What would you do if you opened a door in your home and saw the end of a shot gun?

For one Midlands man, protecting his family was all that mattered.

“I figure that’s what any husband or father would do,” David Platts said.

Platts says he discovered a man crouched in his laundry room, pointing a shotgun directly at him early Saturday morning.

He says he doesn’t remember anything that went through his head before he lunged at the intruder…except for one thing.

“The only thing I do remember was that I knew if he got past me, he was going to go after my wife and my daughter.”

Within seconds, Platts says he was able to pry the shotgun from the intruder’s hands.

“I called for my wife and she took the shotgun out of my hand,” he said.

Their daughter, 17 years old, was the one who called police while wife Carrie Platts held the shotgun at the intruder. They say he broke in through their doggy door.

“When David had him on the floor he just kept staring at my daughter. and now when she closes her eyes at night that’s all she sees,” Carrie said. “We’re all having trouble sleeping. we’re having trouble just being here because you’re been invaded. your home’s been invaded. your privacy’s been taken away.”

Unknown to the Platts family at the time, arrest warrants say the intruder Jahmand Mcneill, along with two accomplices, broke into a home down the street, locked a couple in their shower, and threatened to kill their three children.

Police investigating the “brutal” murder of a father-of-two are searching for two men he had an altercation with prior to his death.

Jon Casey, 35, from Ecton Brook, was found stabbed in Barrack Road, near to the Lazeez Indian restaurant in Northampton on Friday evening.

Northamptonshire Police said a number of cars had to swerve out of the way while the three men were arguing.

Det Insp Mark Brayfield said police had also searched a house in the area.

Mr Casey was found stabbed at 17:30 GMT. He was taken to hospital, but died almost an hour later.

He is thought to have been in the Semilong area of the town prior to the incident.

Det Insp Brayfield, from the East Midlands Specialist Operations Unit Major Crime Team, said police believed the argument had started in Hester Street, before moving into Barrack Road.

He said CCTV showed Mr Casey had been involved in an altercation with two men, described as black, near the old Royal Mail sorting office at 17.20 GMT.

A PAIR of “wicked” thieves stole five poppy tins in the run up to Remembrance Day in what police described as a “deplorable” crime.

CCTV cameras captured the men red handed as they stole the appeal tins meant to help British war heroes during a three day spree.

Officers investigating the crime said one of the suspects removes the poppy tin while the other acts as a distraction to any passer-bys.

Footage was released by West Midlands Police of the thieves targeting a number of shops last Monday.

Inspector Allan Green, who is investigating the thefts, said: “There are no circumstances under which such thefts are justifiable.

“This is a wicked and deplorable crime and we need the public to help us catch those responsible.

“This money was intended for service men and women, veterans and their families – people who have risked their lives for our country, and the loved ones of those who gave their lives doing so.

“From our CCTV inquiries, it appears one man usually removes the tin while the other acts as a distraction to anyone who may try and disturb him.

One thief is described as a caucasian man who is six foot fall and of a slim build who is in his 20s and is often seen wearing a checked deerstalker hat.

The other man is described as black, around 5ft 11ins, of a medium build and is also in his 20s.

Parts of the UK are becoming no-go areas for police because minority communities are operating their own justice systems, according to the Chief Inspector of Constabulary.

The rise in ‘community justice’ means crimes as serious as murder and sexual abuse are going unreported – a situation reminiscent of Belfast in the height of the Troubles.

Tom Winsor said police officers were simply never called to some neighbourhoods, where law-abiding people rather than criminals administer their own form of justice.

He said: ‘There are some communities born under other skies who will not involve the police at all. I am reluctant to name the communities in question, but there are communities from other cultures who would prefer to police themselves.

‘There are cities in the Midlands where the police never go because they are never called. They never hear of any trouble because the community deals with that on its own.

‘It’s not that the police are afraid to go into these areas or don’t want to go into those areas,’ he said. ‘But if the police don’t get calls for help then, of course, they won’t know what’s going on.’

Honour killings, domestic violence, sexual abuse of children and female genital mutilations are some of the offences that are believed to be unreported in some cities.

Last December, three members of a self-styled ‘Muslim Patrol’ vigilante group were jailed for harassing, intimidating and assaulting people in East London while claiming they were enforcing sharia law.

In an interview with The Times, Mr Winsor said: ‘It could be anything. [Honour killings] are the most extreme case. That is murder. There is no honour in it.’ Tory MP Douglas Carswell said the rising number of unreported crimes was a damning indictment of our police.

Plans for a large, Muslim-only cemetery to be built on a plot of rural land have upset residents, who have publicly objected to the new development.

People from Catherine-de-Barnes, near Solihull in the West Midlands, have objected to the ‘major development’, which will include space for 4,000 followers of Islam to be buried, and 75 parking spaces for visitors.

As the latest census figures give the village’s population as just 613, this means the cemetery could eventually hold six-and-a-half times as many people as Catherine-de-Barnes itself.

The cemetery would be able to comply fully with Sharia law – which stipulates a method of bathing and shrouding the bodies of Muslims, before they are buried with their heads facing towards Mecca.

Solihull Council has received several letters of complaint about the plans, which were proposed by Mohammed Moosa.

The objections focus on the size of the cemetery, and the decision to place the patch on fertile land in the green belt.

One letter, from villager Karen Guest, 51, said: ‘We are amazed at yet another planning application on this beautiful arable land following the recent dogs’ home planning approval.

‘If further applications are approved then sooner rather than later the whole acreage will be built up.’
