United Nations human rights experts have urged Thailand not to send 48 Uyghurs in its custody back to China, warning they are at risk of torture, ill-treatment and “irreparable harm” if returned.

Human rights groups and some Thai lawmakers have raised concerns in the past week that the transfer to China of the Uyghurs, who have been held in immigration detention for more than a decade, was imminent. The government has said it has no such plans.

Rights groups accuse Beijing of widespread abuses of Uyghurs, a mainly Muslim ethnic minority that numbers around 10 million in the western region of Xinjiang, including the mass use of surveillance and forced labour in camps. Beijing denies any abuses.

“These persons should not be returned to China,” said U.N. Human Rights Special Rapporteurs in a statement on Tuesday on the 48 Uyghurs.

“Instead, they must be provided with access to asylum procedures and other humanitarian assistance,” the experts said, adding half of the group had serious health conditions.

Thai Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai said last week there was no immediate plan to deport the Uyghurs to China, while national police chief Kittirat Panpetch said on Monday there had been no government order on their deportation.

Babar Baloch, a spokesperson for the U.N. refugee agency said last week the agency was assured by Thai authorities they would not be transferred to China.

China’s embassy in Thailand did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Wednesday.

Incoming U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said during his confirmation hearing last week he will use his country’s strong relationship with Thailand to prevent the Uyghurs from being sent back.

Germany and several other European countries said Monday they are suspending decisions on asylum claims by Syrian nationals because of the unclear situation in their homeland following the fall of Bashar Assad.

Germany’s Federal Office for Migration and Refugees said Monday that more than 47,000 applications are currently pending. It said it would reassess the situation and resume decisions once things in Syria have stabilized.

Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said it’s not yet possible to predict “concrete possibilities to return” and “it would be unserious to speculate about this in such a volatile situation.”

Her ministry said that, as of Oct. 31, there were 974,136 Syrian nationals in the country, the majority of whom had some kind of refugee or other protected status.

In neighboring Austria, Chancellor Karl Nehammer also tasked his interior minister with suspending decisions on current asylum applications by Syrians, the Austria Press Agency reported.

“It is important to first establish facts, to put asylum and family reunion procedures on hold,” Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg said. “We need to wait until the dust settles, so we can see what is happening, what the next points are.”

Sweden’s Migration Agency said it will also pause decisions on Syrian asylum cases, arguing that it isn’t possible at present to assess applicants’ reasons for seeking protection. It didn’t specify how long the pause would last, but said a similar decision was made in connection with the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan in 2021.

In Finland, the director of the Department for International Protection at the Finnish Immigration Service, Antti Lehtinen, told public broadcaster YLE that decisions have been suspended there, and he can’t immediately estimate when they will resume.

In Norway, the Directorate of Immigration announced a similar decision, saying that it has put asylum applications from Syria on hold “until further notice.”

Police have carried out dawn raids in several cities in Germany and France in an internationally coordinated operation to smash a network accused of smuggling migrants to Britain in small boats.

Coordinated with Europol, the French security service and British police after months of intelligence-gathering, the raids on Wednesday concentrated on western German cities where gangs are believed to have procured small boats and found migrants wanting to be taken to the UK from France across the English Channel.

A network of Iraqi Kurds, some of whom are believed to be living in asylum seeker shelters in the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) is accused of “smuggling… irregular migrants from the Middle East and East Africa to France and the UK using small, inflatable boats”, Germany’s federal police said in a statement.

More than 500 officers took part in the operation, which was connected to 10 international arrest warrants, in locations ranging from asylum seeker shelters to private homes and warehouses in cities including Essen, Bochum, Gelsenkirchen in NRW and the southern state of Baden-Württemberg, as well as others in France. The arrest warrants had been issued by a court in the French city of Lille, German police said.

Of particular focus was an asylum seekers’ shelter in Essen, which was surrounded by armed police early on Wednesday, according to the tabloid Bild, which had reporters on the scene.

Members of the German anti-terrorist special forces unit GSG 9 led the raids, assisted by more than 20 French and British investigators, and officials from the European Union’s law enforcement agency Europol. British and French police were reportedly on the ground during the operation in Germany.

In the town of Bad Griesbach, a mayor told the district administration he will not accept any refugees. The district wants him to take in 35 Ukrainian refugees into the small town, but the mayor, Jürgen Fundke, who belongs to the Non-Partisan Voters’ Association, refuses to register any of them.

Fundke has made the move despite threats from the supervisory authority. District Administrator Raimund Kneidinger, of the Christian Socialist Union (CSU), issued an official order to take them in by Wednesday. The order was delivered to him personally.

Instead of bowing down, the mayor simply said he will not do it, telling Bayerischer Rundfunk that he believes he has the upper legal hand. “What do they want to do? Do they want to suspend me? They can’t and aren’t allowed to. I’ve spoken to a lawyer,” said Fundke.

Regarding the various legal threats he is facing, Fundke said, “I don’t even read them. Maybe I’ll read about it at Christmas.” Instead, Fundke says his city cannot bear any more foreigners. Already 2,300 people in the small town of 9,750 residents are now foreigners.

He notes that kindergartens and schools are “bursting apart.”

Due to Fundke’s refusal, the Ukrainians cannot enter the town, as they have no official place of residence. The district office accuses Fundke of partaking in “illegal” behavior.

Bad Griesbach already has 90 Ukrainians, and just in September, 140 migrants from various other countries were placed inside an empty hotel. The town already has the highest proportion of Ukrainian refugees in the entire district.

The European Union will provide €1 billion in financial aid to Lebanon over three years to prop up the country’s economy and help prevent a surge in refugees leaving the country for Europe.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the move on Thursday morning following a meeting with Lebanese caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati and Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides in Lebanon’s capital, Beirut.

Lawmakers in Norway have slammed a decision this week by the local council in a southern city to only take in Ukrainian refugees and not others, claiming they will be easier to integrate in the society.

The government and the opposition have also said they consider the decision by the council in Drammen to be in violation of Norwegian laws. Up to a third of the population of Drammen are immigrant or have an immigrant background.

Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, who heads a center-left government, condemned Tuesday’s decision by Drammen and said that Norway’s 357 municipalities cannot decide for themselves which refugees they accept — only how many they can take in.

Such a decision is “not legal,” said Gahr Støre.

Ireland is headed towards some kind of widespread civil violence.

The situation is not calming down, and in fact, everything the government does is making it worse, while more and more people take to the streets to protest and migrant centers continue to burn down.

Plans to house asylum seekers in a disused Eir building just outside of Arklow town have been withdrawn. 

Last week hundreds of locals marched through the town expressing dismay at the government’s decision to house an as then unconfirmed number of migrants seeking international protection or Ukrainian refugees in the building.

In a statement ‘Arklow Says No’ said that a statement issued yesterday evening by local Councillor Peer Leonard was “very welcome”.

“The Arklow Says No Campaign were already notified of this very positive development but were asked to wait until official confirmation was received and the process of delisting the site as an accommodation location had been signed off.”

“We await that written confirmation.” it said.

“We are very hopeful that this will bring our positive, community based, and supported protest to an end. Needless to say, we will return if any other proposal to utilize the building for IPAS purposes is brought forward. Any potential bidders that seek to achieve this goal will meet with the same kind of peaceful community resistance.” the statement continued.

“Until we have total written confirmation, we remain in place. Nevertheless, we are amazed by the outpouring of public support and the many acts of generosity from local businesses. This protest has generated enormous awareness of the damage government policy is creating.”

The Arklow Says No Campaign expressed special thanks to Independent TD for Laois Offaly Carol Nolan, who it said “first broke the news to us following her determination to assist the locals who were operating in a vacuum of knowledge.”

Local Cllr Pat Fitzgerald was also thanked as being “the only local Cllr to state on public media he would unequivocally stand behind us and acknowledge us a group of ordinary decent residents with real concerns.”

Yesterday evening Councillor Peir Leonard said in a statement that she had been informed “verbally that all open cases of enquiry with regard to use of the building by IPAS had now ceased.

However Leonard pointed out that this “does not mean that it mightn’t be looked at in the future” adding that but for now “all engagements with the Dept have been closed by speculated purchaser,”

Ireland is a democracy, which generally means that a protest doesn’t mean anything at all, because you don’t have any choice in what the government does.

The only reason the government is reacting to these protests is that the Irish have already set a city on fire, burned up police cars, attacked police, and continually burned down buildings.

I’m anti-violence and anti-crime and so on, but it’s simply a fact that the threat of a civil uprising is the one and only thing that a democracy government will respond to. They could give a fuck about your protest march – unless behind your protest march are a bunch of soccer hooligans in baklavas holding cans of gasoline.
