Zambia has extradited a Chinese filmmaker to neighbouring Malawi to face charges relating to racism and child exploitation.

Lu Ke was a Malawi resident when he was exposed by BBC Africa Eye, which reported he had used local children to film personalised greetings videos, some of which included racist content.

The videos could be bought for up to $70 (£55) on Chinese social media and internet platforms.

Lu Ke denied making derogatory videos.

He had said he made them in order to spread Chinese culture to the local community.

Lu Ke was detained last month in Zambia and fined for entering it illegally.

Malawi’s Attorney General Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda confirmed to the BBC that he had been extradited. He added that the Chinese citizen is due to appear in court on Monday in line with procedures after someone has been arrested.

The BBC Africa Eye documentary led to a promise from China to clamp down on online racism against Africans, the South China Morning Post reported.

Also in the wake of the film, social media platforms popular in China took steps to prevent the circulation of the types of videos from Africa that it highlighted, according to website Rest of World.

In one of the videos filmed in Malawi and seen by the BBC, a group of young children is made to chant in Chinese – “I’m a black monster. My IQ is low”, clearly unaware of what they are saying.

A man has been convicted of murdering his own albino brother in order to sell his body parts on as good luck charms.

Macdonald Masumbuka, 22, was killed by his brother and four other men in Malawi in 2018.

All of the men received life with hard labour after sentencing at Malawi high court today (June 28).

Catholic priest Thomas Muhosha, a herbalist, a police officer and two other men received a lesser sentence of 30 years for participating in the sale of Masumbuka’s body parts.

The Catholic Church had already suspended Muhosha from priesthood when his involvement in the gruesome ordeal first came to light in 2018.

The victim was reported missing in the southern district of Machinga in February 2018.

His torso and head were discovered a month later but his arms and legs had been chopped off.

Speaking at today’s sentencing, Judge Dorothy NyaKaunda Kamanga noted that Masumbuka – slain violently in a graveyard – was betrayed by people close to him.

This, along with how meticulously the murder was planned, where the key aspects of the case she considered when sentencing the men.

Albinos have long been the targets of sick killings in Malawi and other countries in and around the African Great Lakes area.

A campaign against a planned statue of Indian independence leader Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi on charges of “racism” has attracted thousands of signatures in Malawi, Voice of America reported Thursday.

The activists allege that Gandhi has a history of using racial slurs in his use.

An online campaign in the East African country, entitled “Gandhi Must Fall,” outlines its opposition to government plans to erect a statue of Gandhi and has already attracted over 4,000 signatures based on letters he wrote from South Africa as a young man.

In 1893, Gandhi wrote to the Natal parliament explaining that a “general belief seems to prevail in the Colony that the Indians are a little better, if at all, than savages or the Natives of Africa.”

In another letter written in 1904 to a health officer in Johannesburg, he declared that the council “must withdraw Kaffirs” from an unsanitary slum known as “Coolie Location,” where many Africans lived alongside Indians.

“About the mixing of the Kaffirs with the Indians, I must confess I feel most strongly,” he wrote at the time.

According to the campaign’s organizer, Mpambira Aubrey Kambewa, these remarks prove Gandhi’s racist beliefs.

Posing as a wealthy businessman looking to increase his wealth, Anas tracked down a self-confessed killer named Kamanga, who told the team, in secret footage published on Monday, that the most useful parts for good luck were the head and genitals. Along with an associate, Kamanga told the BBC team that he could create good luck for the ‘businessman’ by killing and sucking out the blood of children.

A further meeting with the killers at night, saw them describe how they could also break the skull and remove either the brain or tongue.

The journalists started running and were pursued by the mob, who threw stones at them.

“They were going to end our lives,” Anas said, as he recalled their flight from the angry villagers. The team managed to escape by running for their lives into the night, later to be saved by community police and a local chief.

 The incident brought an end to the BBC team’s investigation and according to them many of the murders remain unsolved.

The United Nations has pulled staff out of two districts in southern Malawi where a vampire scare has triggered mob violence in which at least five people have been killed.

While the debate on government’s decision to temporarily suspend anti-gay laws rages on, one of the country’s politicians has demanded the killing of all homosexuals, as a best way to deal with the issue.

Ken Msonda, a spokesperson and administrative secretary for former ruling Peoples Party (PP), has since called on the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government to openly clarify its stand on homosexuality.

In December last year, Minister of Justice Samuel Tembenu revealed that Malawi has imposed a moratorium on anti-homosexual laws pending a decision on whether to repeal the legislation.

Tembenu said a review of all colonial-area sodomy laws would be launched in consultation with the people of Malawi, and ordered the release of two men who were arrested charged with having sex “against the order of nature” in Lilongwe.

But Msonda has taken different approach to the issue.

Writing in his personal capacity on social media, Msonda labelled homosexuality as an act of evil.

”Government should come up clear on the DPP administration stand on the issue of gays and lesbians,” wrote Msonda on his Facebook account.

”Gays and lesbians are worse than dogs,” he said in apparent reference to what Zimbabwea President Robert Mugabe said.

In an angry tone, he described gays and lesbians as sons and daughters of the evil one – Jabulosi (Satan).

”Arresting them won’t address this problem because sooner or later they are being released on bail. The best way to deal with this problem is to KILL them!”.

Msonda also lashed out at the country’s media for providing a platform for homosexuals to express their views while creating debate on the issue.

”It is pathetic to see our media houses parading these dogs on TV and newspapers hiding behind human rights – human rights my foot! THE DEVIL HAS NO RIGHTS!,” a seemed angry Msonda added.

These Africans don’t play around with fags – meaning they are in some way significantly more civilized than our countries are.
