Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a vocal vaccine skeptic and activist lawyer, appeared on track to become the nation’s health secretary after winning the crucial support of Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy, a doctor who says Kennedy has assured him he would not topple the nation’s childhood vaccination program.

In a starkly partisan vote, the Republican-controlled Senate Finance Committee advanced Kennedy’s nomination 14-13, sending his bid to oversee the $1.7 trillion U.S. Health and Human Services agency for a full vote on the Senate floor.

All Democrats on the committee opposed Kennedy, whose family name had been synonymous with their party for generations before he aligned with President Donald Trump during the 2024 presidential campaign. They sounded an alarm on Kennedy’s work to sow doubt around vaccine safety and his potential to profit off lawsuits over drugmakers.

Remember that the Democrats let Marco Rubio sail through like a cool breeze on a summer afternoon.

The vote was 99-0. Every Democrat voted for him.

Kennedy can’t get one.

A full Senate vote has not yet been scheduled, but with Cassidy’s vote no longer in doubt Kennedy’s nomination is likely to succeed absent any last-minute vote switches. Kennedy has been among the more contentious of Trump’s Cabinet choices, and Republicans coalescing around him showed another powerful measure of near lockstep allegiance to the president.

Cassidy said in a speech later on the Senate floor that, in exchange for his support, Kennedy has promised not to make changes to existing vaccine recommendations that have been made by a federal advisory committee and has agreed not to scrub the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of statements that clarify vaccines do not cause autism. In addition, Cassidy said Kennedy will consult with him on new hires for the agency and appear if asked quarterly before the Senate’s health committee, which Cassidy chairs. A 30-day notice will be sent to the committee if Kennedy seeks to make changes federal vaccine safety monitoring programs.

“He will be the secretary,” Cassidy said. “But I believe he will also be a partner in working for this end.”

Donald Trump has ordered the release of thousands of classified governmental documents about the 1963 assassination of John F Kennedy, which has fueled conspiracy theories for decades.

The executive order the president signed on Thursday also aims to declassify the remaining federal records relating to the assassinations of Robert F Kennedy and the Rev Martin Luther King Jr. The order is among a flurry of executive actions Trump has quickly taken the first week of his second term.

But it’s not clear how much they will be allowed to redact. If they release everything and it’s fully redacted, that won’t really mean anything at all.

I don’t think there is any way that documents implicating the CIA in the assassination will be allowed to be released.

Speaking to reporters, Trump said: “Everything will be revealed.”

“That’s a big one,” he added as he signed the order.

Trump has nominated Kennedy’s nephew, Robert F Kennedy Jr, to be the health secretary in his new administration. Kennedy, whose father, Robert F Kennedy, was assassinated in Los Angeles in 1968 while running for president, has said he is not convinced that a lone gunman was solely responsible for the assassination of his uncle, John F Kennedy, in 1963.

He’s said a lot more than that.

He says the CIA did it and he’s sure of that.

The order directs the director of national intelligence and the attorney general to develop a plan within 15 days to declassify the remaining John F Kennedy records, and within 45 days for the other two cases. It was not clear when the records would actually be released.

He should have just ordered them to immediately dump all of it in 24 hours.

We might get something interesting. Last time, when Trump tried to release all the files and was blocked by CIA director Mike Pompeo, an alleged pedophile and cannibal, the files that were released contained nothing of interest at all.

Kennedy has pulled in roughly $10 million in income from his work over the past year, which includes speaking fees, leading an anti-vaccine nonprofit and legal fees, government ethics forms filed for his nomination show. He has millions of dollars more tied up in investments and other assets.

If confirmed, he has promised to stop collecting fees on some of his vaccine lawsuits involving the U.S. government.

Kennedy is a lawyer who has worked on lawsuits involving environmental and vaccine injury claims against some of the country’s biggest companies. He also said he would forgo payment from claims against the U.S. under the National Vaccine Injury Compensation program.

As of December, Kennedy said in the filing that he is no longer serving as chairman or chief legal counsel for Children’s Health Defense, his nonprofit that launched lawsuits against the federal government over vaccines, including the authorization of the COVID-19 shot in children. He previously made a $326,000 salary for three months of work at the nonprofit in 2023.

But he will still benefit in other ways from his anti-vaccine advocacy, which has spanned several years. Compensation will continue to flow into Kennedy’s bank accounts from referral fees for legal cases that don’t involve the U.S. government, including fees he collects from a law firm that’s sued Merck over Gardasil, its human papillomavirus vaccine that prevents cervical cancer. Last year, he made over $850,000 from the arrangement.

The complaint, filed by Accountable.US, a left-leaning watchdog group, could complicate Kennedy’s confirmation as Donald Trump’s nominee to be health and human services secretary, when he is expected to be subject to rigorous questioning at a Senate hearing.

 In a filing with the New York state board of elections, the watchdog calls for an investigation into Kennedy for “registering for and voting” from a state address at which he does not live.

“New York statute … provides that any person who ‘[k]nowingly gives a false residence within the election district when registering as an elector’ is guilty of a felony,” the complaint states.

It goes on to say that Kennedy voted by mail-in ballot from an address in Katonah, about 45 miles from New York City, which was at the centre of a state court ruling about his eligibility to appear on the New York ballot as a presidential candidate.

That referred to a ruling last August by a New York judge upholding a legal challenge from another watchdog group asserting that Kennedy had falsely listed the address as his residential home in order to gain ballot access.

Kennedy claimed he had rented a room at the address from a childhood friend. But his argument was undermined by testimony from the friend’s spouse that he had only ever spent one night there. The complaint alleged that Kennedy actually lives in California.

The New York ruling excluding Kennedy from the state ballot was later upheld by the US supreme court after the candidate lodged a series of appeals.

The former Democrat has been nominated to head the Department of Health and Human Services in the next administration, while former Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe has been tapped to head the CIA.

According to Axios, RFK Jr. has been telling people that Fox Kennedy would help get to the truth about JFK. She has previous experience at the CIA, having been an undercover agent for almost a decade.

McAfee, whose dairy products were recalled after state officials detected bird flu virus in milk samples, said that the transition team for Kennedy, the nominee to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, asked him to apply for a position advising on raw milk policy and standards development. The idea, he told the Guardian, would be to create a “raw milk ordinance”, mirroring the existing federal “standard milk ordinance”.

Kennedy is a notable fan of raw, or unpasteurized, milk, including McAfee’s products. If confirmed, he has said, he would work to remove restrictions on raw milk, which the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have so far advised against consuming.

Kennedy’s team did not respond immediately to the Guardian’s request for comment.

In a post on X in October, Kennedy said that with Trump in office, the FDA’s “war on public health” would end, as would its “aggressive suppression” of raw milk.

It’s simply not true that putting fluoride on your teeth (let alone drinking it) helps your teeth in any way. It’s a complete fabrication.

Kennedy made the declaration Saturday on Twitter/X alongside a variety of claims about the heath effects of fluoride.

“On January 20, the Trump White House will advise all U.S​. water systems to remove fluoride from public water,” Kennedy wrote. Trump and his wife, Melania Trump, “want to Make America Healthy Again”, he added, repeating a phrase Trump often uses and links to Kennedy.

Trump told NBC News on Sunday that he had not spoken to Kennedy about fluoride yet, “but it sounds OK to me. You know it’s possible.”

The Republican nominee declined to say whether he would seek a cabinet role for Kennedy, a job that would require Senate confirmation, but added: “He’s going to have a big role in the administration.”

Asked whether banning certain vaccines would be on the table, Trump said he would talk to Kennedy and others about that. Trump described Kennedy as “a very talented guy and has strong views”.

Fluoride is a chemical waste product. It gets dumped in the water because that is much cheaper than disposing of it as a toxic waste. That’s the real conspiracy.

It does also appear that it impairs cognitive function in certain amounts (as well as causing all kinds of other health problems). People claim that this is why they want it in the water, and that’s maybe partially true, but the actual mechanism of getting it in the water is not the government saying “let’s put this in the water to make people dumber and tell them it’s for their teeth,” it’s the government saying “we’re being compelled by lobbyists to dispose of this industrial waste product in the water supply.”

It’s utterly ridiculous how corrupt the US government is. In no other country could you get away with something like this.

Well, some other countries can. But they are all countries under the influence of the US Empire.

Our greatest ally made it a crime to dump these chemicals in the water.

Bobby has a lot of good ideas, and I do hope some of them get implemented.

But it seems very unlikely.
