A suspect has been arrested in connection with the death of a woman in Lexington.

Police say 25-year-old Kevin Velasco-Gomez was arrested in Simpson County on a warrant for murder.

Police say officers responded Monday morning, around 10, to a home in the 2200 block of Alexandria Drive where a woman was found dead.

The coroner says that woman has been identified as 33-year-old Elaine Castillo.

Police say Velasco-Gomez is Castillo’s boyfriend.

Castillo’s death has neighbors in the area on edge.

“You don’t know if you’re sitting in your living room one night and you just hear two shots, it could come through your window, it could hit you, your kid, your family,” neighbor Austin Thomas said.

Velasco-Gomez is currently being held in the Warren County Detention Center.

A man charged with murder and first-degree sodomy is now being held in the Fayette County Detention Center in connection with the death of a 3-year-old girl.

Police said 33-year-old Andrew Charles Buster Jr. sexually assaulted Lillyann Grace Reck on Dec. 10, 2018. Police were called an apartment on Cross Keys Road when the toddler was unconscious. She later died at the hospital on Dec. 14, 2018, officials said.

Police said Buster was a family acquaintance who was watching Reck while her mother was at work. The case recently was determined to be a homicide by the medical examiner’s office. Police said new DNA evidence led to Buster’s arrest.

When first reporting on the incident back in 2018, LEX 18’s Leigh Searcy unknowingly spoke to Buster when knocking on apartment doors.

He told Searcy that he was the one who had been watching the girl. When Searcy asked what happened, Buster replied “Yea I know what happened to her but I can’t talk. I can’t talk about it.”

Police confirmed that was in fact Buster.

He appeared in court for a video arraignment on Tuesday afternoon. The judge appointed him a public defender and set bail a $1 million.

Three Georgetown men have been indicted on multiple charges in connection with the September shooting death of a 19-year-old in Lexington.

On Sept. 3, Nathaniel Shelby was found inside an East Reynolds Road apartment suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. He died of his injuries on Sept. 7.

Rafael Malik Brewster, 20, and Jah’Quez Crutchfield, 18, were both indicted on charges of murder, first-degree robbery and burglary, according to court records.

Moses Emmanuel Thompson, 18, was indicted on charges of complicity to first-degree robbery and complicity to burglary. He was initially also charged with facilitation to murder, but that charge was dismissed by a grand jury, according to court records.

The shooting happened after a drug transaction at a restaurant. The three men realized they were “shorted” on drugs and drove to Shelby’s apartment, police detective Brandon Gibbs said during a Sept. 20 preliminary hearing.

Thompson is accused of being the driver and was aware the robbery was going to occur, according to court records.

The three are scheduled to be arraigned in Fayette County Circuit Court on Nov. 27.

A man who was retried this month in the shooting death of a Marine in Lexington was found guilty on six counts Monday night, including charges of murder and robbery.

Dawan Mulazim, 36, was convicted in 2018 on charges related to a robbery at Quality Inn days before the shooting that killed Jonathan Price and injured his wife, Megan Price. The jury in the 2018 trial was unable to reach a verdict in the murder and robbery charges against Mulazim connected to the shooting of the Prices outside Austin City Saloon on June 21, 2014.

After six days of evidence and arguments, a new jury heard closing arguments Monday in the retrial of Mulazim on the charges connected to the robbery of the Prices. They deliberated about four and a half hours before returning multiple guilty verdicts.

Mulazim was found guilty of intentional murder, first-degree robbery and second-degree assault in the Austin City Saloon shooting. However, in each of the counts the jury could not determine if Mulazim was the “principal” offender or complicit. He was also found guilty of complicity to first-degree robbery in connection with the attack on the Prices. Mulazim is eligible for the death penalty on the convictions, his attorney told jurors Tuesday.

In a reported robbery on July 17, 2014 on Second Street, Mulazim was found guilty of two counts of receiving stolen property valued less than $500.

The family of Jonathan Price was visibly relieved when the verdicts were read, including Megan Price, who testified in both the 2018 trial and the retrial.

Lexington Police say they are looking for a man wanted in connection to a deadly shooting.

According to police, 21-year-old Jeremy Jovontae Jackson is believed to have shot 51-year-old Carroll Martin. They think that Martin and Jackson knew each other.

Lexington Police say officers were called to Florence Avenue around 9:15 a.m. on September 15, where they found Martin in the road with multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to a hospital where he died.

A man accused in the 2016 shooting death of a man on South Broadway was convicted of murder on Wednesday.

Leslie Lee Parson, 33, was found guilty by a jury in Fayette County Circuit Court in the shooting death of Jacob Skyler Ray, according to the commonwealth’s attorney’s office.

This weekend’s events in Charlottesville have changed everything.

The #UniteTheRight rally was intended to be an event protesting the removal of a historical monument. It was not allowed to happen, thanks to a criminal conspiracy by the city and state governments. The incident involving the car crash has not been fully investigated and there are still many questions surrounding it.

Mayor Jim Gray said Saturday he is taking steps to remove two controversial Confederate-era statues from the lawn of the former Fayette County Courthouse on Main Street.

Gray’s announcement came the same day as multiple people were killed and injured in Virginia after a vehicle drove into counter-protesters who had clashed with white nationalists around a Confederate-era statue in Charlottesville.

Gray said in a statement he will ask the Lexington-Fayette County Urban County Council at its Tuesday work session to take the first step — to ask a state military commission for permission to take down the statues of John Hunt Morgan and John C. Breckinridge. Gray said the vote was already in the works.

“We have thoroughly examined this issue, and heard from many of our citizens,” Gray said in a statement. “The tragic events in Charlottesville today have accelerated the announcement I intended to make next week.”

In Gainesville, Florida the removal of a Confederate monument has already begun.

Crews are removing a Confederate statue that was created as a memorial to men of the Gainesville area who lost their lives in the Civil War.

Work began Sunday to remove the statue in downtown Gainesville, known as “Old Joe.”

It will be moved Monday from outside the Alachua County Administrative Building and will be returned to the local chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, which erected the bronze statue in 1904.

County officials said they did not know what the Daughters of the Confederacy would do with the statue.

The Baltimore mayor is planning to move forward with removing Confederate symbols from the city.

After violence erupted in Charlottesville, Virginia over the weekend in response to the city’s plan to remove a Robert E. Lee statue from a park there, Mayor Catherine Pugh has renewed efforts to remove similar confederate imagery from Baltimore.

In Richmond, Virginia last night, people rioted against a statue.

Protesters screaming “take down the monuments” marched from a park in downtown Richmond to the beginning of historic Monument Avenue before surrounding the statue of J.E.B. Stuart and planting a flag in the mouth of the Confederate general’s horse Sunday night.

Richmond Police Chief Alfred Durham said officers responded to Abner Clay Park in Jackson Ward around 8:30 p.m. for an assembly.

Police followed the crowd and posted updates on social media that the group was moving down West Broad Street around 10:20 p.m.

Police said the demonstrators turned onto Lombardy Avenue and were headed for Monument Avenue as of 10:50 p.m. with the goal of reaching the statue of Gen. Robert E. Lee.

However, the group settled for the Stuart statue when Capitol Police said only 20 people could gather at the Lee monument.

“Tear the racist statues down,” the group yelled as one person attempted to climb the Stuart monument before nearly taking a spill and slipping down the statue.

The man, who was shirtless and wearing a mask, was successful on his second attempt. The crowd cheered as he walked back and forth before he successfully planted a flag on J.E.B. Stuart’s horse.

Pro-history forces are planning to hold a rally there soon. This will undoubtedly be one of many future rallies in support of Confederate monuments.

A Confederate heritage organization has asked the state for permission to gather Sept. 16 at Richmond’s Robert E. Lee monument.

The rally would come roughly a month after Saturday’s white nationalist protest descended into violence in Charlottesville.

The Department of General Services has received a request from Americans for Richmond Monument Preservation for a permit to hold an event at the Lee Monument on Monument Avenue, according to Dena Potter, an agency spokeswoman, who said the application is under review and has not been approved.

Potter said the request was submitted by Bragdon Bowling — a former commander of the Virginia Division, Sons of Confederate Veterans. Bowling could not immediately be reached for comment Sunday evening.

A Lexington man is in jail this morning in connection to a home invasion LEX 18 told you about last week.

The home invasion happened around 3:00 a.m. on Mother’s Day morning. Several people were inside a house on Suburban Court when four men broke in to burglarize the home. One man was injured badly enough to be transported to UK Hospital that morning. We’ve now learned the suspect was arrested, five days after the attack.

Lexington Police have charged Saquan Freeman, 18, with first degree burglary and seven counts of kidnapping. Authorities say freeman was armed with a deadly weapon when he held those seven people against their will. According to the arrest citation, Freeman was named as a suspect by someone who knows him. Police then connected him to the scene by clothing he was wearing during the attack. Police say later they found those articles of clothing inside the offenders house while executing a search warrant.

No one else has been charged.

Lexington police have made a second arrest arrest in the death of Jonathan Krueger, a junior at the University of Kentucky who was shot while walking home early Friday.

Krueger, 22, of Perrysburg, Ohio was killed about 2 a.m. during a robbery at Transylvania Park and East Maxwell Street. He died from a gunshot wound to the chest, according to the Fayette County Coroner.

Police arrested Efrain Diaz, 20, Friday evening and charged him with murder and robbery.

Police also arrested Justin D. Smith, 18, who has been charged with murder in the fatal shooting. In addition to murder, Smith also is charged with robbery, tampering with physical evidence and fleeing and evading stemming from a brief pursuit and standoff.

As police loaded Smith into a cruiser Friday evening, reporters asked whether he killed Krueger.

“No. Hell no,” Smith replied before heading to the Fayette County jail.

Diaz likewise maintained his innocence when reporters asked if he killed Krueger.

“No ma’am. I’m innocent, ma’am. I swear on my life I’m innocent,” he said. “I’ve never killed anybody in my life.”

Smith spent several hours being questioned in police headquarters Friday after police announced they had made an arrest in the case.

Police said they did not believe Krueger knew the two suspects before the robbery and shooting.

Lexington police Chief Mark Barnard, during a news conference earlier, said investigators caught Smith quickly, but the case is not closed. They are looking for other individuals who were involved. Barnard would not say how many others could be involved.

“We’ve updated the family on our investigation and our thoughts and prayers are with them,” Barnard said.

The chief said the investigation “moved so quickly” so there was a lot that they are still piecing together. The chief said he could not say much about the case, but he scheduled the news conference because police had received multiple calls from the community.

“It has been such a quick, fluid investigation that we are still actively working on it and investigators are out in the field, so I don’t want to jeopardize anything they’re doing or their safety,” Barnard said.

Barnard said his officers did well by making an arrest seven hours after the shooting. A large number of officers were working on the case, and he said they wanted to provide some sense of closure for Krueger’s family, but he realized that this doesn’t heal their wounds. Barnard said he spoke to Krueger’s father and he was, understandably, very upset.

A Kansas City man is in jail in St. Louis after allegedly shooting at vehicles and leading police on a pursuit Wednesday evening, according to KMOV.

Police said the pursuit began when officers got a call around 6 p.m. from someone who claimed the suspect was firing shots along Interstate 70.

KMOV reported that two people and at least five vehicles were hit by gunshots in the incident.

On Facebook, Linda Howard of Lexington, Mo., reports she was among those hit.

“All I heard was pop-pop- they shot my truck plus another another truck and car. I’m ok but they did shoot somebody in Warrenton, Mo.o. I 70 mm 197. Good news they got them,” her post says.
