The US Food and Drug Administration announced Tuesday that it will examine the potential harm to women of heavy metals such as lead and arsenic found in tampons.

The FDA’s action follows the July publication of a small pilot study that found arsenic and lead in organic and nonorganic tampons. Although the levels of both metals were low, there is no safe level of exposure to lead, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency.

The July study discovered only the presence of the metals and “did not test whether metals are released from tampons when used,” the FDA said in a statement Tuesday. “It also did not test for metals being released, absorbed into the vaginal lining, and getting into the bloodstream during tampon use. The FDA has therefore commissioned an independent literature review and initiated an internal bench laboratory study to evaluate metals in tampons.”

The FDA lab study will mimic normal use of tampons to see just how much — if any — metals may be released into the human body during their use. The literature review will examine all research in the area to shed light on the potential health impact of such exposure, the agency said.

Vaginal tissue is more permeable than other parts of the body, so if studies were to find that heavy metals — or worrisome chemicals — do leach from menstrual products into the body, it could be a significant problem, Anna Pollack, associate professor of global and community health at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, told CNN previously. She was not involved in the pilot study.

“I am most concerned with menstrual products that are used inside the body,” said Pollack, who coauthored a review of 10 years of studies on contaminants in tampons, sanitary pads, menstrual cups and other products.

The construction of a new Memorial Sloan Kettering cancer care facility on the Upper East Side might be exposing youngsters to carcinogens and other toxic materials, enraged parents say.

The planned 31-story cancer care pavilion on York Avenue between East 66th and 67th streets in Manhattan’s Lenox Hill neighborhood has stirred parents into a frenzy in recent weeks, sparking a Change.org petition claiming demolition – including asbestos and lead-based paint removal – will put nearby schoolchildren at risk of hazard exposure.

“The main point of the petition is to have an impartial third party monitoring the situation and assuring us that they’re doing what they need to,” Anat Rosenberg, co-founder of the grassroots organization behind the petition, told The Post.

Documents filed over two decades ago by MSK reveal the “potential for adverse impacts” during construction due to “the presence of chemical and radioactive products, hazardous waste, petroleum storage tanks, asbestos-containing materials, PCB-containing materials, and lead-based paint.

“Construction activities could disturb hazardous materials and increase pathways for human exposure,” the documents add.

An MSK rep told The Post that “most of the buildings from that time period have asbestos,” and the cancer center, which is estimated to be completed in 2030, is following all protocols required by the state and city to ensure safety in and around the site.

The Guardian and Consumer Reports investigated American tap water in 120 locations across the United States and found disturbing stuff in it.

• 117 of the 120 samples tested had PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances), toxic “forever chemicals” linked to infertility and other serious health problems. Furthermore, more than 35% of the samples had these chemicals in levels above Consumer Reports’ recommended maximum
• About 8% of the samples had arsenic levels above Consumer Reports’ recommended maximum
• 118 of the 120 samples had detectable levels of lead, and there is no safe exposure level of lead

PFAS have recently been on the news, with Shanna Swan, a professor of environmental medicine and public health at Mount Sinai’s Icahn School of Medicine in New York, warning that the world will be completely infertile by 2045 if we continue following current trends.

Both arsenic and lead are known to cause various health problems, but arsenic in particular is also linked to IQ reduction in children.

Tap water is making Americans sicker, dumber, and less fertile.

It is also making men more like women, and women more like men.

This, combined with plastic pollution, are actual threats to the planet and to humanity. But the likes of Greta Thunberg focus on made-up things like climate change, that have no measurable effect on people’s health.
