How did scientists not know that orangutans used medicinal herbs?

Or did they just start doing this? Are they getting smarter?

The high intelligence levels of orangutans have long been recognised, partly due to their practical skills such as using tools to retrieve seeds and forage for insects. But new research suggests the primate has another handy skill in its repertoire: applying medicinal herbs.

Researchers say they have observed a male Sumatran orangutan treating an open facial wound with sap and chewed leaves from a plant known to have anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties.

The team describe how, while tracking a male Sumatran orangutan called Rakus, they noticed he had a fresh facial wound – probably the result of a scrap with another male. Three days later, Rakus was seen feeding on the stem and leaves of Fibraurea tinctoria – a type of liana climbing vine.

Then he did something unexpected.

“Thirteen minutes after Rakus had started feeding on the liana, he began chewing the leaves without swallowing them and using his fingers to apply the plant juice from his mouth directly on to his facial wound,” the researchers write.

Not only did Rakus repeat the actions, but shortly afterwards he smeared the entire wound with the chewed leaves until it was fully covered. Five days later the facial wound was closed, while within a few weeks it had healed, leaving only a small scar.

The team say the plant used by Rakus is known to contain substances with antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, antioxidant, pain-killing and anticarcinogenic properties, among other attributes, while this and related liana species are used in traditional medicine “to treat various diseases, such as dysentery, diabetes and malaria”.

That’s amazing.

The mayor of a small Pennsylvania town is resigning after sparking outrage by posting images on his Facebook page comparing President Barack Obama and his family to apes and referencing a noose.

The council of the borough of West York, located about 100 miles (160 km) west of Philadelphia, voted unanimously on Monday to accept Mayor Charles Wasko’s offer to step down, council President Shawn Mauck said.

You can bet he was pressured and black-mailed to do so by all these cucks.

I mean, all he did was make a few innocent little posts, after all.

What’s the big deal? It’s just jokes, bro, relax.

Wasko had resisted calls to step down earlier this month, after he was accused of racism for the images on his page. The West York Borough Council voted 7-0 on Oct. 3 to censure him over the posts.

Mauck said he feared the episode had damaged the community’s economy and that he wanted to repair its reputation.

“We’re going to move forward together to do everything we can to help the community heal,” he said.

Wasko posted an image in June of five orangutans in a wheelbarrow with the caption, “Aww… moving day at the Whitehouse has finally arrived.”

Another image showed actor Clint Eastwood holding a noose in a scene from a Western movie. The image carried the caption, “Barry, this rope is for you. You wanna bring that empty chair over here!” Obama used Barry as a nickname when he was young.

Obama does deserve to be tried for treason. His entire term has been marked by his efforts to dispossess the White majority in favor of hostile foreigners, setting up schemes to ruin America (like Obamacare and Common core), and supporting terrorists both at home (BLM) and abroad (ISIS).

He also not only looks like an ape, but being half Homo Erectus, could be scientifically classified as such.

Charles Wasko did nothing wrong.
