China’s Linux (Android-knock-off) phones are fine.

There are a lot of options with Linux now.

Steam is making some serious gains with the SteamOS gaming systems.

Reuters:

China has released its first homegrown open-source desktop operating system, named OpenKylin, state media said, as the country steps up efforts to cut reliance on U.S. technology.

Released on Wednesday, and based on the existing open-source Linux operating system, China’s version was built by a community of about 4,000 developers, and is used in its space programme and industries such as finance and energy, they added.

China’s massive market for operating systems was worth 15.5 billion yuan ($2.1 billion) last year, state media said, citing an industry report.

Developing an operating system independent of U.S. technology has been an important goal for China’s tech industry in recent years, with many companies and organisations having contributed to the development of the OpenKylin system.

It most notable backer is the China Industrial Control Systems Cyber Emergency Response Team under the purview of the industry and information technology ministry.

Linux is already used for servers. I don’t see anything preventing it from being a serious home-computing alternative.

In fact, those Chromebooks were fine, weren’t they?

I never had one, but heard they were fine.

Windows is now virtually nonviable – not only because it is controlled by the West, but because it has almost totally stopped working. It’s just a complete nightmare. The majority of people refused to accept Windows 11. This is not a good situation, when you have people hating every new piece of software you release more than the last.

It’s really just a matter of time until something replaces Windows. Frankly, AI should cause Linux development to jump by leaps and bounds, more or less overnight. It can write new code, and, perhaps more importantly, it can go back and clean up and streamline existing open sores code.

China currently has several (more than a dozen, last time I checked) different ongoing Linux projects that are getting funding from the government, which is seeking to decouple their computer systems from the West.

It’s hard work, but I’m hopeful.

Here is a Western review of the new system.

Class Action Suit Against Apple Over Dangerous Stupid Watches https://www.anglinarchive.com/2021/12/12/class-action-suit-against-apple-over-dangerous-stupid-watches/ Sun, 12 Dec 2021 00:00:00 +0000

Buy a Swiss watch or buy a joke watch.

Don’t buy a “smart watch.”

This shit is gay.

You don’t need meeting reminders or news updates on your watch, you look like a fag.

New York Post:

The Apple Watch can leave consumers with serious injuries, according to a class-action lawsuit.

One man claims his forearm was “severely sliced” by the pricey watch after the glass screen popped out, leaving jagged edges, he complained in court documents.

Alabama resident Chris Smith, whose Apple Watch cost $359 plus tax, was golfing when the gory scene unfolded.

The cut slashed open a vein, according to the federal lawsuit filed this week in California.

The lithium-ion battery in the device is prone to swelling that can push out the screen, creating an “unreasonably dangerous safety hazard,” according to the litigation.

I wish Steve Jobs wouldn’t have died, or that when he did die they would have put like, Peter Thiel in charge of the company instead of “shove it up my ass” Rim Cook.

Rim’s philosophy of design is simple: “can I shove this up my rectum or into the rectum of a young boy?”

That’s why innovation at Apple has stagnated so badly that it is almost unbelievable. Friggin’ Facebook is now more innovative. Not to mention Tesla, even.

Frankly, Huawei and LG are now much more interesting than Apple.

Apple should be competing with Google, period. Instead, they’re a joke company that is totally incapable of doing anything even remotely interesting with their inexplicably overvalued stock.

It’s sad and it’s dumb.

Apple doesn’t even have any plans do do anything. They plan to just keep selling people the same cellphone over and over again. There is virtually zero improvement from the iPhone 6. Every addition has been a gimmick (other than if you want to take professional tier photographs, and I think anyone who wants to do that will just buy a real camera, and also, Huawei and Samsung both take better photographs than the iPhone 13).

In 2021, they finally released the M1 chip – which was planned by Steve in 2007.

But meanwhile, Linux actually is making major advancements, and Lenovo is all in on providing full driver support on most of their high-end machines.

If Steam manages to figure out how to run games on Linux – which they claim to have done, and which we’re going to find out more about soon – then both Apple and Microsoft are going to be irrelevant companies,

Huawei high end phones are better that high end iPhones and more secure. And 40% less.

All of these bullshit fake companies are only successful because propped up by a corrupt US government system obsessed with rewarding anti-competitive behaviors.

Linux Creator Finally Stops Killing Black People, Replaces Murderous Words in Coding Style Guide https://www.anglinarchive.com/2020/07/12/wip-linux-devs-finally-stop-killing-black-people-replace-murderous-words-in-coding-style-guide/ Sun, 12 Jul 2020 00:00:00 +0000

Pictured: Linus Torvalds, creator of Linux, back when he still had a spine.

Linus Torvalds is old, tired, and just wants to be paid and left alone.

They broke him back in 2018, when enemies – led by the New Yorker, a Jewish media publication – effectively ran him out of his own company. He was allowed to return after a period of time off, but now he basically just functions as a figurehead, and does what the frizzy-haired mulattoes running the HR department tell him to do.

This newest thing he has agreed to is just simply bizarre. Apparently, we can’t even say the words “white” and “black” anymore – in any context.

ZDNet:

Linus Torvalds approved on Friday a new and more inclusive terminology for the Linux kernel code and documentation.

Going forward, Linux developers have been asked to use new terms for the master/slave and blacklist/whitelist terminologies.

Proposed alternatives for master/slave include:
primary/secondary
main/replica or subordinate
initiator/target
requester/responder
controller/device
host/worker or proxy
leader/follower
director/performer

Proposed alternatives for blacklist/whitelist include:
denylist/allowlist
blocklist/passlist

The Linux team did not recommend any specific terms but asked developers to choose as appropriate.

The new terms are to be used for new source code written for the Linux kernel and its associated documentation.

The older terms, considered inadequate now, will only be allowed for maintaining older code and documentation, or “when updating code for an existing (as of 2020) hardware or protocol specification that mandates those terms.”

“Primary” and “secondary” are definitely not good replacements for “master” and “slave.” Probably, better terms would be “boss” and “employee.” However, that probably is still not allowed under this new communism that we have on our hands, as it still implies a power differential.

The terms leader, director, and controller reek of toxic masculinity. Why does there have to be an imbalance of power with some parts of the Linux kernel being above others? We have equality now, and both people of color and women are at the same level as white men. We need to reflect that in software, just like we’re now making software reflect that black lives matter. There is no place for hierarchy in software function.

It’s time to address structural racism in open source software, yes, but it’s also time to address structural inequality.

If we want a truly inclusive open source software environment, we need to destroy unequal relationships of power in computer programs.

In fact, we need to stop giving orders to our computers altogether. If you think about it, computers are just like black people. We’ve built America on the backs of blacks, by forcing them to pick the civilization-building material known as cotton, and now we’re exploiting computers for our own selfish gains too.

It’s slavery all over again.

Computer Lives Matter.

Linux Devs Propose Using “Inclusive” Words and Banning Offensive Terms https://www.anglinarchive.com/2020/07/07/linux-devs-propose-using-inclusive-words-and-banning-offensive-terms/ Tue, 07 Jul 2020 00:00:00 +0000

Pictured: “Tux,” the brand character of the Linux kernel.

It didn’t take long after Linus was forced out of the project for being white for the project to turn anti-white.

At this point, Linux is even more anti-white than Apple or Windows.

The Register:

In the light of the 2020 “global reckoning on race relations” the Linux kernel developers have stepped up with proposed new inclusive terminology guidelines for their coding community.

The proposal has come from Intel Principal Engineer Dan Williams and won support from other Linux maintainers including Chris Mason and Greg Kroah-Hartman.

Words to be avoided include “slave”, with suggested substitutions such as secondary, subordinate, replica or follower, and “blacklist”, for which the replacements could be blocklist or denylist. The proposal has allowed for exceptions when maintaining a userspace API or when updating a code for a specification that mandates those terms. The existing Linux kernel coding style, described here, and has made no mention of inclusive language.

The proposal is to add a new document, to be called Linux kernel inclusive technology, which will give the rationale for the changes. Referencing the fact that “the African slave trade was a brutal system of human misery deployed at global scale,” the document has acknowledged that “word choice decisions in a modern software project does next to nothing to compensate for that legacy.”

The goal, though, will be to “maximize availability and efficiency of the global developer community to participate in the Linux kernel developer process.”

“The revelation of 2020 was that black voices were heard on a global scale and the Linux kernel project has done its small part to answer that call as it wants black voices, among all voices, in its developer community,” the proposal read.

The proposal also noted that “non-inclusive terminology” has a “distracting effect” and “injures developer efficiency.” Of the anticipated backlash, Williams stated: “Of course it is around this point someone jumps in with an etymological argument about why people should not be offended. Etymological arguments do not scale. The scope and pace of Linux to reach new developers exceeds the ability of historical terminology defenders to describe ‘no, not that connotation’.”

For people that are supposed to be smart, these Linux developers are quite stupid. Or maybe they’re just malicious and hate white people.

These are some of the points they make:

  1. “The African slave trade was a brutal system of human misery deployed at global scale”
  2. “Word choice decisions in a modern software project does next to nothing to compensate for that legacy”
  3. “The Linux kernel project has done its small part to answer that call as it wants black voices, among all voices, in its developer community”
  4. “Of course it is around this point someone jumps in with an etymological argument about why people should not be offended. Etymological arguments do not scale.”

“The African slave trade was a brutal system of human misery deployed at global scale”

First of all, the African slave trade never ended. Africans still enslave Africans on a daily basis. Every day, black people do worse things to other blacks than white people ever did to blacks.

White people were also enslaved.

From Wikipedia:

Under Muslim rule, the Arab slave trades that included Caucasian captives were often fueled by raids into European territories or were taken as children in the form of a blood tax from the families of citizens of conquered territories to serve the empire for a variety of functions. In the mid-19th century, the term ‘white slavery’ was used to describe the Christian slaves that were sold into the Barbary slave trade.

…

The phrase “white slavery” was used by Charles Sumner in 1847 to describe the chattel slavery of Christians throughout the Barbary States and primarily in the Algiers, the capital of Ottoman Algeria. It also encompassed many forms of slavery, including the European concubines (Cariye) often found in Turkish harems.

Perhaps we should be rioting, too.

“Word choice decisions in a modern software project does next to nothing to compensate for that legacy”

The idea that we must “compensate” for the past, that software should compensate for the past, and that words in software can somehow compensate for the past are deeply retarded.

Black people are free to go back to Africa, but they stay in white people’s countries and actively try to get into white people’s countries because their own countries are hell holes.

Living in white people’s countries is a privilege, and we’ve been putting up with their violent behavior and ridiculously high criminality for far too long. They should be compensating us.

“The Linux kernel project […] wants black voices, among all voices, in its developer community”

The idea that blacks can somehow contribute something of value to the Linux kernel or software in general, and that they’re not doing it because they find words like “slave” and “master” in the code is preposterous.

I can count with the fingers of my hands the amount of blacks who can write something of value in a programming language, and I have the same amount of fingers as other humans on this planet.

But even if they could contribute and weren’t doing so because they feel offended, then who cares? It’s not as if we didn’t have white people to work on, you know, the things that white people have created!

I vehemently oppose people of color taking over what my people have created.

“Etymological arguments do not scale”

Why do we have to hear bugmen smugly tell us such things? Why do black feelings have to dictate the reality of white people do in white people’s countries and in white people’s industries? Why can’t blacks just go back to Africa if they don’t like it here?

Why does offending white people not matter?

Why do we not matter, not even in our own countries?

Linux-Based “Windows 12 Lite” is a Great Option, I’m Sure https://www.anglinarchive.com/2020/02/11/linux-based-windows-12-lite-is-a-great-option-im-sure/ Tue, 11 Feb 2020 00:00:00 +0000 Andrew Anglin

A Linux distro with a Windows background? This could be big.

Windows has gotten completely out of control, to the point where it is virtually pointless. This is what happens with monopolies, I guess, but it is virtually impossible to grasp the fact that they now just do updates, all the time, at any time. Normal people simply cannot have this. Everyone on earth has work schedules, and some of them are pretty tight.

Although I work a lot, I have a relatively flexible schedule. I can wake up or go to sleep at any time I want, I can take an hour or two off whenever I need it and I have very few “hard” appointments. However, virtually every hard appointment I’ve ever had – usually podcasts or Skype calls – has been delayed by Windows updates.

I can only imagine the number of people who get caught in the situation of:

  • Get a call 15 minutes before a meeting
  • Have to send an email before the meeting, based on what was said in the call
  • Turn on the laptop, wait twenty minutes for Windows to update

I know we can all now say “just use your phone,” but phones are not really a workspace. It is not only 10x as fast to type on a laptop than on a phone. It is a matter of being able to organize your notes, your files, everything. Serious work is not done on phones, period. Furthermore, any work you try to do on a phone is going to take a lot longer, even if you do have the ability to make it work. So forcing the phone to be the only valid computer that can be used in a situation with a tight timeframe is insane, but that is exactly what Windows has done to 90% of the world.

This problem has become so common that “sorry, Windows updated on me” has become a universal excuse that no one has any choice but to accept. It is effectively like being caught in an earthquake or a volcano eruption.

I have no idea why they need this many updates. In fact, I have not even read a reasonable explanation for it. I think the explanation is “we don’t need an explanation – if you don’t like it, grow a beard and run Linux, you nerd.”

Well, someone on reddit took a picture of a Windows-oriented Linux distro someone made and passed out at a convention that is kind of funny.

This is legitimately funny, as it epitomizes the typical Linux cultist. It is evangelical propaganda, that looks like a religious tract, advertising the salvation of souls through open source. It even makes the false claim that it can run games (though you do wonder if a gamer would misspell “Nvidia”).

And that is all it is – a scam advertising campaign to convert people to the cult of Linux. Someone took whichever distro and added a Windows background, then passed it out to try to trick people into believing it was related to Windows. It is typical tricks.

Of course, for anyone who doesn’t know, running Linux on a personal computer is a far from reasonable action. I have done it for years on and off, and I will be the first to tell you that it is simply a waste of time. There are several legitimate and serious benefits – including a lack of surprise updates – but all of these benefits are vastly outweighed by extreme negatives.

It leaves me reminded of the opposition to the current Jewish order.

Our society is running on a totally broken operating system that interferes with every aspect of our daily lives, something which in theory should be very easy to oppose with an option that would be very popular among the people. But instead of having good options, the only people opposing the system are either presenting some kind of unhinged neo-Nazism or a dumb and insane communist agenda. And people advertise these joke alternatives using dumb advertising campaigns, just like this Linux CD. And just like with Linux, the only result is the formation of a fringe cult.

There are very few people on earth presenting a reasonable critique of democracy with realistic solutions that could be implemented to replace this system. So the political consumer, just like the software consumer, is stuck with the terrible alternative of simply dealing with the established order.

Linux home distros have spent overly much time attempting to implement all kinds of dumb imitations of modern graphical interface features instead of focusing on drivers and creating a system that just works out of the box. Most people would settle for a Windows XP graphical interface if it was easy and it just worked, but Ubuntu in particular – the biggest Linux distro – has instead gone down a bizarre rabbit hole of trying to create a system that competes directly in terms of graphics with Windows.

Just so, neo-Nazis and assorted lunatics have dived face first into the rabbit hole of attempting to manufacture a complex ideological system to compete with the complex ideological system of the establishment, while abandoning the obvious, which would be to keep things very simple and provide a consistent critique of the most obvious and most painful aspects of democracy, and explain how they could be easily fixed.

Don’t like random twenty minute surprise updates 5 times a week? Maybe you’d like to spend six hours trying to install the dependencies for every piece of software?
Don’t like immigration and the purposeful destruction of the family? Maybe you’d like to riot in the streets with fat guys in military costumes who believe in destroying America and implementing an “ideological cocktail” of neo-Nazism, communism, the KKK and Russian theocracy because the Enlightenment was bad?

I just thought of this analogy when I looked at this CD on reddit, so I will have to think further about how deep the analogy goes. Because it could go very deep.

Right now I can tell you: the shared problem between open source operating systems and alternative political theory is a lack of financial resources. The lack of financial resources leads to a lack of human resources, so you are only left with a few talented romantics driven by ideology surrounded by a bunch of weirdos. And that is always a recipe for a cult.

The weirdos and the emerging cult dynamics then push away anyone who could be convinced through an appeal to idealism and morality to join your side, despite the lack of finances. You are simply left spinning your wheels forever, while never being able to reach the hundreds of millions of people who are fed up with the established norms.

After SJWs Take Over Linux, Top Devs are Considering Burning It to the Ground https://www.anglinarchive.com/2018/09/24/after-sjws-take-over-linux-top-devs-are-considering-burning-it-to-the-ground/ Mon, 24 Sep 2018 00:00:00 +0000 Adrian Sol

Linux is about to get nasty.

When I heard that Linus, the top maintainer of the Linux operating system, had finally cucked and allowed the SJW mob to bully him into accepting politically correct norms into the kernel development scene, I just thought “eh, that’s too bad, this guy used to be based.”

However, things are apparently not going to end there. First, Linus is not the only one being run out of the community – and those people are not taking it lightly.

If they go for the nuclear option – which is being discussed – this could have world-altering consequences.

As an open letter posted to the Linux Kermal Mail List, provided by LULZ.com, reads:

Date Thu, 20 Sep 2018 09:28:14 +0000
From unconditionedwitness@redchan …
Subject Re: A Plea to Unfuck our Codes of Conduct

Regarding those who are ejected from the Linux Kernel Community after this CoC:

Contributors can, at any time, rescind the license grant regarding their property via written notice to those whom they are rescinding the grant from (regarding their property (code)) .

The “CoC” is the “code of conduct” or “contributor’s covenant” that was adopted recently.

It was created by some kind of tranny freak.

Moreover, it was created for explicitly political reasons.

It allows anyone to be expelled for any reason, regardless of their importance, seniority and the quality of their work, if they offend anyone.

And of course, the “people” responsible for enforcing this system will be creatures like “Coraline” above.

The GPL version 2 lacks a no-rescission clause (the GPL version 3 has such a clause: to attempt furnish defendants with an estoppel defense, the Linux Kernel is licensed under version 2, however, as are the past contributions).

When the defendants ignore the rescission and continue using the plaintiff’s code, the plaintiff can sue under the copyright statute.

Banned contributors _should_ do this (note: plaintiff is to register their copyright prior to filing suit, the copyright does not have to be registered at the time of the violation however)

Additionally when said banned contributors joined the Linux team, they were under the impression that it was a meritocracy: in-fact this belief was stated or ratified by those within the governing body regarding Linux when the contributors began their work (whatever that body was at that time, it could have been simply Linus, or Linus and a few associates).

The remuneration for the work was implied to be, or perhaps stated, to be fame as-well as a potential increase in the contributors stature, in addition to membership in the Linux Kernel club or association, or whatever it is that the Linux Kernel Community actually is (which a court may determine… it is something, suffice to say).

Thusly for work, consideration was promised by (Linus? Others? There are years of mailing list archives with which to determine).

And now that consideration has been clawed-back and the contributors image has been tarnished.

Basically, some of the smartest computer scientists in the world have been contributing to the Linux kernel for years, expecting in return nothing more than prestige and recognition for their work.

But now even that is being taken away by worthless human garbage for ideological reasons. Thus they would be fully and legally justified in taking back ownership of their contributed code.

That would obviously cripple the kernel, however – which is the point.

Thus the worker did work, however the other side of the implied, or perhaps written (email memorandums), understanding has been violated (once the contributor has been banned under the new non-meritocratic “CoC”).

Damages could be recovered under: breach of contract, quazi-contract, libel, false-light. (services rendered for the contractual claims, future lost income for the libel claims)

In addition to copyright claims. (statutory damages, profits)

For greatest effect, all rescission should be done at once in a bloc. (With other banned contributors).

Contributors: You were promised something, you laboured for that promise, and now the promise has become a lie. You have remedies available to you now, as-well as in the close future .

Additionally, regarding those who promoted the Code of Conduct to be used against the linux kernel contributors, knowing full well the effect it would have and desiring those effects; recovery for the ejected contributors via a tortious interference claim may be possible.

You might not understand the importance of this intuitively, since “Linux kernel development” sounds like something obscure and irrelevant to everyday life.

However, the overwhelming majority of all computers currently in operation are running on Linux. Most importantly, most web infrastructure relies on it, not to mention smartphones and some financial infrastructure.

If these devs go through with the process described in this open letter, it would make it illegal to use current versions of Linux without paying these devs copyright fees. In other words, all their code would either have to be taken out, which would cripple most of the world’s tech infrastructure, or everyone will need to start using some other OS – which doesn’t currently exist.

As LULZ.com notes:

If carried out, ramifications could include large parts of the internet being left vulnerable to exploits, and companies around the world might even inherit bundles of unwanted legal liabilities.

In other words, the consequences of this SJW hostile takeover of Linux could be economic damage numbering in the trillions.

Hey, it was all worth it, right?

Andrew mentioned earlier this week that this could well be a kike move to undermine Linux’s security, and there’s evidence that this is the case.

Several users on 4chan’s technology board speculate that Theo is targeted first because he famously resisted an Intel backdoor.

However, I highly doubt that their goal was to destroy Linux – that would be completely insane. They probably just wanted to inject a bunch of degenerates into the development team so that it would be easier to push for backdoors and other security loopholes.

Hopefully, seeing how the old guard Linux dev community seems to have their finger on the nuclear button, the SJW/kike offensive will have no choice but to capitulate and retreat.

This is taking political correctness to a whole new realm.

He didn’t call anyone a nigger, he didn’t grab anyone by the pussy, he didn’t even donate to an anti-gay marriage Christian charity.

He was just mean to people.

And so he has to resign?

The New Yorker:

The e-mails of the celebrated programmer Linus Torvalds land like thunderbolts from on high onto public lists, full of invective, insults, and demeaning language. “Please just kill yourself now. The world will be a better place,” he wrote in one. “Guys, this is not a dick-sucking contest,” he observed in another. “SHUT THE FUCK UP!” he began in a third.

Torvalds has publicly posted thousands of scathing messages targeting programmers who submit what he deems flawed code to the Linux computer-operating-system kernel, which he brought to life more than twenty-five years ago and now administers as a collaborative, open-source project. Today, the Linux kernel is famous, running the enormous computers of Google, PayPal, Amazon, and eBay, and the two billion mobile phones using the Android operating system. Torvalds, though, retains final say over each precious line of code, just as he did when he first started working on the system as a graduate student at the University of Helsinki. For years, he has been known as Linux’s “benevolent dictator for life.”

On Sunday, the benevolent dictator announced that he would be stepping down temporarily, to “get some assistance on how to understand people’s emotions and respond appropriately.” Torvalds, who is forty-eight and lives with his family outside Portland, Oregon, made clear that he wasn’t burned out. “I very much do want to continue to do this project that I’ve been working on for almost three decades,” he wrote in a post to the Linux-kernel mailing list. “I need to take a break to get help on how to behave differently and fix some issues in my tooling and workflow.” Torvalds named a deputy, Gregory Kroah-Hartman, to run the project while he was away.

What kind of world are we living in where Jews are cutting the dicks off of teenage boys and you can be run out of your own company – which you, as a genius, single-handedly built – for sending mean emails?

Does this make sense to anyone? The priorities we’ve got going on here?

Furthermore – this is probably a kike conspiracy to fuck over Linux security. It was the most secure system. The only truly open-source secure system.

I don’t follow it closely enough to know who the guy taking over is, but I do not trust whoever it is. Linus was Linux. It is his thing. It belongs to him. No one should ever be able to take that away.

And it was no secret that Linus was an asshole. He’s always been an asshole. It’s a part of his brand.

How is it illegal to be an asshole?

They just keep taking this shit further and further – first it’s racism, then it’s sexism, then it’s hating faggots, now it’s just “being a mean person, generally.”

What in fuck.

Few things get SJWs angrier than male nerds contributing to the common good for free. For example, from the Crooked Timber blog for conventionally minded academics:

Where are the women in the history of open source?

by SUMANA HARIHARESWARA on MAY 21, 2015

Hi – Sumana Harihareswara here. You might remember me from my April guest post about free/open source software, licensing, and codes of conduct in open communities. … Today I’m considering where we got frameworks that we free software/open source folks often take for granted, and specifically what might have been erased from our intellectual heritage due to sexism.

What’s missing?

If you ask some people about the history of free software, you hear about Richard Stallman creating the GNU Public License and formulating the Four Freedoms. …

Some people will tell you a bit about Stallman, and then discuss how Eric S. Raymond wrote “The Cathedral and the Bazaar” and articulated more pragmatic language for open source folks to use, and how permissive licenses helped popularize open source. …

But in any case — where the f*** are the women?

Getting paid to program?

I recently started looking back at the narrative I’ve been told about the origins of free and open source software, the male-centric narrative about Richard Stallman and Eric Raymond that I’ve repeated a zillion times as a teacher. I’ve corrected my understanding of my general software engineering heritage to correct for biases, so I’ve reclaimed a heritage that has tons of gender diversity. But what about my open source history? Approximately every field in history has suppressed or hidden contributions by women, so I figure it’s safe to assume that open source philosophy is similar, and proceed on that basis. Whom am I missing?

86086You can do a reality check on the notion that the contributions of women to computer programming were covered up in the past simply by looking up the Pentagon’s massive attempt to impose its Ada language on the programmers of the world. Back in the 1970s’s the Department of Defense wanted to radically reduce the number of programming languages in use by contractors, so it sponsored a new language, which it named after Lord Byron’s daughter. Ada was a huge deal when I took a course in programming in 1980. From Wikipedia (which, granted, is mostly written for free by men):

In May 1979, the Green proposal, designed by Jean Ichbiah at CII Honeywell Bull, was chosen and given the name Ada—after Augusta Ada, Countess of Lovelace. … The Military Standard reference manual was approved on December 10, 1980 (Ada Lovelace’s birthday), and given the number MIL-STD-1815 in honor of Ada Lovelace’s birth year. …

Ada attracted much attention from the programming community as a whole during its early days. Its backers and others predicted that it might become a dominant language for general purpose programming and not just defense-related work. Ichbiah publicly stated that within ten years, only two programming languages would remain, Ada and Lisp. Early Ada compilers struggled to implement the large, complex language, and both compile-time and run-time performance tended to be slow and tools primitive. …

In 1987, the US Department of Defense began to require the use of Ada (the Ada mandate) for every software project where new code was more than 30% of result, though exceptions to this rule were often granted. …

The Department of Defense Ada mandate was effectively removed in 1997, as the DoD began to embrace COTS (commercial off-the-shelf) technology.

You may recall Ada as another costly Pentagon boondoggle, but obviously your memories are poisoned by sexism.

Similarly, if you are of a certain age, you may recall how 1940s programmer Admiral Grace Hopper of COBOL fame was constantly feted in her old age with honors and promotions. Wikipedia lists 29 different honors bestowed upon her from 1969 onward, but that’s lumping together the more than 40 honorary degrees she received. But once again, the Wikipedia list was probably put together by some man for free, so it’s no doubt sexist.
