Cigarettes have long been associated with fashion so much so that they remain an occasional feature of runways. Smoking, like the color black, seems to never go out of style in the fashion world.

But stylish or not, as of Jan. 1, 2025, smoking is outlawed in “all public spaces, including streets” in Milan, Italy’s financial and fashion capital, meaning anyone who lights up outside faces fines between $41 and $249 (€40 – €240).

The move marks the toughest smoking ban in Italy, where nearly a quarter of the population smokes, according to the country’s health ministry.

The only exception is when people are in isolated places at least 10 meters from other people.

The ban, which does not include vapes or electronic cigarettes, is part of a clampdown focused more on pollution than health, according to the city council, which passed a clean air bill in 2020 that included strict bans on smoking, responsible for 7% of all emissions in Milan and its suburbs.

More than 1,000 people, many of them teenagers, joined a peaceful march in the northern Italian city organised by Fridays For Future, the climate change movement Thunberg helped found.

Wearing a keffiyeh, a traditional scarf symbolising the Palestinian struggle against Israel, Thunberg walked near the front of the procession as other protesters waved flags, held banners and danced to music.

“Palestinians have been living under suffocating oppression for decades by an apartheid regime, and during the last year with Israel’s live broadcasted genocide, the world has once again abandoned Palestine,” the 21-year-old said in a speech.

Thunberg drew a link between global warming and the weapons industry.

“The fight for climate justice is a fight against the fossil fuel industry, just as much as it is a fight against the weapon industries, militarisation and the over-extraction of natural resources,” she said.

It’s about time a hero appeared to take the fight directly to the Jews.

A Milan judge on Thursday found three young men guilty of cat-calling in one of Italy’s first trials regarding comments of a sexually suggestive, threatening or derisive nature directed at someone in public.

The three were all soldiers at the time of the incident in March 2021 in which they targetted a 19-year-old woman with repeated insults, although one has since left the Italian Army.

They were handed suspended one-month jail terms.

Their lawyers said they would appeal.

This doesn’t look like a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but it is.

Criminalizing normal human interactions like this has negative long-term effects on society, not least giving governments an extra excuse to put people they don’t like in prison.

Virtually no woman is actually bothered by this, and most of them actually like it. It’s just a psychosis pushed by the media.

It’s about damn time that The Science weighed in on the issue of immigrants not being criminals.

Italian Interior Minister Luciana Lamorgese has denied that migration had a role during the Milan News Year’s Eve sex attacks, despite several suspects being migrants, while others are second-generation immigrants.

She said: “Those who have used violence are boys, second-generation citizens, Italians even by birth so I would not combine the immigration discourse with violence, which unfortunately also occurs on the part of Italian citizens.”

While several of the suspects involved in the sex attacks that took place in the Piazza del Duomo on New Year’s Eve in Milan are Italians born to migrant parents, others are young migrant men who have only recently come to Italy, Il Giornale reports.

Two suspects were arrested this week in connection to the sexual assault of two German young women in Italy on New Year’s Eve, a 16 and a 17-year-old, both Egyptian nationals. One of the youths is said to be an illegal immigrant, while the other has legal residency in Italy.

The pair are believed to have been involved in sexual violence as well as a number of robberies, with the 16-year-old being accused of stealing the mobile phones from several people.

Italian police in Milan have identified and searched 18 migrant-background youths alleged to have taken part in sex attacks on New Year’s Eve in Milan’s central cathedral square in an incident that has been met with comparisons to the infamous Cologne New Year’s Eve attacks of 2015 which saw over 1,000 women molested.

The youths, aged between 15 and 21 are said to be either foreign-born or to be Italian citizens of North African heritage, are suspected of sexually assaulting as many as nine girls and young women in the Piazza del Duomo on New Year’s Eve.

The operation to identify and search the 18 youths was undertaken by both the Milan and Turin police and of the 18, twelve are being actively investigated for group sexual violence, robbery and aggravated assault, Il Giornale reports. Britain’s Guardian reports police raided the homes of 15 individuals.

According to the newspaper, investigators were able to identify the youths through witness testimony and from videos of the attacks that had been posted on social media.

One of the victims, a German student, spoke out about the attacks on New Year’s Eve saying, “I hope they find them and that justice is done for us and for all the other girls who were molested that evening.”

“When I fell to the ground it was all so fast, I thought ‘my God they are going to rape me’. They saw that I was crying, I begged them to stop but they didn’t stop, they laughed. Those hands were so aggressive, forcefully slipping them between my legs. I can’t imagine what would have happened if we hadn’t worn shorts,” the girl told the television programme Quarta Repubblica.

“I remember turning my head quickly and seeing one hand, then the other, so many hands on my body, on my breasts, between my legs, on my butt. I don’t know how many hands I had on me, but there were many. I think it was 30 men, I don’t know maybe 50, they didn’t stop and they tore off my bra and touched my breasts. I was naked, I panicked, I tried to protect my body from all those hands,” she said.

According to the victim, her attackers spoke a language she believes to have been Arabic saying, “They talked to each other. I don’t remember well, but I heard that they spoke in Arabic. I don’t know about everyone, but I heard an Arabic language. I don’t know how I found the strength to get up from the ground. Only at the end, only after at least 10 minutes, I think, we managed to escape to the barriers.”

A British woman was found in a “disordered” state in a park along Via Conca del Naviglio in Milan at 6 a.m. (4 a.m. GMT) on 23 June by a passerby who called the police, Milan’s Corriere reported.

The 44-year-old woman, who has not been identified for legal reasons, stated that she was robbed and raped by a gang of North African men in a park in Milan, according to the Milan newspaper Corriere citing police.

“We were called by a passerby who had seen the woman in a dishevelled state partially clothed in the early hours of the morning. Initially, it was thought she had been the victim of a mugging as she told officers her telephone had been stolen but she then told us she had been raped”, a Milan police spokesman stated.

According to police, they have already taken DNA samples and were also checking CCTV footage of the area. An investigation into the incident is underway, police reported.
