The Australian man who pleaded guilty to killing 51 Muslims in a terrorist attack in Christchurch in March 2019 has chosen to represent himself at his sentencing next month.

Brenton Tarrant pleaded guilty in March to 51 counts of murder, 40 of attempted murder and a terrorism charge after dozens of worshippers were gunned down at two mosques in New Zealand last year.

He appeared to have posted a white supremacist manifesto online before the attack, which was live-streamed on Facebook.

At a briefing hearing in the high court at Christchurch on Monday morning, Tarrant’s lawyers confirmed they were withdrawing their state-funded representation of him.

Tarrant appeared by audio-visual link from his maximum-security prison in Auckland.

“Because Mr Tarrant wishes to represent himself at sentencing, I will be appointing a lawyer to fulfil the role of standby counsel,” said justice Cameron Mander, in a statement.

“The role of standby counsel is to assist the defendant if and to the extent the defendant wishes to accept that counsel’s assistance.”

Aya Al-Umari, whose brother Hussein Al-Umari was killed at al Noor mosque, said the gunman’s decision to represent himself was a bid for attention. “It is a tactic to want to stay relevant in the news by any means he can,” she told the Guardian.

Tarrant will be sentenced on 24 August, and faces the possibility of life in prison without chance for parole – a term no one in New Zealand has received before.

The sentencing is expected to be lengthy – scheduled to take three days – as dozens of his victims and the bereaved families are likely to give statements.

The gunman’s decision to represent himself created “an incredibly difficult task for the judge” to ensure the proceedings were tightly controlled, said Chris Gallavin, a law professor at Massey University in Palmerston North.

But he added that New Zealand’s British-derived legal tradition was “more austere” than the often fluid court proceedings seen in countries such as the United States, and there would be limited opportunities for Tarrant to speak – especially if he looked to air ideological views.

The judge “can’t deny him the opportunity to speak, but he’ll pounce on him if it looks like he’s using it as an opportunity to grandstand,” Gallavin said.

Serbia protested against the move and put its troops on high alert in response.

If a deal emerges, “Serbia will be crippled and divided within, because most of the Serbian public is against the partition,” said Pavic. “It is a very delicate issue for both the Serbian president and the Russian president.”

Also, he added that if the status of Kosovo as a sovereign nation is consolidated by Serbia’s recognition, the likely result would be Kosovo becoming part of Albania, a NATO member, and Moscow sees NATO as hostile to Russia.

Olympic medalist McKayla Maroney alleges USA Gymnastics tried to silence her for almost a year by making her sign non-disclosure agreements as part of a financial settlement, which she used to pay for psychological treatment, according to a lawsuit filed Wednesday in California’s Superior Court, per NBC News.

The agreement was allegedly signed months before the initial accusations against former Team USA doctor Dr. Larry Nassar surfaced. He pleaded guilty in November to multiple charges of sexual assault before being sentenced to 60 years in prison the following month in a separate child pornography case.

“Plaintiff alleges that Defendant USAG had a plan to keep the sexual abuse of [ Dr. Larry] Nassar quiet, and allow Nassar to quietly leave USAG, further silence his victims,” the court docs claim.

Maroney’s lawsuit also alleges USA Gymnastics wanted a confidentiality accord so “it could further conceal and shield from public scrutiny, outside investigation, and law enforcement, the true nature of Nassar’s horrific sexual abuse of minors.”

A former Bosnian Croat military commander swallowed what he said was poison in a U.N. war crimes courtroom on Wednesday and died shortly after losing an appeal against his 20-year prison term.

Slobodan Praljak’s apparent courtroom suicide, which was broadcast on a video feed, came in the final minutes of the last judgment at the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, which closes next month after 24 years.

The white-bearded Praljak, 72, was taken to hospital after drinking from a flask or glass as an ICTY judge read out appeals rulings against him and five other convicted Bosnian Croat war criminals, tribunal spokesman Nenad Golcevski said.

I just drank poison,” the ex-general told the stunned court. “I am not a war criminal. I oppose this conviction.” After gulping down the drink, he sat back down and slumped in his chair, said a lawyer who was in the courtroom at the time.

“Praljak drank a liquid in court and quickly fell ill,” Golcevski said. He was treated by tribunal medical staff, but “passed away today at the HMC hospital in The Hague”, he said.

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley on Thursday called on countries to suspend providing weapons to Myanmar over violence against Rohingya Muslims until the military puts sufficient accountability measures in place.

It was the first time the United States called for punishment of military leaders behind the repression, but stopped short of threatening to reimpose U.S. sanctions which were suspended under the Obama administration.

“We cannot be afraid to call the actions of the Burmese authorities what they appear to be – a brutal, sustained campaign to cleanse the country of an ethnic minority,” Haley told the U.N. Security Council, the first time Washington has echoed the U.N.’s accusation that the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people in Rakhine State was ethnic cleansing.

The right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has pledged to get rid of at least 200,000 more migrants a year than it takes in as part of its draft election manifesto released yesterday.

The populist party has demanded the closure of the nation’s borders, restriction of Islamic practices and promised to fight against the “oligarchy” in its election programme.

In their manifesto, the AfD wrote: “The expatriation of criminal migrants should be possible: firstly, in cases of serious criminality within ten years of naturalisation.

“Secondly, for migrants in terrorist organisations (for example, ISIS); thirdly when belonging to criminal clans, even if the deportees thereby become stateless.”

The measures would only apply to first generation migrants who had managed to obtain German citizenship after arrival, the party confirmed.

Currently poling at around 11 per cent, the AfD is expected to swoop its first MPs following the election later this year.

The party believes that “Islam is not part of German” – despite 4.5million Muslims living in the country.

The group claimed that Germany is “losing its cultural identity because of a flawed notion of tolerance” and that they “want to pass on to coming generations a country that is still recognisable as our Germany”.

The party added that it wants to “end of the euro experiment” and return to sovereign national governments.

Petry also added that when immigrants are expelled, German authorities will be instructed to “TAKE THEIR COATS.”

Our results are striking and sobering. They suggest that public opposition to any further migration from predominantly Muslim states is by no means confined to Trump’s electorate in the US but is fairly widespread.

In our survey, carried out before President Trump’s executive order was announced, respondents were given the following statement: ‘All further migration from mainly Muslim countries should be stopped’. They were then asked to what extent did they agree or disagree with this statement.

Overall, across all 10 of the European countries an average of 55% agreed that all further migration from mainly Muslim countries should be stopped, 25% neither agreed nor disagreed and 20% disagreed. Majorities in all but two of the ten states agreed, ranging from 71% in Poland, 65% in Austria, 53% in Germany and 51% in Italy to 47% in the United Kingdom and 41% in Spain. In no country did the percentage that disagreed surpass 32%.

Public opposition to further migration from Muslim states is especially intense in Austria, Poland, Hungary, France and Belgium, despite these countries having very different sized resident Muslim populations. In each of these countries, at least 38% of the sample ‘strongly agreed’ with the statement. With the exception of Poland, these countries have either been at the centre of the refugee crisis or experienced terrorist attacks in recent years. It is also worth noting that in most of these states the radical right is, to varying degrees, entrenched as a political force and is looking to mobilize this angst over Islam into the ballot box, either at elections in 2017 or longer term.

Our findings also reveal how, across Europe, opposition to Muslim immigration is especially intense among retired, older age cohorts while those aged below 30 are notably less opposed. “We’ve been clear about our values. We oppose discrimination and we wouldn’t do any work to build a registry of Muslim Americans,” spokesman Frank X. Shaw told BuzzFeed on Thursday in response to their questions.
