Emmanuel Macron reportedly ordered that pots and pans be seized from protesters ahead of his visit to a small French town this week. This comes as the French President comes under intense pressure and a ferocious backlash after pushing through his controversial pension reform plans. Police in the town of Ganges in southern France were told to confiscate saucepans, which were deemed ‘portable sound devices’.

One video shared on social media showed a local policeman seizing a small, round, steel saucepan from a protester.

After the ban, demonstrators resorted to throwing eggs and potatoes at the head of state from a distance.

The ban on pots and pans comes as President Macron tours the country in a flailing reconciliation bid.

During his visit to a high school in Ganges, Sébastien Rome, an MP from the leftist party France Unbowed, asked if he was willing to face the demonstrators.

President Macron mocked those on the streets as he responded that he would go “if people are ready to talk, but if it’s just for the eggs and the pans — at my place, these are used to cook”.

At a press conference in Ghana’s capital, Accra on Monday, Zacharopoulou insisted that gay rights are “a question of human rights” which must be protected by law.

The European Union executive recommended on Sunday suspending some 7.5 billion euros in funding for Hungary over corruption, the first such case in the 27-nation bloc under a new sanction meant to better protect the rule of law.

The EU introduced the new financial sanction two years ago precisely in response to what it says amounts to the undermining of democracy in Poland and Hungary, where Prime Minister Viktor Orban subdued courts, media, NGOs and academia, as well as restricting the rights of migrants, gays and women during more than a decade in power.

“It’s about breaches of the rule of law compromising the use and management of EU funds,” said EU Budget Commissioner Johannes Hahn. “We cannot conclude that the EU budget is sufficiently protected.”

He highlighted systemic irregularities in Hungary’s public procurement laws, insufficient safeguards against conflicts of interest, weaknesses in effective prosecution and shortcomings in other anti-graft measures.

Hahn said the Commission was recommending the suspension of about a third of cohesion funds envisaged for Hungary from the bloc’s shared budget for 2021-27 worth a total of 1.1 trillion euros.

The 7.5 billion euros in question amounts to 5% of the country’s estimated 2022 GDP. EU countries now have up to three months to decide on the proposal.

Hahn said Hungary’s latest promise to address EU criticisms was a significant step in the right direction but must still be translated into new laws and practical actions before the bloc would be reassured.

Orban’s government proposed creating a new anti-graft agency in recent weeks as Budapest came under pressure to secure money for the ailing economy and forint, the worst-performing currency in the EU’s east.

Orban, who calls himself a “freedom fighter” against the world view of the liberal West, denies that Hungary – an ex-communist country of some 10 million people – is any more corrupt than others in the EU.

The Commission is already blocking some 6 billion euros in funds envisaged for Hungary in a separate COVID economic recovery stimulus over the same corruption concerns.

Pope Francis launched an overhaul of the Knights of Malta, a global humanitarian group and major Catholic religious order, dissolving its leadership on Saturday. The Pontiff also issued a new constitution of the order and installed a provisional government for it.

The overhaul comes after years of heated debate over the future of the group, officially known as Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta. Established nearly 1,000 years ago in Jerusalem, once a religious military order, it has evolved into a humanitarian group, active worldwide and running such institutions as clinics and refugee camps.

Announcing the overhaul, the Pope praised the “generous contribution of Members and Volunteers,” of the order, which brings together nearly 100,000 volunteers and more than 50,000 medical staff worldwide. At the same time, he acknowledged the need to “begin a profound spiritual, moral and institutional renewal of the entire Order.”

Democratization of the order is among the main changes for the institution, with the new constitution eliminating the rule for the Grand Master and the top Knights requiring a noble background. The rule had effectively barred any non-Europeans from ever reaching the top ranks in the order.

“It will be more democratic. The question of nobility has now become secondary,” the Pope’s special delegate to the order, Cardinal Silvano Tomasi, told reporters at a press briefing. “We hope this will re-establish unity in the order and increase its ability to serve the poor and the sick,” he added.

Japan pledged $30 billion in aid for development in Africa on Saturday, saying it wants to work more closely with the continent, with the rules-based international order under threat after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Addressing a Japan-Africa summit in Tunisia, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said Tokyo would work to ensure grain shipments to Africa amid a global shortage.

“If we give up on a rules-based society and permit unilateral changes of the status quo by force, the impact of that will extend not only through Africa, but all the world,” Kishida said by videolink after testing positive for COVID-19.

 Kishida said the $30 billion would be delivered over three years, promising smaller sums for food security in coordination with the African Development Bank.

Tunisia’s state news agency cited Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi as saying Japan was granting Tunisia $100 million to help mitigate the impact of the pandemic.

The summit has given Tunisian President Kais Saied his biggest international platform since his 2019 election and comes after he seized broad powers, formally enshrined through a constitutional referendum, a move his critics call a coup.

Speaking on Friday at a joint press conference with his Japanese counterpart, Tunisian Foreign Minister Othman Jerandi repeatedly emphasised Tunisia’s commitment to democracy, which has been questioned by Saied’s critics.

Historically, Japan did not do these faggot foreign aid packages.

French President Emmanuel Macron has announced that we have reached the “end of abundance,” because we must make sacrifices to “defend freedom.”

He is of course talking about “freedom” in the Ukraine, where “freedom” means being forcibly conscripted into a war against Russia in defense of the right of NATO to put nuclear weapons on the border of Russia.

In the Ukraine, all opposition parties are banned. Their assets have been seized by the government, and several of the leaders have been put in prison or on house arrest. All opposition media is banned, and people can be arrested and/or tortured for speaking out against the war or the Zelensky government.

People often get taped to posts in the nude and flogged for questioning the government’s actions, or for using Russian words in public.

So when we talk about the French sacrificing for freedom, we are not talking about French freedom. We are talking about Ukraine freedom. And when we talk about Ukraine freedom, we are not talking about the freedom to vote, the freedom to speak your conscience, or the freedom to not be tortured randomly by government thugs. We are specifically and explicitly talking about the freedom for NATO to put nuclear missiles on the border of Russia.

That is the most important freedom of all, and a freedom that the people of France need to be ready to give their lives for.

Those are French values. That is who France is in a democracy.

“Democracy” is a spook.

I am philosophically anti-intellectual, but some of these concepts, you really do just need to understand. I am not a post-Hegelian individualist anarchist, but the Max Stirner spooks meme is useful in basic discourse.

Spooks are useful and necessary abstract concepts needed to structure a human social order. Even the most primitive African tribes have spooks, which is how the Catholic Church ultimately decided that they were human beings with souls and not animals (it was a hot topic of debate).

The ability to rationally build abstract thought forms outside of the concrete world is what separates humans from animals and what it means when the Bible says that “man is made in the image of God.” Spooks are a framework through which to shape and improve physical reality.

Here’s the problem with democracy: it is too spooky to be a functional spook. It is a busted spook. It has been abstracted from an abstraction so many times that no one has any idea what it means. For contrast, “freedom” also has structural problems as an abstract, but at least people have some basic agreement that it means “options for individuals.” People disagree with which options people should have, but the basic idea of “the ability to exercise agency” is understood.

“Democracy” means literally anything to anyone. On one end, it means “universal suffrage rights” and on the other end it means “gay sex lessons for kids.” This is always getting mixed up, on purpose, so you get situations where the media and government claim that democracy is about “maximizing voting rights” and then turn around and claim people are “voting against democracy.” If democracy is popular vote, then it is actually impossible to “vote against democracy.”

The bottom line is: no one is willing to offer a definition of this term. At least no one on the left is willing to do so. They prefer to keep it as a nebulous blob of compounded and conflicting abstractions.

What’s more: America was never intended to be a “democracy.” We didn’t have universal suffrage until the late 19th century. Women did not get national universal suffrage rights until 1920 (though that is a separate issue, technically).

Democracy in its most “official” form is outlined by the United Nations in their Universal Declaration of Human Rights, almost none of which are currently associated with the term as it is commonly used by the left. I am against all forms of democracy, as it is always an oligarchy, which always reduces personal freedom. Even in its pure form, the masses will vote away other people’s right and vote away their own rights because the masses are stupid cattle.

But if we talk about “democracy going away” – that means different things to different people. Republicans now try to push the original definitions of democracy, but also say that importing new voters is a violation of democracy. Democrats literally mean that restrictions on abortion and child gay sex, if they were voted for, would destroy democracy.

What that means is that if one side gets their ideal of democracy, the other side loses it. So people’s opinions here are completely irrelevant in any real sense, and the fact that most people in both parties now believe democracy is ending just means that no one is comfortable with the current direction of society.

More than half of self-identified Democrats and Republicans believe the US will no longer be a “democracy” at some point in the future, according to a new poll.

The striking findings were reported in a Yahoo News/YouGov survey which found 55% of Democrats and 53% of Republicans said it was “likely” the US will “cease to be a democracy in the future.”

It was unclear how the poll defined “democracy.” The US is officially a constitutional federal republic where states run direct elections for most high offices — though not, most notably, for president.

When independents and the non-affiliated were factored in, the depressing notion was shared by 49% of all respondents — while only 25% said they consider the end of democracy to be “unlikely,” while another 25% said they were unsure.

In addition, 60% of Democrats and 61% of Republicans believe America is becoming a “less democratic country.”

Both political sides also believe they were treated more fairly “in the past” than now – 71% of Republicans and 50% of Democrats agreed with that statement.

Additionally, the poll found that 52% of Republicans, 50% of independents and 46% of Democrats believe “there will be a civil war in the United States in [their] lifetime.”

While there appears to be bipartisan hopelessness for the future of America, respondents were quick to blame the other side for the present predicament.

A plurality of Republicans — 30% — described Democrats as “out of touch with reality,” while 25% claimed they were a “threat to America.” Another 8% see the Democratic Party as “immoral” and 4% said it was a “threat to me personally.”

Democrats’ opinions of the GOP were similar, with 27% calling the Republican Party “out of touch with reality,” 23% saying they are a “threat to America,” 7% claiming the GOP is “immoral” and 4% calling it a “threat to me personally.”

I don’t know how only 4% consider the opposite party a threat to them personally. I view both parties as a threat to me personally.

But this split ultimately can be reduced to the exact same boring, obvious point:

  • The right believes reality is what it is, and you have to deal with it, and
  • The left believes man can be perfected and a utopia can be created on earth

The right, typically, wants to be left alone to figure out their lives for themselves, while the left believes that a collective utopian mission is necessary for society. That ultimately comes back to a metaphysical question: does man have a personal relationship to the divine? If so, he should be left alone to figure it out. If not, then the individual is a blob of cells irrelevant to the greater utopian project.

Of course: it is only a fraction of a fraction of the population that understands this dichotomy, and most are going on instinct. The core instincts surround two distinct spooks that have actual clear meaning:

  • Left: desire for hedonistic pleasures to maximize “happiness”
  • Right: belief in order to maximize “personal autonomy”

Simply: the left is feminine, the right is masculine.

  • Women and men with feminine spirits do not have any conception of higher purpose, so the only thing they can think about is physical pleasures – their brains releasing happiness chemicals.
  • Men with higher ideals understand that life is suffering, and the only way to live a meaningful life is to confront challenges and overcome them. To confront and overcome challenges, you have to be left alone, and free to confront dangers on your own terms.

Those remain the core drivers behind popular sentiments.

However, a secondary issue changes all of this in the political realm: the Republican Party isn’t really “right-wing” – at all.

You see this in the gun control debate:

  • The Democrats want to ban guns to stop shootings
  • The Republicans want to do background checks and militarize schools, further expand and militarize the police, and basically turn society into a gigantic prison in order to stop shootings while allowing people the “right” to own a gun

On its face, the Republican plan actually appears to reduce your freedoms more than the Democrat plan. The Ted Cruz bill to expand NICS, for example, doesn’t simply violate the Second Amendment, but also the Fourth and Fifth Amendments. The same is true of “red flag laws,” which many Republicans are supporting.

The actual right-wing position is:

“The world is not perfect and sometimes people get shot.”

Clearly, you should try to reduce deaths through reasonable means, but the left is saying “if it saves one life,” which is a utopianist slogan. The logical end to utopian thinking is to put everyone in a very safe pod with a wire going into their brain to regulate the chemicals in their brain to keep them in a constant state of happiness.

The two worldviews are completely incompatible with one another. The right wants to be left alone and the left wants to control everyone.

“Democracy” is completely irrelevant to all of this. It is a busted spook. Anyone talking about democracy – including Tucker Carlson, by the way – is simply confusing the core issues.

If everyone understood the differences between right and left, we would be much closer to figuring this out – and the logical thing to do would be to split the country. Instead, everyone thinks there is going to be a civil war, because they understand there are irreconcilable differences, but they do not have the language to explicate these differences, and instead just keep on babbling about “democracy.”

The pictures are appalling, the words terrifying. If Thursday’s opening session is anything to go by, the primetime televised hearings into the storming of Capitol Hill on 6 January 2021 will be both revealing and disturbing. But though their focus is on a winter’s day 18 months ago, they are not about America’s past. They are a warning about its future.

But here’s why these current hearings should be regarded less as a past judgment than a future warning. On 6 January, the determination of the pro-Trump forces to subvert a democratic election was not in doubt. They failed only because enough restraints were in place to thwart them, whether it was state-level election officials determined to count the votes, and count them fairly, or a court system that threw out wholly groundless claims of electoral fraud. But 2024 will not be the same as 2020. Because Republicans have been busy.

Methodically and across the US, Republicans have been working to dismantle the guardrails that keep American democracy on track. In 2021 alone, at least 19 Republican-ruled states passed measures whose official purpose was tackling (nonexistent) voter fraud but whose practical effect will be voter suppression, making it harder for low-income and minority Americans in particular to cast a ballot – and those efforts are continuing.

More alarmingly, several Republican state legislatures have sought to put themselves or their allies in charge of what used to be non-partisan election machinery, installing Republicans – including “stop the steal” Trump loyalists – in the offices where votes get counted and certified. Worse, there are moves to make state legislatures the sole authority over elections, cutting out the courts altogether: so the Republicans who dominate, say, the Wisconsin legislature could decide that they and they alone will allocate the state’s electoral votes, regardless of who Wisconsin’s citizens actually voted for. Rerun 2020 in this new, altered environment and states that held firm in 2020, giving Biden the victory he had legitimately won, could hand power in 2024 to the loser.

The key shift here is in the Republican party itself. On Thursday night, Liz Cheney, vice-chair of the House committee investigating 6 January, did an admirable job, telling her fellow Republicans that when Trump is gone their “dishonour will remain”. But she is an outlier, isolated and ostracised from her party.

Next week sees the 50th anniversary of the Watergate break-in. But if that event were to happen now, it would play out very differently. The rightwing media would not even cover it, just as Fox did not cover Thursday’s hearing. It’s inconceivable that Senate Republicans would turn on a Republican president the way their predecessors turned on Richard Nixon, driving him from office. We can know that, because they did not turn on Trump.

Nearly a decade ago, the scholar David Runciman wrote a book called The Confidence Trap. It argued that the problem with democracy is that each time it survives a crisis, people wrongly assume that it’s indestructible. We’re confident that democracy can survive anything because it survived the last thing. In today’s America, that confidence now looks badly misplaced. The US only narrowly survived Trump on 6 January 2021 – and the defences that kept the peril at bay are steadily getting weaker.

What even is this?

The practice harks back to the 2014 conflict when Russia invaded then annexed the Crimean Peninsula from Ukraine, “when lots of people said there are no gay people in the army,” actor, director and drama teacher Zhuhan told Reuters as he and Romanova dressed in their apartment for their second three-month combat rotation.

Zhuhan and Romanova, who identifies as a non-binary person with she/her pronouns and moved to the capital from Crimea after being displaced in 2014, met through their theatre work.

Neither was trained in the use of weapons but, after spending a couple of days hiding in their bathroom at the start of the war, decided they had to do more.

“I just remember that at a certain point it became obvious that we only had three options: either hide in a bomb shelter, run away and escape, or join the Territorial Defence (volunteers). We chose the third option,” Romanova said.

Their first tour of duty around Mykolaiv in southern Ukraine, about 135 km (80 miles) from the port of Odesa, changed their lives. They fought in the same unit and found it terrifying, Zhuhan contracted pneumonia, but, the couple says, their fellow fighters accepted them.

“There was no aggression, no bullying… It was a little unusual for the others. But, over time, people started calling me Antonina, some even used my she pronoun,” Romanova said.

In a Memorial Day speech, Joe Biden condemned democracy, saying that it has never been good.

Is the old man losing faith in our values?

Our values are who we are.

Democracy is the only system that has led to little children having access to gay sex material in the public education system. No other system in history produced this man child trannies.

Not to mention that we’re winning the war in the Ukraine and beat the coronavirus.
