The duo staged the display that appeared on the Erasmus Bridge just after the start of 2023 to a large crowd of revelers at the site and and those who watched the celebrations broadcast live on RTL 4. The projected slogans included the notorious Fourteen Words coined by the late US white supremacist David Lane, as well as more mundane messages such as “White Lives Matter” and “Happy White 2023.”

This is George Floydism on steroids in current year, when even Starbucks is releasing statements calling Floyd “a worthless criminal nigger who deserved much worse than he got.”

18 days in detention and 80 hours of community service—that’s what a Dutch prosecutor finds to be a reasonable punishment for the young man who a year ago attacked Forum for Democracy (FvD) leader Thierry Baudet with a glass bottle.

The prosecution is asking for 138 days of juvenile detention, of which 120 days conditional, and 80 hours of community service for what text messages, along with the boy’s own statements, led to a charge of premeditated aggravated assault. The case against a second suspect has been dropped due to lack of evidence, Dutch media outlet NOS reports.

A mere two days before the Dutch national elections last fall, Baudet, the leader of the eurosceptic, anti-mass migration party, was speaking at a bar in the northern city of Groningen when the then-15-year-old, pretending to want a selfie with the politician, picked up a bottle and hit Baudet over the head. The Antifa group AFA Noord, present in the bar to protest Baudet’s appearance, initially claimed responsibility but later retracted their statement.

A month prior, Baudet suffered a concussion after being attacked in Ghent by a Ukrainian man who struck him with an umbrella. The situation raised questions about the lack of security for the firebrand politician. That assailant was let go with a warning.

Israeli and Dutch political leaders have condemned violent attacks targeting Israeli football fans overnight, with right-wing politician Geert Wilders describing the incident as a “Jew hunt in the streets of Amsterdam”.

Fans of Israel’s Maccabi Tel Aviv football team who’d travelled to the Netherlands for a match against Ajax Amsterdam were attacked in the streets of the Dutch capital following the conclusion of the game.

Police stated that the supporters left the match without trouble, but that violence occurred once the crowds had dispersed.

Unverified social media footage appears to show crowds of men running through the streets and various people being beaten and intimidated.

Some videos show the football fans forced to say “Free Palestine” in order to avoid attack.

Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof said in a post on X that he was “horrified” by the “antisemitic attacks on Israeli citizens”.

PVV politician Geert Wilders described the incident as a “pogrom” and criticised a lack of police protection following the match.

“A pogrom in the streets of #Amsterdam. We have become the Gaza of Europe. Muslims with Palestinian flags hunting down Jews. I will NOT accept that. NEVER. The authorities will be held accountable for their failure to protect the Israeli citizens. Never again,” Mr Wilders wrote on X.

As a result of the attacks, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered two “rescue planes” to be sent to Amsterdam, while the country’s Foreign Ministry advised its citizens to remain in their hotel rooms.

A lift technician at a museum in the Netherlands mistakenly threw away a piece of artwork made to look like two empty beer cans.

“All the good times we spent together” by French artist Alexandre Lavet may look like it belongs in a trash can at first glance, but closer inspection reveals it is in fact “meticulously hand-painted with acrylics, with each detail painstakingly replicated,” the LAM Museum said in a statement earlier this month.

“For the artist, the cans symbolise cherished memories shared with dear friends,” added the statement from the museum, which is based in the town of Lisse, about 30 kilometers (19 miles) from Amsterdam.

The act of throwing this into the trash has objectively more artistic value than the thing itself

“While evenings spent enjoying drinks may seem trivial in the grand scheme of things, they ultimately embody precious moments of connection.”

Yeah, okay. Everyone agrees with that. But we already have many thousands of pieces of real art that communicates that.

We do not need trash celebrated as art.

It is utterly dehumanizing, like everything else Jews do.

The worker, who the museum said was covering for the regular technician, could perhaps be forgiven their error given the fact that the beer cans were displayed in a glass lift shaft, as though they were left behind by construction workers.

The artwork’s placement was part of the museum’s trademark of displaying pieces in what it calls “unconventional locations.”

“The theme of our collection is food and consumption,” said Sietske van Zanten, the museum’s director, in the October 1 statement, which did not specify exactly when the mishap took place.

“Our art encourages visitors to see everyday objects in a new light. By displaying artworks in unexpected places, we amplify this experience and keep visitors on their toes.”

The museum underlined that it “bears no ill will” towards the technician.

“He was just doing his job in good faith”, said van Zanten. “In a way, it’s a testament to the effectiveness of Alexandre Lavet’s art.”

The cans were later recovered from a trash bag, with both still intact. They were cleaned and then displayed on a traditional plinth at the museum entrance, according to the statement.

“We wanted to give them their moment in the spotlight,” said curator Elisah van den Bergh in the statement, who hasn’t decided where the work will be displayed next.

This is the end of the line for Western civilization.

Why does stuff like this never get mistaken for garbage?

Even when she was searching online for a sperm donor, Vanessa wanted her children to know their father. In 2015, she was 34, the right partner hadn’t come along and fertility treatment “would have bankrupted me”, she says.

A website listing dozens of Dutchmen willing to donate privately seemed to answer her prayers. Though no photographs were posted, Vanessa was drawn to one profile in particular. The man – Jonathan – wrote that he’d been inspired to sign up after friends of his had struggled to conceive. “I thought: ‘That’s nice – he wants to help’,” says Vanessa.

Most important, for her, was that he was open to a relationship with his offspring. Under Dutch law, donor-conceived children may only learn their donor’s identity when they turn 16.

“He wanted to be somewhat involved with the kids, to know how they were doing … I really wanted my children to have that.” She laughs without humour. “That’s all gone now – and it won’t ever, ever get better.”

Not long after her daughter was born in 2015, Vanessa’s path to parenthood was blown up by a discovery on Facebook: Jonathan Jacob Meijer was a serial sperm donor, and her daughter had at least 100 half-siblings.

Last year Meijer was ordered by a Dutch court to stop, having been found to have fathered as many as 600 children in the Netherlands since 2007. Some mothers of his offspring – based as far away as Australia – believe the true number globally is closer to 1,100. Moreover, they don’t believe that Meijer has stopped.

The bizarre and unsettling story is the subject of Netflix’s new three-part docuseries, The Man With 1000 Kids. The series unfolds like true crime, each episode revealing yet another level to Meijer’s international operation. But its focus is on the women he deceived, the alliance they forged against him, and the families forced to live with the consequences of his actions.

Executive producer Natalie Hill came to the story in 2020, when Meijer had been investigated by Dutch authorities but not publicly named. Having connected with a group of “resilient, strong, passionate” mothers who had conceived with his sperm, Hill spent two years developing the idea before bringing in director Josh Allott. “It really mattered to me that they knew they could trust me,” she says.

Some decided not to appear on camera, while some interviewees are given pseudonyms. It was a difficult decision for them to go public, says Hill – “but they wanted to try and stop him.”

When we speak via Zoom, weeks from the series’ launch, Vanessa is nervous and fearing judgment. “I’ve been in the media before, but this is a whole new level,” she says as her two children – aged five and seven, both fathered by Meijer – clamour for her attention.

She did her due diligence, Vanessa says. Searching Meijer’s name online, she found his YouTube channel, sharing his passion for music, travel and philosophical musings, but no cause for concern.

Meijer was handsome, with long, strawberry-blond curls. But for Vanessa, looks were less important than shared values and approach to family. “I fell for his profile.”

After messaging for more than a week, they met at Central Station in The Hague – Vanessa’s choice. She’d wanted to be safe, she explains, her tone heavy with irony: “You never know what a man can do.”

They talked for over an hour. “There were no alarm bells whatsoever,” says Vanessa. Meijer seemed “like the guy next door”: easygoing, engaging, polite. She paid him €165 (£140) for his sample and covered his travel costs.

Two years later, when Vanessa was trying to reach Meijer about a second sample, she saw a post on a Facebook group for single mothers in the Netherlands and joined the dots: Meijer had not been honest about the extent of his donation. “I was like, ‘Shit – what the hell did I get into?’”

Meijer had told Vanessa that her child would be his eighth. Not only was this not true, but he had also donated sperm to multiple Dutch fertility clinics – at least 11 by 2023, according to court records – lying to them all about his activities elsewhere.

Vanessa had wanted her children to be full siblings, to grow up with that common link. Having learned that Meijer could not be trusted, “I really struggled with what to do,” she says. Fearing being misled again, she decided to pursue Meijer for a second sample – this time with her eyes open.

Vanessa recalls Meijer’s indifferent response after she confronted him: “Why are you surprised? If I’d been honest with you, would you have chosen me?”

Probably not, Vanessa agreed – but at least she would have had all the facts. “I didn’t have a fair choice. That’s what hurt the most.”

Vanessa cherishes her children, but Meijer’s betrayal upended her life. “My trust in people was gone, pulverised almost beyond repair.”

Cases of people with Parkinson’s disease are exploding worldwide, with a 30% increase in the Netherlands over the past 10 years, a new study based on data contributed by hundreds of doctors has shown.

The research, published in the Lancet medical magazine, shows 11.8 million people now have Parkinson’s compared to 6.2 million only five years before.

The number of Parkinson’s sufferers has doubled over the last 25 years and it is expected to have doubled again by 2040.

In the Netherlands the number of patients has risen by 30% in the last ten years and incidences may be accelerating, Radboud teaching hospital neurologist Bas Bloem told broadcaster NOS.

“In the last four years, the number of diagnoses at five of the hospitals we are working with has risen by 25%,” he told the broadcaster.

Bloem said the new report, which he says may underestimate the number of sufferers, is “poignant”. “Parkinson’s is one of the most cruel things that can happen to people. It affects motor functions, you can’t think clearly, sex, peeing and pooing and sleeping become more difficult,” he said.

In another recent study, Bloem together with an American colleague, explored the link between Parkinson’s and pollution, particularly from the large scale use of pesticides in agriculture.

European research led by Wageningen University showed that 42% of Dutch farmland has excessive levels of nitrogen and phosphates, in addition to widespread contamination with pesticide compounds. Research is also ongoing into a higher incidence of Parkinson’s in the bulb growing areas in the Netherlands.

“I am convinced Parkinson’s is a man-made disease,” Bloem said. The introduction of extremely neurotoxic pesticides such as the now banned Paraquat in the 1970s probably marked the start of what is now an explosion of cases, he said.

Saying Parkinson’s is “man-made” is pretty hardcore.

Israel’s ambassador to the Netherlands was asked to “report” to the Dutch foreign affairs ministry to explain allegations of a secret surveillance and espionage campaign by Israeli spy services against the international criminal court, it has emerged.

Dutch officials asked to meet the ambassador, Modi Ephraim, to discuss concerns raised by a Guardian investigation that revealed Israeli intelligence agencies attempted over a nine-year period to undermine, influence and allegedly intimidate the ICC chief prosecutor’s office.

The meeting was disclosed by officials in response to questions raised in parliament by several Dutch MPs about the revelations, part of a joint investigation with the Israeli-Palestinian publication +972 Magazine and the Hebrew-language outlet Local Call.

On Tuesday, a spokesperson for the minister of foreign affairs said the Israeli ambassador “was requested to report at the [ministry] in connection with allegations made in the articles in the Guardian and +972”. They said a conversation was held “in which the concerns of the Netherlands have been expressed”.

The spokesperson declined to discuss details, citing the confidentiality of diplomatic conversations. Israel’s embassy in the Netherlands did not respond to a request for comment.

As the host state of the ICC, which is in The Hague, the Netherlands is obliged under an agreement with the court to protect the safety and security of ICC staff, and must ensure it is “free from interference of any kind”.

There is a difference between denying the authority of an international body and running a 9-year espionage campaign against it.

I guess the Mossad’s best explanation here would be “we run espionage campaigns against everyone.”

Hundreds of unaccompanied child migrants across Europe are being forced to work as soldiers for increasingly powerful drug cartels to meet the continent’s soaring appetite for cocaine, a Guardian investigation has found.

EU police forces have warned of industrial-scale exploitation of African children by cocaine networks operating in western Europe in cities including Paris and Brussels as they seek to expand Europe’s £10bn cocaine market.

Child protection agencies warned that cocaine gangs, which are exploiting the “unlimited” supply of vulnerable African children at their disposal, are using brutal means to control their victims, including torture and rape if they fail to sell enough drugs.

This whole report is a bit racist, no?

Sources told the Guardian that London may be next after police recently found a number of Moroccan and Algerian children, seemingly victims of torture, who they believe were trafficked into the country by cocaine gangs.

Concern over the level of exploitation was so great that in March, EU police forces – along with UK and UN agencies and Europol – met to discuss how to tackle the exploitation and trafficking of African children by drugs networks based in western Europe.

A separate recent assessment by EU police forces investigating serious organised crime and human trafficking concluded: “Sweden, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain and France presented several concrete cases of the exploitation of hundreds of north African minors, recruited by drug trafficking networks to sell narcotics.”

Eric Garbar, head of human trafficking and smuggling at the Belgian federal judicial police, is one of the officers leading attempts to tackle the exploitation of unaccompanied children by criminal networks. He said: “With African minors, essentially Moroccan and Algerian, the most important area is the exploitation by OCGs [organised crime groups] involved in criminal activities such as drug trafficking.

“What we have in the EU is an unstoppable low-cost human resource from Africa.”
