to urge the D.A.’s Office to “release police reports, witness accounts and video information,” related to the shooting.

At the same meeting, Preston made the proposal to prohibit security guards from drawing their weapons to protect property.

Since an amendment made in 1981, the city’s police code allows security guards to unholster their weapons, “in lawful response to an actual and specific threat to person and/or property.”

If anything, security guards should be hired to prevent people who work at the shop from preventing theft.

A San Francisco Target store has been putting all of its products on lockdown amid a shoplifting crisis that has crippled retailers in the Golden Gate City.

Footage of the store’s interior posted to TikTok Thursday showed aisle after aisle of toiletries and cosmetics under lock and key in the megachain.

While it’s common for stores to lock up small valuable items like razors, heaps of inexpensive large items like mouthwash, shampoo and lotion were also being kept out of reach from the grubby hands of would-be shoplifters, the clip showed.

The cosmetic confinement had been underway since at least October of last year at the Folsom Street store near the city’s Mission District, according to WNCT-TV.

The Bay Area has been especially hard hit by a national organized retail crime epidemic that ballooned during the COVID-10 pandemic, leading chains such as Walgreens to close five San Francisco stores there due to theft.

The National Retail Federation’s 2022 retail security survey ranked San Francisco/Oakland as the second most hard-hit metropolitan area from theft in 2020 and 2021, only behind Los Angeles.

The organization lists items like body wash and over-the-counter medication as items that are particularly attractive to shoplifters, who can often sell their stolen wares on the black market to smaller stores.

New York City crept up to third on the list in 2021, outpacing Chicago.

Seventy-one percent of retailers surveyed by the association said they had seen a “substantial” or “moderate” increase in organized retail crime, with 55% saying that policies that reduce or eliminate cash bail for non-violent crimes in cities like San Francisco and New York are to blame.

An enormous Whole Foods in downtown San Francisco that opened just last year is temporarily closing. The company said concerns about worker safety forced it to shut down. Incidents of theft in San Francisco have gained national attention, though crime has generally fallen over the past six years.

The nearly 65,000-square foot location at Trinity Place in the city’s Mid-Market neighborhood shut its doors Monday to “ensure the safety” of its employees, a Whole Foods spokesperson said. Although Whole Foods did not share any additional information on the conditions that led to the store closing, the spokesperson added that it was a “difficult decision to close the Trinity store for the time being.” Affected employees will be transferred to nearby stores.

The store at 8th and Market streets will not open Tuesday, the spokesperson said. The store’s website has also disappeared.

Heralded as a “flagship store” following its March 2022 opening, the Whole Foods was one of the largest supermarkets in downtown San Francisco. The store sold 3,700 local products and was designed with “nods to classic San Francisco,” according to a news release.

The San Francisco Standard, an independent news website, reported that this Whole Foods location had previously reduced operating hours last year because of theft and changed its bathrooms after employees found syringes and pipes.

San Francisco Board of Supervisors member Matt Dorsey said on Twitter that he was “incredibly disappointed” by the closure.

“Our neighborhood waited a long time for this supermarket, but we’re also well aware of problems they’ve experienced with drug-related retail theft, adjacent drug markets, and the many safety issues related to them,” Dorsey wrote.

A little late for that

Property crimes in San Francisco have garnered national attention because of several attention-grabbing videos of thieves in action. Though still well below 2017 levels, the city saw a 23% increase in property crimes between 2020 and 2022, with spikes in burglary and theft headlining the surge, according to San Francisco Police Department data.

Meanwhile, violent crime statistics in San Francisco have remained relatively steady in recent years. Preliminary police data reports 12 homicides in San Francisco this year, an uptick of 20% compared to the same period in the previous year. In total, there were 56 homicides in San Francisco in 2022, which is the same number of homicides the city saw in 2021.

In recent months, national retailers have been complaining about thefts affecting locations. Chains took action by locking up everyday products such as deodorant and toothpaste and added extra security guards. However, a Walgreens executive recently admitted that the impact of the thefts may have been overblown.

The last two Walmart stores in Portland, Oregon , are closing their doors as companies across the board experience surges in retail theft .

The stores will both close on March 24. Walmart says it’s because the stores are not meeting expectations financially.

“This decision was not made lightly and was reached only after a thorough review process. We have nearly 5,000 stores across the U.S., and unfortunately, some do not meet our financial expectations. While our underlying business is strong, these specific stores haven’t performed as well as we hoped,” a spokesperson told the Washington Examiner.

“There is no single cause for why a store closes and our decision is based on several factors, including historic and current financial performance, and is in line with the threshold that guides our strategy to close underperforming locations,” the statement continued.

In December, President and CEO of Walmart Inc. Doug McMillon said that “theft is an issue. It is higher than what it has historically been.”

He also revealed that “if that is not corrected, over time, prices will be higher and/or stores will close.”

McMillon evidently wasn’t bluffing as Portland prepares to be without the retailer.

“It is really city by city, location by location, its store managers working with local law enforcement,” he said of how the company deals with theft and other crime.

It sure is something, how fast society is transforming.

It may seem like we’re going in the wrong direction, but in reality, we are on the cusp of a utopia.

We just need to silence the few dissenting voices critical of trannies and defunding the police, and we need to kick up the funding to the Ukraine until it hits 100% of the GDP.

Cynthia Nixon — who ran unsuccessfully for New York governor in 2018 — tweeted her comment along with her disbelief shoplifting can be prosecuted as a crime. “As so many families can’t make ends meet right now, I can’t imagine thinking that the way to solve the problem of people stealing basic necessities out of desperation is to prosecute them,” she tweeted.

Her comment set off a chain of criticism, with some questioning her seemingly lax attitude toward theft and accusing her of being an out-of-touch, wealthy progressive. Others noted Tide laundry detergent has become a form of currency in certain criminal circles.

Shoplifting has recently had serious consequences in the drug store industry, where stores can operate on slim margins. A wave of shoplifting has forced Walgreens to close ten stores in San Francisco, with one store reportedly losing $1,000 a day to theft.

Rich people saying “we should just allow poor people to steal” seems like one of the more bizarre things that can happen, but I imagine this is not a new line of thought for the rich.

I could see corrupt elite during the collapse of Rome responding to poverty by recommending that theft be legalized.

Of course, it’s mostly black people and other racial minorities that steal in the first place. White people tend to have some notion of dignity.

Police are searching for three women who were caught on camera pepper-spraying and assaulting a store owner who caught them trying to steal merchandise at a Maryland mall.

Montgomery County Police have released surveillance video showing three young women wreaking havoc at Westfield Wheaton Mall on September 23, where they brutally punched and pepper-sprayed four people including a store owner who caught them shoplifting.

Cops were first called to the scene around 12.42pm for a stealing incident at a Target at the mall.

When they arrived they were notified of another incident at the opposite end of the mall at Wheaton Beauty Supply store, which cops later said involved the same suspects. Police say in total the trio assaulted four victims.

Shocking surveillance footage from Wheaton Beauty Supply Store shows the women enter the shop holding Target bags then pick up merchandise from the shelves. One woman is seen putting an item into the Target bag.

When they try to walk out they’re stopped by the store owner, a man in a gray T-shirt, who appears to motion towards one woman’s bag, and the women retaliate by aggressively pushing him across the store and out the entrance.

Once they are at the entrance one woman is seen sucker punching the store owner in the face. Then all three woman start to attack the store owner and two started punching him, according to authorities. The women also used pepper spray during the vicious attack.

The owner then herds the women out of the door and they continue their harrowing assault, throwing him back into the store and furiously punching along the way.

One woman with long braids and wearing a denim jacket attacks him across the store throwing an endless stream of punches and has to be restrained by her friend and another shopper at the store.

The women also attacked the owner’s friend who came to his aid and pepper-sprayed him as well.

Finally the three women leave the store.

The shocking footage shows their victim on the ground. Cops say she was allegedly pepper-sprayed by the trio.

When a witness sitting his car saw the assault tried to intervene and took video of the attack on his phone. Then the three suspected thieves surrounded his car and pepper-sprayed him.

Following the brawl, the women fled toward the Wheaton Metro Station.
