Dried yellow mealworms could soon be hitting supermarket shelves and restaurants across Europe.

The European Union’s 27 nations gave the greenlight Tuesday to a proposal to put the Tenebrio molitor beetle’s larvae on the market as a “novel food.”

The move came after the EU’s food safety agency published a scientific opinion this year that concluded worms were safe to eat. Researchers said the worms, either eaten whole or in powdered form, are a protein-rich snack or an ingredient for other foods.

Following Tuesday’s approval by EU states, a EU regulation authorizing dried yellow mealworms as a food will be adopted in the coming weeks.

Better start checking those food labels if you want to avoid powdered worms. It’s going to be the new soy flour in the sense that they’re going to put it into everything.

But soy flour will still be there, because they want people to be living on soy and worms.

Frankly – we must admit – the worms have to be better than the soy.

In fact, they had to switch to the worms because the people they feed on soy end up just physically shutting down.

Scientists have unveiled the perfect diet for climate-conscious consumers.

Sustainability expert Dr Michalis Hadjikakou’s ‘climate diet’ is aimed at reducing greenhouse gases.

Dr Hadjikakou, a researcher at Deakin University in Melbourne, suggested protein sources such as quinoa and chia be consumed instead of a hearty steak or lamb.

The menu includes mealworms, grasshoppers, kangaroo meat and quinoa, and excludes Australian favourites such as sausages.

Experts have also warned against vegetarian favourite halloumi.

Conscious consumers who opt for halloumi at brunch over bacon might want to reconsider, as scientists have claimed the dairy industry is making a big impact on emissions too.

Scientists who wrote the study, Country-specific dietary shifts to mitigate climate and water crises, also recommended buying local produce and avoiding imported fruit and vegetables.

The study also noted edible weeds as a cheap and healthy alternative.

In heterosexual men, pictures of rotting flesh, maggots and spoiled food induce the same physiological stress response as pictures of two men kissing each other. That is the surprising finding that was recently published in the peer-reviewed scientific journal Psychology & Sexuality.

“Participants watched a series of slideshows: male couples kissing, male couples holding hands, mixed-sex couples kissing, mixed-sex couples holding hands, boring images (e.g., paper clips) and disgusting images (maggots),” [study author Karen L. Blair] explained. “In between slide shows, we asked participants questions about their responses to the photos (not yet published) and we also collected saliva samples in order to assess salivary alpha-amylase in response to each slide show (the current paper).”

Measuring levels of salivary alpha-amylase, a digestive enzyme that is associated with stress and is especially responsive to disgust, allowed the researchers to examine the men’s physiological reaction to the photos. The study was based on results from 120 heterosexual men (aged 18 to 45).

“In comparing the salivary alpha-amylase responses of participants to the various slideshows, we found that participants had higher salivary alpha-amylase responses to the images of two men kissing and the disgusting images. In both cases, these responses were significantly different than the responses they had to the neutral stimuli.”
