Two Washington parents are facing criminal charges, including attempted kidnapping, assault, and attempted murder, during what is being called an attempted “honor killing” of their daughter outside a high school.

According to court documents, on October 18 outside of Timberline High School in Lacey, Washington, the girl’s parents, Ihsan and Zahraa Ali, were both arrested after the 17-year-old victim told law enforcement that her father had been threatening to kill her in an “honor killing” after she refused to go to another country for an arranged marriage to an older man.

Can you imagine calling the cops on your own father?

The daughter, who was not identified, went to school for help and witnesses saw the father had his daughter in a chokehold. Bystanders stepped in to break up the fight which they thought was among teenagers and realized it was the girl’s father Ihsan Ali choking his 17-year-old daughter “to the point where she had lost consciousness.”

The girl told police the father was saying as he was choking her, “It’s not right … you are not supposed to do this,” before she blacked out.

He is actually supposed to do that. That’s the number one thing a father is supposed to do.

Bystanders, other students, and the girl’s boyfriend attempted to pull her away. The girl’s mother, Zahraa Ali, was also choking the daughter and the girl’s father punched the boyfriend in the face.

A witness, Josh Wagner, told KOMO News he stepped in to break up what he thought was a fight between teens and saw the dad holding his daughter in a chokehold. Wagner said he was able to get the girl loose and hold the father down until police arrived.

Once free, the girl ran into the school screaming, “My dad was trying to kill me, he was trying to kill me,” which triggered a lockdown and stopped the parents from being able to get to their daughter again.

North Thurston Public Schools said in a statement, “We work with families, staff, and law enforcement partners to maintain safety and security on our campuses, and we take student and staff safety extremely seriously. When unique situations arise, we work with concerned parties to provide a safe learning environment, and we are doing so in this case.”

The prime ministers of India and Canada condemned violence that broke out on Sunday at a Hindu temple near Toronto at a time of escalating diplomatic tensions between the countries.

Videos posted on social media appeared to show people hitting each other with flagpoles and throwing punches in the Toronto suburb of Brampton. It was unclear who instigated the violence and Reuters could not independently verify what happened.

The incident happened weeks after Ottawa expelled six Indian diplomats, linking them to the killing of a Sikh separatist leader in 2023 in Canada. Canada has accused the Indian government of conducting a broad campaign against South Asian dissidents in Canada, which New Delhi denies.

Police said there were demonstrations at multiple locations in the region. Sikh activists said one demonstration was at a Hindu temple where pro-Khalistan activists protested the presence of Indian diplomats and another was at a Sikh temple.

Khalistan refers to a Sikh homeland activists want carved out of India’s Punjab state.

The local Peel Police said three men faced criminal charges over Sunday’s protest. A 43-year-old man is charged with causing a disturbance and assaulting a peace officer, a 23-year-old man is charged with assault with a weapon and a 31-year-old man is charged with mischief.

Police said they are aware of video of an off-duty police officer participating in a demonstration. The officer has been suspended, they said. Police are investigating.

The North America-based activist group Sikhs for Justice said on Sunday that “pro-Khalistan Sikhs who were peacefully demonstrating … were violently attacked by a group of Indo Canadians.”

Indian media reported that an Indian consular camp at the venue was targeted in the violence.

The foreign ministry in New Delhi said the violence was perpetrated by “extremists and separatists.”

This story was overshadowed by the US election in right-wing media, but these people are really rioting seriously.

Two nights of disturbances have shaken outskirts of the Portuguese capital Lisbon following the fatal police shooting of a Black man, with buses and rubbish set ablaze and stones hurled, according to authorities and TV images.

The unrest began in a multicultural neighbourhood of Lisbon’s Amadora suburb after a 43-year-old man was shot dead by police in the early hours of Monday.

Media said about 30 people took to the streets on Monday night. It was unclear how many came out on the second night.

Three people have been detained, with two policemen and two others injured, authorities said. Riot police were deployed and firefighters put out a blaze.

According to a police statement, the shooting victim had fled and crashed a car after seeing a police vehicle. When officers approached, he tried to attack them with a blade, before being shot and dying in hospital, the statement added.

It’s unclear how much the American culture of outrage is influencing these migrant rioters in Europe.

It’s easy to say “oh of course they riot,” but I think it’s more “of course they are violent.” A race riot is a rather specific form of violence, and it usually only makes sense if you’re the majority.

Furthermore, unless the man was some kind of cultural hero, most blacks/browns will not feel particularly outraged by the killing of someone who actually attacked the cops. You notice that with the George Floyd thing, they refused to release the tape and came up with a completely fake story about the death, then hyped everything up beyond belief. Sweden’s rising crime rate: A riddle no one can solve

What has caused the placid Swedes to become so unhinged that they are throwing grenades at one another?

A couple short decades ago, Sweden was like Japan: a country where the worst threat to your life is being overwhelmed with boredom.

Is this shocking rise in crime a result of violent video games? Is it something in the water?

No one knows. The only thing we know is that it can never be investigated, because that would be racist.

That was last year. I haven’t seen the numbers, but it’s possible that Sweden could have won this year’s explosion contest.

Images from the scene showed vehicles in flames and dozens of men in the street, some throwing rocks.

“It got seriously out of hand,” The Hague Municipality spokesman Robin Middel said.

Middel said a group loyal to Eritrea’s government was holding a meeting when the venue was attacked by Eritreans who oppose the African nation’s government.

Police spokeswoman Kristianne van Blanken said she could not immediately say if anybody was injured or if any rioters were arrested.

This is really hardly even a news item.

Milan’s players eventually returned to secure a 3-2 victory in added time but Infantino said there should be harsher punishments. “As well as the three-step process (match stopped, match re-stopped, match abandoned), we have to implement an automatic forfeit for the team whose fans have committed racism and caused the match to be abandoned, as well as worldwide stadium bans and criminal charges for racists,” he said in a Fifa post on X.

More than 10 children on average have lost one or both of their legs every day in Gaza since October 7, with many amputations performed without anesthesia, a charity said Sunday, underscoring the dire humanitarian situation in the Palestinian enclave following more than three months of Israeli bombardment.

In a statement citing United Nations statistics, Save the Children’s director for the occupied Palestinian territory, Jason Lee, said the “suffering of children in this conflict is unimaginable and even more so because it is unnecessary and completely avoidable.”

“The killing and maiming of children is condemned as a grave violation against children, and perpetrators must be held to account,” he said.

Save the Children referenced remarks from UNICEF spokesperson James Elder, who after returning from Gaza, said on December 19 that around 1,000 children had lost one or both of their legs since October 7, when Hamas launched its attack on Israel and war broke out.

The charity also cited a World Health Organization statement in which the agency said many of these operations on children were conducted without anesthesia, given the severe shortages in medical supplies and basic goods in Gaza.

Lee said he had seen “doctors and nurses completely overwhelmed” when children are brought in with blast wounds.

“The impact of seeing children in that much pain and not having the equipment, medicines to treat them or alleviate pain is too much for even experienced professionals,” he said.

Children are nearly seven times more likely to die from blast injuries than adults as they are more vulnerable and sensitive to injuries, according to the charity.

“Their skulls are still not fully formed, and their undeveloped muscles offer less protection, so a blast is more likely to tear apart organs in their abdomen, even when there’s no visible damage,” Lee said, calling for a “definitive ceasefire” to allow the flow of humanitarian aid and medicines.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has repeatedly said it is not targeting civilians, and that Hamas uses civilian infrastructure, including hospitals, as shields for its attacks on Israel.

At least 22,835 Palestinians have been killed and 58,416 others injured in Gaza since October 7, the Hamas-run Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza said on Sunday.

CNN is not able to independently verify the numbers released by the ministry.

Education Minister Gabriel Attal visited the Jacques-Cartier middle school in Issou, west of Paris, in person on Monday and later said the pupils concerned would be disciplined.

On Thursday, “during a French class, a colleague showed a 17th-century painting that showed naked women”, said Sophie Venetitay, secretary general of the Snes-FSU secondary school teachers’ union.

The painting, “Diana and Actaeon” by the Italian painter Giuseppe Cesari, portrays a Greek mythology story in which the hunter Actaeon bursts in at a site where the goddess Diana and her nymphs are bathing.

The work, which shows a naked Diana and four female companions, is held at the Louvre museum in Paris.

“Some students averted their gaze, felt offended, said they were shocked,” Venetitay said, adding that “some also alleged the teacher made racist comments” during a class discussion.

A pupil’s parent sent an email to the school director saying that his son was prevented from speaking during that discussion and that he would file a complaint, she said.

She said it was the “final straw” for teachers at the school, who had complained of a “very degraded climate” as well as a “lack of support” from management despite “several alerts”.

Attal said that a disciplinary procedure would be launched “against the students who are responsible for this situation and who have also admitted the facts”.

A team would also be deployed to the school to ensure it adhered to the “values of the republic”, he said.

The tensions come after a series of attacks against teachers in recent years.

A woman has been found guilty of handing over a three-year-old British girl for female genital mutilation (FGM) during a trip to Kenya, in the first conviction of its kind.

After a trial at the Old Bailey, Amina Noor, 39, was convicted of assisting a Kenyan woman to carry out the procedure in 2006. The conviction, which carries a maximum sentence of 14 years, is the first for assisting in such harm under the Female Genital Mutilation Act 2003.

The only other successful prosecution under the act was in 2019 when a Ugandan woman from Walthamstow, east London, was jailed for 11 years for cutting a three-year-old girl.

Campaigners said the verdict showed that the introduction in 2015 of mandatory reporting of suspected FGM was working.

The senior crown prosecutor Patricia Strobino hailed Noor’s conviction, saying: “This kind of case will hopefully encourage potential victims and survivors of FGM to come forward, safe in the knowledge that they are supported, believed and also are able to speak their truth about what’s actually happened to them.

“It will also send a clear message to those prospective defendants or people that want to maintain this practice that it doesn’t matter whether they assist or practise or maintain this practice within the UK or overseas, they are likely to be prosecuted.”

Strobino added: “Part of the challenge of this type of offence is the fact that these types of offences occur in secrecy. Within specific communities within the UK, although these offences and practices are prevalent, it is often very difficult to get individuals to come forward to explain the circumstances of what’s happened to them because there was a fear that they may be excluded or pushed away or shunned, isolated from their community.”

Previously, the prosecutor Deanna Heer KC said Noor travelled to Kenya with the girl in 2006 and while there took her to a private house where the child was subjected to FGM.

The crime only came to light years later when the girl was 16 and confided in her English teacher at school.

When spoken to, the defendant said she thought the procedure was just an injection and that afterwards the girl was “happy and able to run around and play”. But when examined in 2019, it emerged that the girl’s clitoris had been removed.

Noor appeared “shocked and upset” and said that was not what she had thought was going to happen, Heer said. According to an initial account, Noor described going with another woman to a “clinic” where the girl was called into a room for a procedure.

Jurors were told the defendant was born in Somalia and moved to Kenya at the age of eight during the civil war in Somalia. She was 16 when she came to the UK and was later granted British citizenship.

The defendant described what had been done to the girl as “Sunnah”, meaning “tradition” or “way” in Arabic, and said it was a practice that had gone on for cultural reasons for many years.

There are all kinds of problems here.

How is she convicted of a British crime committed in a country where the act is illegal? She’s convicted for traveling there?

How is that the law?

The other thing is: “female genital mutilation” is literally the same thing as male circumcision. They cut a pleasure center off the genitals, then claim it’s about hygiene.

Jews are obviously not being prosecuted for doing this to boys, are they?
