The Jewish population in the West Bank grew at twice the rate of the general Israeli population last year, according to an advocacy group that hopes the Trump administration will support policies that help accelerate the growth of settlements in the occupied territory.

The West Bank’s Jewish-settler population rose by roughly 2.3% — over 12,000 people — last year, reaching 529,450, according to a report by WestBankJewishPopulationStats.com, based on official government figures.

That was a slight dip from the 2.9% growth rate in 2023, but roughly double the 1.1% population growth rate inside Israel proper.

The number of Jewish settlers in the West Bank could grow “much higher” under the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump, Baruch Gordon, the director of the group that publishes the data, said Tuesday.

Israel captured the West Bank in the 1967 Mideast war and has built about 130 settlements and dozens of settlement outposts in a bid to cement its control over the territory. The Palestinians seek the area as the heartland of a future state and say the presence of settlements makes independence impossible.

Nearly all of the international community, including the former Biden administration, opposes the settlements as obstacles to peace.

The International Court of Justice ruled in July that the occupation of the West Bank was illegal and said that it violated Palestinians’ right to self-determination. It said Israeli policy in the territories constituted “systemic discrimination” based on religion, race or ethnic origin, and that Israel had already effectively annexed large parts of the territory.

Republicans in Congress are taking further steps to ignore Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and start referring to the territory by Israel’s name “Judea and Samaria.”

Senator Tom Cotton proposed a Senate bill Thursday that would eliminate federal use of the term “West Bank,” removing it from all official U.S. government documents. His measure matches a bill that was filed in the House in February by Republican Representatives Claudia Tenney, Randy Weber, and Anthony D’Esposito.

Cotton claims that Judea and Samaria is the historically accurate name for the territory, and asserts Israel’s claims over what is internationally recognized as occupied territory.

“The Jewish people’s legal and historic rights to Judea and Samaria goes back thousands of years. The U.S. should stop using the politically charged term West Bank to refer to the biblical heartland of Israel,” Cotton said in a statement.

“Politically charged” is quite the exaggeration from Cotton. The International Court of Justice ruled in July that Israel’s occupation of the West Bank is illegal under international law, calling into question their terminology for the territory. Since Israel began its occupation of Palestine in 1967 following the Six-Day War, Israel has built 160 settlements that house close to 700,000 Jews in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

The Republican-sponsored bills seem to confirm speculation that Israel plans to annex the West Bank with U.S. support. Israel has embarked on a military campaign in the territory, killing nearly 1,000 Palestinians in the West Bank since 2022. Israeli settlers have attacked Palestinian residents in addition to Israeli military raids, and those assaults have increased since Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.

This is all ridiculous.

The Jewish religion is not connected to the ancient Israelite religion in any meaningful way. Maybe the Jews have some ancestors from the region, but obviously the Palestinians do as well, and more so, as do Greeks and others.

A series of Israeli raids and airstrikes in towns and villages in the occupied West Bank that stretched overnight from Monday into late Tuesday have killed at least eight people, according to Palestinian authorities and local residents.

Two Palestinians were killed in the town of Tamoun, said the governor of nearby Tubas, Ahmad Assad, alleging that one of the bodies was removed from the scene by the Israeli military with a bulldozer. CCTV footage from the neighborhood, seen by CNN, appeared to show a bulldozer moving a body.

In the village of Al-Shuhada, near the city of Jenin, an Israeli airstrike killed two people, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, who were identified by local residents as a man and his nephew. Footage obtained by CNN of the aftermath of the strike shows bloodied footprints smeared along a dusty pathway.

Elsewhere, at least four people were killed in the city of Qabatya, according to the health ministry and emergency responders. Two were killed by Israeli gunfire, and two others killed when an Israeli military vehicle rammed a car and opened fire, according to residents and video seen by CNN.

Qatari-owned Al Araby TV alleged that Israeli fire in Qabatya also injured a Palestinian employee working there. Rabe’e Al-Munir, a photojournalist, is now hospitalized in stable condition, it said.

CNN has reached out to the Israel Defense Forces for comment on the incidents. Israel has previously described its stepped-up military offensives in the West Bank as targeting militants and “terrorist infrastructure.”

The bloodshed comes as violence surges in the West Bank, where the Israeli military has intensified incursions following the Hamas-led October 7 attacks.

Since October 7, 2023, Israeli troops and settlers have killed at least 775 Palestinians, including 167 children, in the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem, the Palestinian health ministry reported on Tuesday.

Earlier on Monday, Israeli settlers vandalized and set fire to vehicles in the city of Al-Bireh, in what Ramallah governor Laila Ghannam warned “could have ended in a massacre.”

The Israeli army, early Wednesday, conducted a major military operation in the occupied northern West Bank, making it the largest offensive in two decades, Anadolu Agency reports.

The operation, which involves two army brigades, helicopters, drones and bulldozers, particularly targets the cities of Jenin, Tulkarm and Tubas.

At least 11 Palestinians have been killed since the start of the operation, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry’s latest figures.

The operation’s scale and intensity are reminiscent of the 2002 Jenin offensive, underscoring the severity of the current situation.

Since 7 October, Israeli forces have stepped up their raids in the West Bank to a nearly daily basis, targeting civilian infrastructure, refugee camps and residential homes.

Palestinians have also been the target of violent assaults by illegal Israeli settlers.

Israeli forces already have reportedly raided the Jenin refugee camp, cordoned off two hospitals and are planning to storm the Jenin Governmental Hospital, according to Jenin Governor, Kamal Abu Al-Rub.

Meanwhile, Israeli Foreign Minister, Israel Katz, said that the military operation involves the “temporary evacuation of Palestinian residents” from certain areas in the northern West Bank.

The Israeli army also ordered Palestinian residents of the Nour Shams refugee camp in the northern West Bank to evacuate within four hours.

Earlier, Suleiman Al-Zuheiri, a Palestinian activist told Anadolu that the Israeli army notified the Palestinian Civil Liaison to alert residents to leave the Nour Shams refugee camp within four hours.

According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the Israeli army and settlers have displaced a total of 3,100 Palestinians, including 1,375 children, and demolished 1,380 Palestinian structures across the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, making this more than double the number displaced in the 10 months before 7 October. ​​​​​​​

The death toll is expected to rise as clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinian groups, including Hamas and Islamic Jihad, continue.

More than 500 additional Hollywood figures signed the letter overnight condemning Jonathan Glazer‘s Oscars 2024 speech for his best international film win for The Zone of Interest.

The letter, which was published yesterday with 450 signees already attached, denounced the director’s speech, mimicking his own phrasing at the awards show on March 10. The signatories include actors, executives, directors, creators, producers and representatives.

The open letter directly addressed the director’s use of the word “occupation” in his speech, noting, “The use of words like ‘occupation’ to describe an indigenous Jewish people defending a homeland that dates back thousands of years and has been recognized as a state by the United Nations, distorts history.”

Since the letter was published, those behind the letter have been contacted by several people who want to share their thoughts on the speech.

“That speech was a turning point,” says one person familiar with the effort. “It’s taken off in a way that we never expected. People who were more comfortable staying on the sidelines have decided they can no longer remain silent.”

More than 30,000 Palestinians have now been killed in Gaza since 7 October, the Hamas-run health ministry says.

That number equates to about 1.3% of the 2.3 million population of the territory – the latest grim marker of the awful toll of this war.

The ministry says that the majority of those killed were women and children.

Its figures do not differentiate between civilians and fighters when identifying those killed.

In its daily update on Thursday, the ministry said 81 people had been killed in the last 24 hours, bringing the total to 30,035.

The actual number of dead is likely to be far higher as the count does not include those who have not reached hospitals, among them thousands of people still lost under the rubble of buildings hit by Israeli air strikes.

More than 70,000 injured people have been registered by the Gaza ministry of health (MoH), which is the only official source for casualties. Its data is quoted by UN agencies and other international institutions.

The World Health Organization (WHO) says it has a “long-standing co-operation” with the Gaza body and that it has “good capacity in data collection/analysis”. Its previous reporting has been considered credible and “well developed” by the UN agency.

The WHO notes that when the current breakdown of deaths is compared with previous data recorded by the UN from past conflicts in Gaza, “it clearly shows an increasing number of civilians being killed, with a higher proportion of children and women fatalities”.

Asked about its assessment on the number of fatalities and the breakdown of civilians and fighters, Israel’s military told the BBC only that “the number of terrorists killed stands at approximately 10,000”.

Israeli settlers attacked two Palestinian villages in the occupied West Bank late on Saturday, killing one man and torching a car, Palestinian authorities said.

The Palestinian ambulance service said a 38-year-old man in the town of Qarawat Bani Hassan, in the northern West Bank, was shot in the chest and died as residents confronted settlers and Israeli soldiers.

The Israeli military said soldiers arrived at the scene and used live fire to break up the confrontation between residents and settlers. It said Palestinians shot fireworks in response and an Israeli and four Palestinians were injured. The incident was being examined and had been handed over to police, it said.

In a separate incident, Wajih Al-Qat, the head of the local council of the village of Madama near the northern West Bank city of Nablus, said a group of about 15 settlers had burned a car and broke the windows of a house with stones.

There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military on the incident.

The attacks are the latest in a series of similar incidents involving settlers that have drawn condemnation from world leaders including the US president, Joe Biden, whose administration is expected to impose visa bans on extremist settlers.

The Israel military works with the settlers to do these attacks on Palestinians. This has been going on this whole time.
