They are also doing public panels promoting UFO theories.

Members of an independent NASA panel studying UFOs, or what the U.S. government now terms UAP for “unidentified anomalous phenomena,” said in their first public meeting on Wednesday that scant high-quality data and a lingering stigma pose the greatest barriers to unraveling such mysteries.

The 16-member body, formed last year among leading experts from scientific fields ranging from physics to astrobiology, held a four-hour session streamed live on a NASA webcast to deliberate their preliminary findings ahead of issuing a report expected later this summer.

The panel’s chairman, astrophysicist David Spergel, said his team’s role was “not to resolve the nature of these events,” but rather to give NASA a “roadmap” to guide future analysis.

NASA officials said several panelists had been subjected to unspecified “online abuse” and harassment since beginning their work in June last year.

“It is really disheartening to hear of the harassment that our panelists have faced online because they’re studying this topic,” NASA’s science chief, Nicola Fox, said in her opening remarks. “Harassment only leads to further stigmatization.”

The greatest challenge panel members cited, however, was a dearth of scientifically reliable methods for documenting UFOs, typically sightings of what appear as objects moving in ways that defy the bounds of known technologies and laws of nature.

The underlying problem, they said, is that the phenomena in question are generally being detected and recorded with cameras, sensors and other equipment not designed or calibrated to accurately observe and measure such peculiarities.

“If I were to summarize in one line what I feel we’ve learned, it’s we need high-quality data,” Spergel said. “The current existing data and eyewitness reports alone are insufficient to provide conclusive evidence about the nature and origin of every UAP event.”

The NASA advisory panel represents the first UFO inquiry ever conducted under the auspices of the U.S. space agency for a subject the government once consigned to the exclusive and secretive purview of military and national security officials.

The NASA study is separate from a newly formalized Pentagon-based investigation of sightings reported in recent years by military aviators and analyzed by U.S. defense and intelligence officials.

NASA and the DoD are the only groups promoting UFOs at this point. Them, and Tucker Carlson.

No one in the conspiracy movement promotes this anymore.

When I was a kid, before smartphones, every single conspiracy show on shortwave and AM radio was talking about aliens and UFOs. They would bring on all these people who said they saw UFOs or were contacted by aliens. Then, smartphones come out, and everyone was carrying a camera in their pocket, and all of a sudden, no one was making these claims anymore – because anyone would just ask “oh, why didn’t you film it?”

If UFOs were real, and flying around everywhere, people would be posting cellphone videos every day. Instead, the only videos you have are released directly by the government – who, also, according to Tucker Carlson, are trying to cover up UFOs.

A retired Navy senior chief petty officer said he saw a metallic orb in Afghanistan that’s similar to the one shown in a video during last month’s Senate hearing, but there’s no secure way for him to come forward.

“I’m going to be honest with you. I’d love to tell everything in detail, but I’m not willing to go to jail to do it,” said a retired Navy senior chief, whose name is being withheld for fear of repercussions.

“I’m constrained because of security agreements, so they need a way for submissions to be made,” he told Fox News Digital.

Not having a secure way to report potential UFOs was a glaring oversight in the eyes of two lawmakers on both sides of the aisle after All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO)’s April 19 UFO hearing in front of the Senate Armed Services Subcommittee on Emerging Threats and Capabilities.

AARO is an office within the US Office of the Secretary of Defense that investigates UAPs – unidentified anomalous phenomena – which is the government-created word for UFOs.

Head of the agency, Dr. Sean Kirkpatrick, showed the second-along video clips (seen above) to lawmakers and said, “This is essentially all the data we have of this event.”

“It’s going to be virtually impossible to fully identify that, just based off that video,” he said, so it’s considered an “unresolved case.”

The retired Navy senior said that he and other military service members saw a similar metallic orb from an airborne platform in Afghanistan in the early 2000s.

“There’s quite a bit of gray here, because the customer we were working for at the time retained all collected materials,” the Navy senior enlisted told Fox News Digital.

“But I know where the bodies are buried, not necessarily where the digital data is though. I can point them in the right direction.”

After the April 19 Senate hearing, Senators Mark Warner (D-VA) and Marco Rubio (R-FL) wrote a five-bullet-point letter to the DOD, which was shared with Fox News Digital.

One of the arguments was the lack of a secure way for potential UFO witnesses to safely come forward and share their stories.

“To date, we have seen no efforts to communicate the existence of the secure process to the public,” the senators said in their letter. “We request that you provide us an update on the plan to publicize the secure process for witnesses to come forward.”

Rubio told Fox News Digital, in an emailed statement through a spokesperson, that Americans “are understandably concerned” about objects in the county’s airspace and near facilities.

“What’s worse, our government spent too many years ignoring or downplaying the threat,” Rubio said. “Thankfully, that is beginning to change, but as we saw earlier this year, the defense and intelligence communities are still struggling.”

The Pentagon on Wednesday declassified a video shot by a US MQ-9 Reaper drone after it encountered an unidentified flying object zooming over the Middle East. The incident, which was reported last year, is the first such encounter by an unmanned aircraft with what the military has renamed Unexplained Anomalous Phenomena (UAP).

Explaining the video’s contents during a Senate hearing, Sean Kirkpatrick, director of the Pentagon’s All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), listed the attributes of the bright and shimmering “metallic orb” the military drone saw.

“Silver. Translucent. Metallic. 10,000 to 30,000 feet [in the air] with apparent velocities from the stationary to mach to no thermal exhausts usually detected,” he said, noting the object had behaved “consistent with other ‘metallic orb’ observations in the region.”

Kirkpatrick did not rule out that the orb could be “adversary breakthrough technology,” but said it could also fall under the heading of “known objects or phenomena” or “extraterrestrials.”
