CBS19:

Funeral services have been announced for a Panola County deputy who was killed Tuesday morning in the line of duty.

Visitation for Deputy Chris Dickerson is scheduled for Friday, January 3, from 5:30 p.m. – 8 p.m., at the Carthage Civic Center. The funeral is slated for Saturday, January 4, at 2 p.m., also at the Carthage Civic Center.

Just before 2 a.m., on New Year’s Eve, Deputy Dickerson, who was identified to CBS19 by the Panola County Sheriff’s Office, conducted a traffic stop on Farm-to-Market Road 10, near Farm-to-Market Road 2260.

Preliminary information released by the PCSO indicates Deputy Dickerson stopped an SUV on the northbound side of FM 10 when the driver suddenly exited the vehicle and fired a weapon numerous times at the deputy. The deputy returned fire and the suspect drove off.

Area residents who heard the gunshots, including a volunteer firefighter, found Deputy Dickerson and called for help. The deputy was taken to an area hospital where he later died.

The suspect, identified as 47-year-old Gregory Newson, was captured by Shreveport police and will be extradited back to Texas. He is charged with capital murder which would make him eligible for the death penalty, if convicted.

RSHV News 1 in Shreveport reports Newson led authorities on a high-speed chase for an hour before crashing on Highway 3132, near the West 70th Street exit in Shreveport. More than 30 units were working the scene of the crash Tuesday morning.

WREG:

A Panola County constable was killed in a head-on crash Thursday afternoon, authorities said, and the teens allegedly responsible are facing murder charges.

According to Panola County Sheriff’s deputies, law enforcement officers were chasing the teens in a stolen truck when the suspects crashed into another law enforcement officer at Highway 35 South and Highway 6 in Batesville. That officer was killed.

Mississippi Highway Patrol identified the officer who was killed as Constable Raye Hawkins, 57, of Courtland, Mississippi. Hawkins was attempting to join in on the chase when the crash occurred.

The two teenagers were then taken into custody.

The suspects were identified as 16-year-old Darion Dogan and 15-year-old Jonathan Taylor. Champion said both will face felony murder charges and, because of the seriousness of the charges, will be tried as adults.

Jessica Chambers was burned alive by having propellant pumped into her mouth and nostrils and then ignited.

Authorities in Mississippi questioned and released a man over the killing of a teenager who was set on fire and burned to death over the weekend, according to local media.

Derrick Turner, 31, had been held in the Panola County jail since Monday for questioning in the grisly killing of Jessica Chambers, 19, according to NBC affiliate WMC. He was released on Wednesday afternoon and told WMC that he had not seen Chambers in a few months.

Chambers was last seen at a gas station Saturday night around 6:30 p.m. She was found alive, and on fire, about 90 minutes later near her car on a rural road in Panola County. She died at a hospital in Memphis; no arrests have been made in the case, according to The Clarion-Ledger. Her death was being investigated as a homicide and the initial autopsy shows she died from burns covering 98 percent of her body, the newspaper reported.

Calls placed to the local district attorney and the sheriff’s office seeking an update on the investigation weren’t immediately returned.

Chief Cole Haley of the Courtland Fire Department said emergency responders first came upon the scene of a burning car and thought it was fairly routine.

Jessica Chambers was filled full of lighter fluid and then set on fire.

Update: Friends of Jessica Chambers are claiming on social media that an arrest has been made or an arrest is eminent. They are also citing an unidentified “abusive” ex-boyfriend.

Police say Jessica Chambers was beaten. Then lighter fluid was sprayed in her mouth and nose, as well as her body. She was set on fire inside her vehicle.

Firefighters say they arrived at the scene to find Jessica Chambers conscious, walking, but fully engulfed in flames. Authorities say she was burned on nearly 100% of her body. Only the bottoms of her feet were spared.

She uttered a few words to paramedics before she died. Police believe she was trying to tell them who set her on fire.

The horrific torture murder took place in Panola County. This is a rural county with 34,700 people. It is roughly half white and half black.

Police say they are looking for “two men” who may have been in contact with Jessica right before the murder. Police have not released any details about the two men.

From WMC Action 5 News…

Family members of a teenager burned alive on Saturday night are desperate for answers in the heinous Mississippi murder.

Jessica Chambers, 19, was found burning near her car that was also engulfed in flames. She was flown to a hospital in Memphis but later died.

Her father, Ben Chambers, said investigators told him his daughter was set on fire.

“When the fire department got there, she was walking down the road on fire,” he said. “Only part of her body that wasn’t burned was the bottom of her feet.”

He continued as he held back tears, “They squirted lighter fluid down her throat and in her nose, and apparently they knocked her out. She had a big gash on top of her head.”

Ben Chambers worked as an employee for Panola County Sheriff’s Office. He has faith that his friends and co-workers will get to the bottom of the crime.

Several people in town are taking to Facebook asking for #justiceforjessica.

Thomas Schlender was murdered and then his body left in his car. He would still be alive to this day, if Blacks and Whites lived separately.

A jury found James Willie guilty in the murder of Thomas Schlender, who was killed in Panola County, Miss. in 2012.

Thomas Schlender of Nebraska was found shot in his car in the median of Interstate 55 in Panola County near Pope.

Known as the “roadside killer,” Willie is also accused of shooting Lori Ann Carswell in Tunica County to death a few days after killing Schlender. There was a mistrial in Carswell’s case weeks ago.

A gun and bullet casing belonging to Willie were found to match the evidence in the roadside killings. Investigators believe robbery was the motive behind both shootings.

Willie received life in prison with a possibility for parole.
