Korea has formally become a “super-aged” society as the share of its population aged 65 or over surpassed 20 percent, the interior ministry said Tuesday, as the country copes with a demographic crisis of a rapidly aging population and low births.

As of Monday, the number of Koreans aged 65 or older stood at 10.24 million, accounting for 20.0 percent of the country’s total population of 51.22 million, according to the ministry.

The United Nations classifies countries where more than 7 percent of the population is 65 or older as an aging society, those with over 14 percent as an aged society and those with more than 20 percent as a super-aged society.

The age group in Korea has gradually increased over the years, standing at 4.94 million in 2008.

It accounted for 10 percent of the population in 2008 before surpassing 15 percent in 2019 and reaching 19.05 percent in January this year.

The authorities in countries with destroyed birthrates continue to look around in confusion and talk about about “economic issues,” despite the fact that the countries with the collapsing birthrates are the richest in the world.

The sharply declining birthrate in Korea is projected to result in the closures of approximately one-third of daycare centers and kindergartens in the country by 2028, a report showed Tuesday.

According to the Korea Institute of Child Care and Education, there has been a 21.1 percent reduction in the number of nurseries nationwide, decreasing from 39,171 in 2018 to 30,923 in 2022. Similarly, kindergartens witnessed a 5.1 percent decline, dropping from 9,021 to 8,562 over the same period.

The forecast primarily stems from the diminishing number of infants from newborn to five years old. The report indicates that this trend is expected to exacerbate further.

Statistics Korea estimates the country’s fertility rate for 2023 to be 0.72 baby born per woman, based on the data from 2022. The agency anticipates an ongoing yearly decline in the infant population, with a notable projection that the number of children less than a year old is expected to drop below 200,000 by 2026.

Daycare center enrollment in Korea continues to slide, dropping from over 1.41 million in 2018 to 1.09 million in 2022.

Similarly, kindergarten enrollment declined from 675,998 in 2018 to 552,812 in 2022, marking an 18.2 percent decrease.

The report predicts a significant reduction in the number of daycare centers and kindergartens, from 39,053 in 2022 to 26,637 in 2028 — meaning approximately 31.8 percent of those institutions, or 12,416, are at risk of shutting down over the next four years.

Korea’s total fertility rate during the third quarter stood at 0.7, the lowest-ever for a third quarter.

Considering the pattern that the number of births decreases toward the end of a year, there is a possibility that the rate could fall to the 0.6 range in the fourth quarter of this year.

According to the latest data by Statistics Korea on Wednesday, the total fertility rate — the average number of children a woman is expected to give birth to during her lifetime — in the third quarter went down to 0.7, a decrease of 0.1 from a year ago.

The rate was the same figure as the fourth quarter of last year and the second quarter of this year, both of which were record lows for their respective quarters ever seen in the time since related statistics began being compiled in 2009. The rate, which rebounded to 0.81 in the first quarter of this year, has remained at 0.7 for two consecutive quarters during the second and third quarters.

The total fertility rate fell in all 17 cities and provinces across the country. Seoul had the lowest rate of 0.54 babies per woman, followed by 0.64 in Busan. South Jeolla Province recorded the highest rate of 0.96.

The number of births recorded 56,794 in the third quarter, a decrease of 7,381 or 11.5 percent, compared to the same period last year.

Women are entirely responsible for this. There is nothing else to say about it.

Nearby Taiwan is just below Japan with 1.24 baby per woman, while neighbouring South Korea has the world’s lowest rate at just 0.78.

Again, they are the vaxed.

Households with children under 18 stood at 9.917 million, down 3.4 percentage points from 2019 data to a record low of 18.3 percent of the total, according to the triennial data released by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare.

Child care policy has been a priority for Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s government, which unveiled in June measures on child-rearing to reverse the falling birthrate in the aging nation.

Among these households, 49.3 percent have one child, 38.0 percent have two, while those with three or more stood at 12.7 percent, the data showed.

Separate data released earlier in the year by the ministry showed that the number of babies born in Japan in 2022 fell below 800,000 for the first time since records began in 1899.

However, when you get down to the details, we do run into the fact that the way technology has impacted our lives since the Industrial Revolution has been overwhelmingly negative. I don’t think “convenience” was ever a valid argument, but you used to be able to say that there were gains in the medical sector that offset the declining social fabric. A record number of U.S. 40-year-olds have never married and most live alone, according to a new analysis of Census Bureau data going back more than a century.

The Pew Research Center reported Wednesday that 25% of 40-year-olds in 2021 had never been married, up from 20% in 2010. Most lived alone, with just 22% of never-married adults ages 40 to 44 reporting last year that they cohabitated with a romantic partner.

The trend is “notable because the share of 40-year-olds who had completed at least a bachelor’s degree was much higher in 2021 than in 1980,” 39% vs. 18%, said Richard Fry, a Pew senior researcher.

“More-highly educated 40-year-olds are more likely to have married, but the growth of this group has not reversed the overall trend of delaying or forgoing marriage,” Mr. Fry said in a summary of the findings.

In the 1900 Census, 16% of 40-year-olds reported never having been married, a number that gradually dropped to a low of 6% in 1980. The number has risen steeply every year since then.

According to Pew, people born starting in the 1960s have increasingly delayed marriage and a growing number have not wed.

“If that pattern holds, a similar share of today’s never-married 40-year-olds will marry in the coming decades,” Mr. Fry said.

The Pew study did not consider fertility. But more people delaying marriage until after 40 could add to declining birth rates, officials at the nonprofit polling company told The Washington Times.

“Demographic research shows that when people get married later, it can affect their fertility,” said Carolina Aragão, a Pew research associate specializing in fertility. “Those who have children after getting married at an older age tend to have fewer kids.”

This is a thing which will probably be stricken from the record soon enough.
