An Italian prosecutor on Saturday asked a judge to sentence right-wing League leader Matteo Salvini to six years in prison over his 2019 decision to prevent more than 100 migrants from landing in the country.

The then interior minister, who is currently serving as deputy prime minister and transport minister in Giorgia Meloni’s government, has been charged with kidnapping and is awaiting sentencing following his decision that left the migrants stranded at sea.

Prosecutors had then ordered the seizure of their ship and the evacuation of the people on board.

The bans didn’t even do much

On Saturday, the prosecutor asked for Salvini’s imprisonment at a hearing in the Sicilian capital of Palermo. The final decision rests with a senior judge at the end of a three-stage judicial process.

A definitive conviction could bar Salvini from holding government office.

“I would do it all again: defending borders from illegal immigrants is not a crime,” Salvini said in a post on X on Saturday.

During his 14 months as interior minister, Salvini stopped several boats from docking in Italy in an effort to halt migrant flows. He regularly accused migrant rescue charities of effectively encouraging people smuggling.

He sure didn’t solve any problem and one could argue he didn’t really even try.

But just saying you want to solve a problem is illegal under democracy law.

The European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, has visited a migrant reception centre on the Italian island of Lampedusa, after the country’s prime minister called for EU help with small boat arrivals.

But she still won’t stop the boats.

No one knows why.

Ms von der Leyen acknowledged on Sunday that the issue was “a European challenge and needs a European answer”.

At a news conference with Ms Meloni, she praised the people of Lampedusa for the support they had given to migrants, who she said had arrived on the island “simply because of its location”.

She pledged to increase support to transfer migrants out of Lampedusa as well as stepping up efforts against people smugglers who enabled dangerous and illegal journeys.

It’s hard because Libya doesn’t have a government.

They used to have a government, but something happened to it. I don’t remember the details.

The problem could not be solved by Italy alone, Ms Meloni said. It was currently affecting “the borders, the frontier countries” but would soon involve all of the EU states, she said.

“The future of Europe depends on its ability to tackle epoch-making challenges of our time and the challenge of illegal immigration is for sure one of them.”

Nearly 126,000 migrants have arrived in Italy so far this year, which is about double the number for the same period in 2022.

Ms Meloni said on Saturday that she was calling on Ms von der Leyen “to personally realize the gravity of the situation we face” and to “immediately accelerate” the implementation of an agreement with Tunisia.

The North African country has become the main departure point for African migrants attempting to reach Europe.

This is way more extreme than the 2015 crisis, for people who don’t get that. It’s just that it’s now so normal, it doesn’t really get talked about.

The Mediterranean island of Lampedusa is a first point of arrival for people seeking asylum or looking to keep moving north to other European countries.

A flotilla of flimsy boats, crowded with migrants and launched from Tunisia, overwhelmed a tiny southern Italian island on Wednesday, taxing the coast guard’s capability to intercept the smugglers’ vessels and sorely testing Premier Giorgia Meloni’s pledge to thwart illegal migration.

Compounding the political pressure on Italy’s first far-right leader were vows by France and Germany to rebuff migrants who arrive by sea on Italian shores, and in defiance of European Union asylum system rules, head northward to try to find jobs or relatives in those and other northern countries on the continent.

Starting early on Tuesday, the unseaworthy, unstable iron boats came one after the other in what appeared to be almost a procession to onlookers on Lampedusa, a fishing and tourist island south of Sicily.

Some 6,800 migrants came in a span of just over 24 hours, a number that is a few hundred higher than the isle’s full-time population.

Provoking the surge in numbers was a bottleneck in Tunisia’s ports of several days caused by rough seas that meant the smugglers couldn’t launch their boats, according to Italian authorities.

With the island’s sole migrant residence having a capacity of about 450 beds, authorities scrambled to transfer the migrants via commercial ferries or a coast guard ship to Sicily, or Calabria in the southern toes of the Italian mainland.

Francesca Basile, a spokeswoman for the Italian Red Cross on Lampedusa, said they were making a “huge effort” to provide “basic services” for the 6,000 migrants at the centre on Lampedusa.

According to Italy’s Interior Ministry, over 120,000 migrants have arrived in Italy this year by sea, among them were over 11,000 unaccompanied minors.

There’s no way that’s a real number.

If we just add up the numbers in previous news reports, we’re going to get at least twice that number.

The Italian island of Lampedusa saw a record-breaking number of migrant boats land this weekend, with 50 landings taking place within the space of just 24 hours.

The number of boat landings exceeds the previous record of 36 landings in a 24-hour period. At one point, an estimated 11 migrant boats arrive in the span of a single hour as the island, which lies between Tunisia and Sicily, again became overwhelmed.

Combined with migrant arrivals on the islands of Pantelleria and Marettimo, a total of around 2,000 migrants arrived illegally on Italian territory within a single day, the newspaper Il Giornale reports.

As a result of the landings, the migrant centre in Lampedusa, which is built to accommodate just 350 people, now hosts over 1,500. Authorities are trying to quickly transfer migrants to other areas to prevent living conditions from deteriorating.

Last year, Lampedusa saw around 35,000 migrants arrive. It is home to just 6,500 people normally.

Lampedusa is not the only island to be overwhelmed with arrivals. Pantelleria received nearly 400 migrants despite only having space for a hundred people, according to mayor Vincenzo Campo.

“I ask, since this is a European emergency, greater collaboration with other mayors of Trapani and Sicily to find a structure that can be more suitable. I also call for transfers to be carried out more quickly. We are in great difficulty and we need immediate intervention,” Mayor Campo said.

The month of July saw more illegal immigrants arrive in Italian territory than the entire year of 2019, as landing continue in areas like the overwhelmed island of Lampedusa.

In 2019, just 11,471 migrants arrived in Italy during the entire year but statistics from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) have revealed that in the month of July alone a total of 13,197 migrants landed, the highest monthly arrival rate since June of 2017.

Populist Matteo Salvini, leader of the League, commented on the data saying, “In July of this year we exceeded the landings recorded throughout 2019. We can’t wait to return to the government to take care of work, security, and defence of Italy,” the newspaper Il Giornale reports.

“We need a minister ready to defend the borders, we owe it out of respect for Italians in difficulty,” Salvini later added.

Salvini served as Interior Minister of Italy for much of 2019 until his party’s coalition with the Five star Movement (M5S) collapsed and he resigned from his post in September.

During his time as Interior Minister, however, Salvini was credited for greatly reducing illegal arrivals as well as subsequent drowning deaths in the Mediterranean, which numbered 754 in 2019 and have risen every year since according to the UNHCR.

On Monday, the migrant taxi ship Ocean Viking dropped off nearly 400 migrants in the port of Salerno, while the ship Sea Watch 3 was able to disembark a further 438 migrants in Taranto over the weekend. Another ship, the Geo Barents, was waiting to drop off 659 migrants as of Monday.

They’re all going to end up in the UK and Germany anyway.

I don’t even know why Italy cares at this point. If Germany and Britain want all these people coming in, Italy should just traffic them directly across the border.

The prefect of the Sicilian city of Agrigento on December 23 warned that a record 35,000 migrants landed on the island of Lampedusa in 2021, compared to nearly 20,000 in 2020. The island’s hotspot has currently reached its capacity limit, the prefect warned.

Meanwhile, the Sicilian judicial authorities seized the ship operated by the Berlin organization Sea-Watch, because too many life jackets were found on board. The sewage system on board is not designed for such a large number of people. The Sea-Watch 4 recently took hundreds of migrant boats on board. The crew had previously also been criticized for hoisting an Antifa flag.

The number of migrants coming to Italy across the Mediterranean rose sharply in the first four months of 2021 compared to previous years. As of May 10, the Ministry of the Interior in Rome registered almost 13 000 arrivals. In the previous year there were around 4 200 in this period, and two years ago it was around 1000.

Il Giornale recently interviewed an Italian woman who has a farm there, where she used to raise pigs, sheep and chickens. But not any more.

In 2018 Rosy filed a complaint with the carabinieri: she had 25 chickens, but they have eaten them all. They didn’t touch the pigs, however, because Muslims don’t eat swine flesh.

In this video, she shows the journalists around her farm, including the mess left by the invaders.

And they have harassed her daughter.

Some time ago, as if that wasn’t enough, a deplorable incident was verified that involved her 14-year-old daughter while she was collecting fresh grass for the pigs. “12 of them came out from behind a bush. They were Tunisians. Drunk. She was afraid. They winked at her. They wanted to offer her cannabis. One of them took his trousers down. In front of my daughter.”

This case was raised on an Italian TV discussion program recently. The commentators actually laughed at the woman’s experience, mocking her as a xenophobic oik: “Oh, the immigrants ate my dogs!” You can pick up on the body language even if you don’t understand Italian.

Italy should either defend Lampedusa using draconian military measures (shooting and sinking any invader boats that turn up) or give it up entirely. At this point it’s simply an open door, inviting the endless hordes of Africa to an easy invasion of Europe.

Locals on the Italian island of Lampedusa have participated in a referendum calling for an end to new illegal migrant landings.

The referendum was called two weeks ago and saw the majority of participants, some 988 people, vote to close the migrant “hotspot” centre, with only four people voting to keep the centre’s doors open.

A committee of local citizens released a statement saying: “For 30 years, in the face of the continuous violation of the most essential rights for the population and for immigrants, Lampedusa has been used as a military management platform for migration.”

“All this with the complicity of local administrations and through a moral and economic blackmailing strategy, to the detriment of the local population,” the locals added, according to an Il Giornale report.

I’m gonna assume those 4 people were all either childless women or nonwhite invaders themselves.

Also, notice how one-sided the whole thing was, as opposed to the kosher media’s line that people are “divided” on the issue.

There is no such division in reality.

There is no country in Europe, not even Sweden, where a referendum to reduce immigration to ZERO wouldn’t pass by a wide margin. That’s why it’s never happened.

Almost any right-wing government anywhere in the formerly-Western world to be elected in the past 20 years or so was voted in primarily for the promise of lowering immigration, and virtually every single one of them just spontaneously changed their minds for no reason after they won power.

Because when there are no real consequences for gaining power by lying, then your vote doesn’t really matter, and even when you get someone in power who at least tries to stick to what he said, there’s an amorphous blob of bureaucrats and judges to make sure nothing ever gets done. Hence, Donald Trump, the supposedly most powerful man in the world, literally can’t even build a hecking fence in his own hecking country.

The results of the referendum come as another 43 migrants were transported to the island by the migrant transport NGO Mediterranea Saving Humans over the weekend. The Germany-based NGO Sea-Watch has also launched a new reconnaissance plane named Seabird from Lampedusa, as well, to search for migrant boats in the Mediterranean.

“It is not our intention to ignore the seriousness of the migration problem. However, we believe that, starting from the claim of the rights and serenity for the Lampedusians and Lampedusa, we can begin a process of questioning the entire governance of migration,” the Lampedusians said.

As the Wuhan coronavirus lockdown measures in Italy ease, the country has seen a surge in new migrant numbers from both the Mediterranean and the Balkan route over the border with Slovenia.

Many are also concerned that migrants could bring new cases of coronavirus to Italy as well, as was the case just days ago when it was revealed at least 28 migrants transported to Italy by the NGO Sea-eye were infected with the Chinese disease.

There are more invaders coming in right now than a couple of months ago, but even then they were still coming.

Migrants flowing into Europe by boat from Africa this year are expected to exceed 100,000 by mid-August, officials have said.

Nearly 91,000 people have reached Italy by sea since the start of the year, already close to the record-high of 92,000 arrivals in 2011.

It came as another 2,500 arrived in Italy in the last 24 hours after being rescued by the navy and coastguard while crossing the Mediterranean.

Around 1,000 people were brought by the coastguard into the southern port of Reggio Calabria.

Another 958 migrants arrived in the Sicilian town of Pozzallo on board a navy vessel, while over 500 people reached the city of Palermo.

Most of them are Egyptians, Pakistanis, Eritreans, Syrians and Somalis, the authorities said.

Italy’s navy and coast guard have been patrolling the Mediterranean Sea since last October as part of an EU-funded search-and-rescue mission called ‘Mare Nostrum’ (Our Sea).

But overwhelmed by the numbers, the country is increasingly waiving European rules to fingerprint migrants, allowing them to move on.

Many are then heading to Britain via Calais, where the unprecedented influx is causing a tense summer as clashes break out among asylum-seekers in overcrowded camps.

Sudanese and Eritreans have battled in the heat in France’s port city, with frustrations rising as the Africans jockey for space while trying to sneak into Britain – the dream destination some 30 kilometers (20 miles) away.

British police have been on site trying to make sure they don’t cross over.

Their French counterparts fired tear gas on Tuesday to break up the latest battles that left dozens injured, one seriously, the Calais prefecture said.
