The Irish minister for children, disability, equality, and integration has said he supports proposals to make it easier for children in Ireland under the age of 16 to “change their gender,” after the government confirmed that it will introduce such laws for 16- and 17-year-olds.

The Irish government, which is currently a coalition between Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael, and the Green Party, released its Programme for Government last month, which pledged to “[r]emove the need for a person aged 16 and 17 years to have two specialist reports before they can apply for legal gender recognition.”

The Programme for Government document, entitled “Our Shared Future,” also promises to “deliver a framework for the development of National Gender Clinics and Multidisciplinary Teams for children and adults” and to “examine arrangements for children under 16.”

Roderic O’Gorman, the new minister for children, disability, equality, and integration, said earlier this week that experts had proposed making it easier for children under 16 to “change gender.”

“Right now, if they want to initiate a gender change, they have to get kind of high-level medical consultants to actually sign off on that. Whereas the recommendation is to make that easier to allow a GP basically to sign off to say yes,” O’Gorman said.

“In an area like this, you should be led by expert advice,” he added.

Irish journalist John McGuirk has pointed out that the so-called “expert advice” which O’Gorman referred to actually came from a review group made up of a number of trans activists.

“There was one Doctor on the review group — and she is a doctor of law, not a doctor of medicine. The review group did contain, however, four representatives from NGOs that advocate for trans rights,” McGuirk writes.

“How can this be said to be ‘expert advice’? It is only expert if one is seeking experts in trans rights activism, and not expertise in children’s medicine or psychology,” he continues.

“This review panel did not contain one single psychologist, one single gender specialist, or one single GP. There’s a lone nurse on it, but with respect to nurses, they’re not qualified in gender issues in children.”

O’Gorman has been the focus of scrutiny on social media in the past week after a picture of him emerged at a 2018 Dublin “Pride” parade with prominent U.K. LGBT activist Peter Tatchell.

A number of journalists and social media users wanted the new children’s minister to state publicly that he condemns pedophila in light of Tatchell’s 1997 letter to The Guardian in which he said “not all sex involving children is unwanted, abusive and harmful.”

Earlier this week, O’Gorman said the 2018 Dublin “Pride” parade was “the first and only time” he has met Tatchell.

“I had no idea about the letter. Had I read it straight before the march I probably would have re-considered [taking a photo with him]. I absolutely don’t share his views on those points,” he said in a statement on Monday.

Children as young as three could be helped to change gender by doctors on the basis of just a Skype phone call under plans being considered by the NHS.

A controversial clinic, which helps thousands of children to change gender every year, says that it has become so overwhelmed by patients that it could be forced to set children on a path to a new sex on the basis of ‘telemedical’ appointments.

The startling development is likely to cause an outcry among critics of the clinic’s work, who will argue that it is impossible to evaluate a child’s suitability for such radical treatment over the phone.

Ten of the children were aged three or four and dozens more were of primary-school age. The treatment includes giving the children hormone-blocking drugs.

The GIDS reports, which have been seen by this newspaper, reveal that the clinic has started testing ‘some of the practicalities involved in identifying young people and families to be considered for treatment appointments delivered with telemedicine’.

It uses technology such as Skype and FaceTime to allow doctors to diagnose and prescribe treatment for patients hundreds or thousands of miles away.

The reports, which were presented to the directors last month, reveal that publicity about the clinic’s work has led to a surge in demand for its services and an increase in waiting times, leading to a growing burden on staff.

Britain’s major health organization is now asking pre-teens in schools across England to take a survey asking whether they feel comfortable with their biological identity.

“Do you feel the same inside as the gender you were born with?” the survey asks, according to Express News. The survey also asks the students to check a box indicating what their “true” gender is. The options include “boy,” “girl” and “other.”

Britain’s National Health Service (NHS) used a foundation trust to send the survey to schools across northwest England. “At a time when children are growing up and having to deal with all sorts of challenges of the modern world, now they are being asked to confront their gender,” Tim Loughton, the former Conservative children’s minister, told The Telegraph.

Young school children will likely become unsettled by the questionnaire because they are just beginning to navigate the intricacies of the teenage years, and presenting them with the problematic survey might have poor consequences, he claims.

“Clearly we need to be sensitive about the issue of gender and sexual orientation but forcing children to question whether they are the right gender so early on can be deeply destabilising,” Loughton said.

The entire Fort Lauderdale police department may have to undergo special training after a police officer used the wrong pronouns with a transgender citizen.

The city’s Citizens Police Review Board made the suggestion Monday, after Officer James Brinton referred to Shelby Kendall, a transgender woman, as a male during a January traffic stop, reports the Sun-Sentinel.

Brinton pulled over Kendall, a man who identifies as a woman, for reckless driving Jan. 28 because Kendall was drag racing a black Chevrolet Camaro against another car on a public road. Brinton gave Kendall a reckless driving ticket, but referred to Kendall as a male even though his driver’s license listed Kendall’s gender as “female. ”

Officers need training for stuff that helps them on the job. This doesn’t help them, it only makes them angry, which is a good thing I guess.

Kendall filed a complaint against Brinton, saying he refused to change the gender on the ticket despite being asked to.

“If I’ve done everything I need to do for the state of Florida to recognize me as a female, he doesn’t have a right to purposely mis-gender me,” Kendall said about the incident.
