Among other incredible things, it is incredible that in a couple short years, the Confederate flag has become to be representative of a pro-slavery position.

Police have stepped in after a complaint over a “pro-slavery” Confederate flag being flown in a Norwich garden.

“Words of advice” have been given to the residents at the city centre home, who for years have made a tradition of flying a different world flag, with notices to inform passers-by of what they are.

However, this hobby resulted in an unlikely police call-out this week, when they chose to fly the Confederate flag, an American Civil War flag mired in controversy due to its association with the slave trade.

The notice stated that the flag would be flown on Monday and Tuesday to mark the death of General Thomas ‘Stonewall’ Jackson in 1863.

It was reported to police as a hate crime by 34-year-old teacher Emily Robinson, who spotted it while passing by with her artist partner.

She said: “The Confederate flag is the flag used by southern states in the American Civil War who were fighting for the right to keep black slaves. It directly represents support for slavery.

“The General they are commemorating was fighting in favour of slavery.”

Ms Robinson, who recently moved back to Norwich from Brighton, added: “To me, this is a great opportunity to educate people on how damaging this is to many people who are a minority in our lovely city – as I know many people may not have any reason to know why it is such a big deal.

“I believe it is our responsibility, as white people in this country, to stand up to racism.”

The 45-year-old man whose Norwich murder conviction was overturned last year has until next month to decide whether to accept a plea offer or move forward with a new trial.

Sebastian DeSantis, the lawyer for Jean Jacques, accused in the 2015 slaying of 25-year-old Casey Chadwick, said in New London Superior Court on Thursday that he had conveyed a publically undisclosed offer to his client and asked for a continuance to allow Jacques to mull over the proposed deal.

DeSantis said he expects Jacques to reject the offer on Feb. 6 setting the stage for a new trial.

Jurors in 2016 found Jacques guilty of Chadwick’s murder and Judge Barbara Jongbloed sentenced him to the maximum penalty of 60 years in prison.

In July, however, the state Supreme Court unanimously ruled that Jacques deserved a new trial because a search by Norwich police violated his constitutional rights.

The state’s highest court ruled that Norwich police needed to get a search warrant before they searched his home a month after the June 25, 2015, killing.

This was no accident.

This was done out of virulent hatred for the color of the epidermis, and wishing death upon the worker’s unborn infant was a fully justified response to it.

A furious customer stormed into a McDonald’s restaurant, slapped a pregnant worker in the face and said she hoped she’d lose her baby after she was dissatisfied with her McChicken sandwich drive-thru order.

Shannelle Hanson, 21, purchased the sandwich around 7.45pm on Friday at Norwich, Connecticut McDonald’s drive-thru but became angry because ‘there was nothing on’ her McChicken, which typically comes with mayonnaise and lettuce.

In her rage she entered the restaurant, walked behind the counter and attacked the restaurant manager, who was 29 weeks pregnant, allegedly saying she hoped she lost her child and didn’t care about fighting her as she had ‘bail money’.

The manager was sent to the hospital in the incident for broken and bleeding nails.

She was arrested and charged with breach of peace and third-degree assault of a pregnant woman. She’s scheduled to be arraigned on June 13 in Norwich Superior Court, according to The Smoking Gun.

A witness at the restaurant said she busted through the doors complaining that ‘her food was made wrong’.

She then requested a refund and stated ‘aren’t you going to make my food?’, according to the Norwich Police Department.

An employee then told her that she was not getting her food because she was getting a refund instead. In a huff she said she’d make the food herself and went behind the counter and headed towards the manager at the fry machine.

Staff warned Hanson that the manager was pregnant but Hanson continued to charge towards her.

Hanson then got in the manager’s face and slapped her, trying to provoke a fight, according to the police report. Other staff then intervened to tear them apart. Hanson was punched by an employee in the process.

Hanson allegedly said to the manager ‘What are you going to do?’ in the confrontation.

Once separated Hanson allegedly said that ‘she had bail money and didn’t care that she was pregnant. She hoped I lost my child’, the manger said in a written statement to police. She added she doesn’t know who threw the first punch.

When cops arrived to the scene the pregnant manager said she wasn’t feeling well and was slapped in the face and pushed by Hanson.

She was transported to the Wiliam W. Backus Hospital for an examination and was found with several of her nails broken and one bleeding. She said they broke in her brawl with Hanson, according to the police report.

Cops were called to the scene and Hanson was arrested. She was released on $5,000 bond.

Police arrested a man Wednesday for brutally murdering a woman right in front of her children in a 2011 Norwich cold case.

On December 14, 2011, Jaclyn Wirth was killed at her home at 6D East Baltic Street. After an extensive investigation, and help from the New London County Cold Case Unit, police arrested 33-year-old Lashawn R. Cecil. The Norwich man is charged with felony murder, criminal possession of a firearm, and criminal attempt burglary. He’s being held on a $2,000,000 bond.

As Cecil was walked out of the Norwich Police Department, escorted by the officers and detectives who arrested him, we asked if he had anything to say.

“Not guilty,” said Cecil.

Police say Cecil man shot the 26-year-old right through her apartment door. Officer Scott DuPointe was the first to arrive at the scene.

“You can’t prepare for an incident like this,” said DuPointe. “I mean, the lady was wounded. I mean, I was the last person to speak to her before she had passed away. So it’s something that’s going to stick with me for the rest of my life.”

Wirth’s seven-year-old son Sergio called 911 that night. He is now 10 and his younger brother, Kymani, is now five. Their mom’s aunt, Peggy Lufkin, is raising them. She says they are resilient.

“They can rest in peace a little bit more tonight and not worry that someone is coming after them,” said Lufkin through tears.

This case became personal for all officers and investigators, who are still working this cold case.

A teenage gang is being hunted by police after beating up a disabled grandmother and then urinating on her in the street.

Denise Bright, 58, who walks with the aid of a stick, was attacked as she walked home alone from her local shops in Norwich.

The grandmother-of-eight cowered on the ground as she was repeatedly kicked in the head, verbally abused and urinated on by the thugs.

She only managed to escape after running into the road and into the arms of a passing motorist.

Today, Mrs Bright said she was ‘too frightened’ to leave the house following the attack, which happened near the junction of Brightwell Road and Catton Grove Road.

‘I don’t know what these lads look like so I can’t keep my eyes open for them,’ she said.

‘I’m so frightened they’re going to come after me. It’s got to the stage where all I want to do is stay indoors.’

Mrs Bright, who had life-saving surgery last Christmas following problems with an artery in her groin, had been walking home at 7.30pm on Saturday, October 19, when the thugs cornered her.
