Thousands of people have demonstrated against a convention of the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) as political parties launched their campaigns for the country’s election next month.

A heavy police presence was in place in Riesa – in the eastern state of Saxony, an AfD stronghold – and officers cleared some protesters from the streets. However, the two-day convention started a little more than two hours late as many delegates’ trips to the venue were slowed by blockades.

AfD formally nominated co-leader Alice Weidel as its candidate for chancellor by acclamation. Weidel, who was among those held up, thanked delegates for “defying the left-wing mob and getting here”.

Polls show AfD in second place, with about 20% support, in the run-up to the 23 February elections. However, Weidel, who this week held a live chat on X with the tech billionaire Elon Musk, has no realistic chance of becoming Germany’s leader as other parties refuse to work with AfD.

The conservative opposition Union bloc leads polls on about 30%, and its candidate, Friedrich Merz, is the favourite to become the next chancellor.

Maybe it’s not that much different than Antifa protesting Trump.

But it was pretty well-established that those Antifa were totally run by the FBI.

Are these German pro-government protests organic?

Public broadcasters are unashamedly taking sides in Germany’s national elections by effectively blocking the second most popular party, the right-wing, anti-immigration Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) from participating in the main TV debate.

The channels ARD and ZDF have decided to only invite Chancellor Olaf Scholz—the Social Democrats’ lead candidate—and opposition leader Friedrich Merz of the centre-right CDU to take part in a live televised debate on February 9th next year. Their reasoning: the CDU/CSU alliance is clearly ahead of all the other parties in opinion polls, and Merz is Scholz’s main rival.

The opposition alliance may be clearly leading in opinion polls (it is currently at 31.5%), but it is not Scholz’s SPD—at 16.5%—but the right-wing AfD that has been consistently in second place for the past one-and-a-half years. It currently has the support of a fifth (19.5%) of the electorate, which should merit a place for its lead candidate, Alice Weidel, in the televised debate. A spokesman for the party said they would sue the broadcasters for failing to take the party seriously.

The party was sidelined in 2021, too, when ARD and ZDF invited Scholz and the lead candidates of the CDU and the Greens to take part in the debate.

The AfD does not have a real chance of entering government, because all the other parties refuse to cooperate with it, but it is not the job of the publicly funded media—which are supposed to be neutral and politically impartial—to decide AfD’s fate.

The right-wing party was not the only one that expressed its furore at being ignored. The Greens, who are a part of the outgoing government, are polling at 11.5% in fourth place, and also demand a place at the debate. ARD and ZDF had originally intended for their lead candidate, Robert Habeck, to debate AfD’s Alice Wiedel in a separate TV programme, but Habeck declined the invitation.

Germany is occupied by the US military.

They are not allowed to have an independent government policy.

The German Parliament has voted to oust Chancellor Olaf Scholz, dissolving the government and setting the stage for a snap election in February.

In a vote of confidence, 394 members of Parliament voted “no” and 207 voted “yes,” with 116 members abstaining.

The outcome is exactly what Scholz expected when he announced his intention to hold the confidence vote earlier this month. While his party is likely to take a hit in the upcoming election, the snap elections are seen as an opportunity to regroup and restrategize amid political deadlock.

Scholz, leader of the Social Democratic Party, formed a coalition government in 2021 with the support of the left-leaning Free Democratic Party and Green Party.

Disagreements on economic policy ultimately tore the alliance apart when Scholz fired FDP-aligned Finance Minister Christian Lindner last month for refusing to approve tax increases or additional national debt.

The chancellor met with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Monday following the no-confidence vote to formally request the dissolution of Parliament.

The next elections are expected to take place in late February 2025.

German polling suggests the nation will take a strong step toward the Right in the upcoming election after the failure of the ruling coalition.

The conservative Christian Democratic Union and its Bavarian counterpart, the Christian Social Union, are polling highest, followed by the hard-right Alternative for Germany.

If AfD does take power, they need to call for the masses to constantly be out in the streets supporting them and fighting their enemies.

But… in all likelihood, any AfD government would be sabotaged from within before it had time to be sabotaged from without.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke by phone on Friday, their first direct contact in almost two years, the Kremlin has confirmed, saying that the Ukraine crisis was the primary topic of the conversation.

According to the Kremlin statement, Putin and Scholz last spoke directly in December 2022. During Friday’s call, which Moscow said was initiated by the German side, the two leaders held a “detailed and frank exchange of views on the situation in Ukraine.”

Putin told Scholz that the current crisis was “a direct result of NATO’s long-standing aggressive policy aimed at creating an anti-Russian bridgehead on Ukrainian territory, while ignoring our country’s interests in the field of security and trampling on the rights of Russian-speaking residents,” the Kremlin said.

Discussing the prospects for a political and diplomatic resolution to the conflict, the Russian president said Moscow has never refused to hold peace negotiations with Kiev and remains open to relaunching talks, which had previously been shut down by the Ukrainian side.

Putin noted, however, that any potential settlements between Moscow and Kiev should take into account Russia’s interests in the sphere of security, as well as the new territorial realities, and “eliminate the root causes of the conflict.”

Naturalizations in Berlin have surged dramatically in 2024, more than tripling compared to last year, driven by the liberalization of German naturalization laws.

In the first eight months of this year, 28,716 foreign nationals in the city applied for German citizenship. This sharp rise is linked to a nationwide reform of the citizenship law, which now allows naturalization after just five years of residence in Germany, instead of the previous eight. In some cases, foreigners can apply after just three years.

In 2023, there were 18,018 applications across Berlin’s local authority although only 9,041 naturalizations were carried out.

The new law has also led to a plunge in rejection rates. So far this year, only 17 applications have been rejected in the German capital, a significant drop from the 229 rejections recorded last year.

Unlike last year when the origins of applicants were recorded, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party that requested the 2024 data was advised that this information was not statistically recorded for this year, according to the Berliner Zeitung.

Of the 9,041 naturalization last year, the most common country of origin for applicants was Syria (2,468) followed by Turkey (618) and Iran (353). Just 2,820 applications came from EU nationals.

Nine thousand people is obviously a small fraction of the number of invaders in Germany, but this signals the willingness of the government to move to turn all of these parasites into “Germans.”

As German newspaper Welt notes: “The number of job advertisements is plummeting, short-time work is making a comeback: Germany’s job market is hit by a crisis that has long been completely overlooked. In several sectors, this is leading to the loss of thousands of jobs — and permanently. Political help seems to be coming too late.”

In the productive economy, which includes manufacturing and construction, but also in the trade sector, job losses are increasingly alarming. Since 2018, employment levels have declined, job advertisements have cratered, and many companies say they have no plans to hire. Unemployment is also rising, while industrial production has remained flat.

The recent headlines show the trend line. The auto parts company ZF Friedrichshafen plans to cut 14,000 jobs, BASF 2,500, Bosch 1,200, Miele 1,300 and ThyssenKrupp probably several hundred. All of that pales in comparison to planned job cuts at Volkswagen, which could go up to 30,000. Many smaller construction and manufacturing companies have already laid off workers over the last few years.

At the same time, there were 50,000 employees added to the health sector, another 50,000 in nursing, and 48,000 public sector jobs were added compared to last year. Meanwhile, in the metal and electrical industry, 22,000 fewer people are working, 62,000 fewer in manufacturing, and 27,000 fewer in the construction industry.

Many of these industries are seen as the core of Germany’s wealth and economic power — and also tend to pay higher than other jobs. It is now possible that due to soaring energy prices, regulation, and high taxes, Germany is losing its status as a global industrial superpower.

It’s a shame what happened to Germany.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s centre-left party narrowly won an election in the eastern German state of Brandenburg on Sunday.

Three weeks after the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party made gains in two other eastern German states, the Social Democratic Party (SPD) came out on top.

According to final results published Sunday evening by the state electoral administration, the SPD won 30.9% of the votes while the AfD came a close second with 29.2%.

The Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW), a new leftist movement, came in third with 13.5%, while the centre-right CDU took 12.1%.

The SPD’s victory brought a reprieve to Scholz, whose three-party governing coalition has fared poorly in elections so far this year.

SPD has governed Brandenburg since 1990, and a loss there would have been a significant setback for Scholz, who has his constituency in the state capital of Potsdam.

The German media was abuzz throughout the weekend about the news that 250,000 Kenyans were headed to Germany to work as skilled or semi-skilled workers. Now, there are panic denials coming from the government, with the interior ministry contradicting the claims. Kenyan President William Ruto was the one who first broke the news, telling Deutsche Welle that he had signed an agreement with Germany that would allow Germany to return illegal immigrants, and in exchange, Kenya would send skilled labor as migrants.

Germany doesn’t have to make a deal to return illegal immigrants to Kenya.

Germany is a powerful country, and they have the ability to simply tell Kenya they will be returning their immigrants.

Despite the denial, the news could further harm the government’s standing in the run-up to regional elections.

Since then, the figure of 250,000 has been deleted from the Deutsche Welle X channel, in what looks like an attempt at damage control. However, the figure is still available on their website.

The Kenyan government has not responded to the German government’s denial that 250,000 Kenyan migrants would be headed to Germany.

Germany deported Afghan nationals to their homeland on Friday for the first time since August 2021, when the Taliban returned to power.

Julia Duchrow, secretary general of Amnesty International in Germany, blasted the Afghans’ deportations in a statement Friday, saying the government bowed to political pressure during an election campaign. She added that Afghanistan is not safe and alleged that the deportations violate international law.
