Rescuers are frantically searching Kangaroo Island for injured animals amid fears over half of its 50,000 koala population perished in Friday’s devastating bushfire.

Thousands of charred bodies of native animals were littered across the West End Highway, including wallabies and koalas, after the animals tried to escape the inferno at Flinders Chase National Park.

Sam Mitchell, Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park co-owner, said his team is rescuing survivors as quickly as possible ahead of worsening conditions in the coming days.

‘There is no food left, for those (animals) who didn’t perish in the fire, a lot of them will starve to death,’ he told The Advertiser.

Mr Mitchell said the island has ‘gone from one extreme to the other’, recalling suggestions the island’s koalas should be culled in past years.

‘People would talk about koalas being a pest species … but now there are a lot of koalas (which) perished in the fires,’ he said.

Mr Mitchell said it could take years for the native wildlife to recover.

A GoFundMe page set up to treat injured animals in the park has raised over $155,000.

Fireman Rick Fisher said many of the survivors were orphaned infants who approached him looking for comfort.

Several had to be put down because serious injuries, either burns or respiratory.

Mr Fisher said he watched as the flames tore through nearby plantations.

‘You can only find the injured koalas on the edge of the plantation, All the ones inside the ground would have been killed instantly,’ he said.

Meanwhile, a total fire ban has been declared across Kangaroo Island as Country Fire Service crews race to quell areas still burning ahead of deteriorating conditions this week.

Cooler weather and some rain across the fireground on Saturday and Sunday brought some relief with the focus of locals shifting towards damage assessment and recovery.

But authorities imposed the fire ban for Monday as temperatures across SA were forecast to push into the mid to high 30s by Wednesday.

An American model has raised more than NZ$750,000 for the Australian bushfire victims by promising to send nude selfies to those who donate.

Los Angeles woman Kaylen Ward decided to do what she could to help the relief efforts by encouraging followers to donate at least $10 in exchange for an X-rated image of herself.

“Every $10 you donate = one nude picture from me to your DM. You must send me confirmation that you donated,” the 20-year-old wrote on Twitter.

Within minutes, her private messages on Instagram and Twitter were bombarded by hundreds of people sending in their receipts to prove they had donated.

Her post has received more than 123,000 likes, 56,000 retweets and thousands of comments.

Ward said she was motivated to use her following to contribute to the cause after photos surfaced of the catastrophic conditions.

“It’s devastating and any normal person would be concerned and want to help,” she said.

In her post, she asked followers to donate directly to a list of numerous charities including NSW Rural Fire Service, Victorian Country Fire Service, Red Cross and certain koala hospitals across Australia.

Despite the enormous effort from Ward and her fans, the stunt has implications for her career as an Instagram model, with the company disabling her account for violating community guidelines.

“My IG [Instagram] got deleted, my family disowned me, and the guy I like won’t talk to me all because of that tweet,” she posted on Sunday.

“But f**k it, save the koalas.”

“Guys I am crying, this is f***king crazy”.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that this will not negatively affect her “career” as an internet slut.

It will in fact be great for her slut career.

There is something interesting to analyze here, what with the tying of morality (global warming is the ultimate morality, and this fire is supposedly somehow related to global warming, and “donating to a cause” is also the definition of moral goodness) to pornography.

I don’t feel I have the energy to analyze it just now, however.

The man pays his ten dollars of fiat currency, vaguely aroused by the idea that for less than an hour’s labour he has effectively entered into a transaction for this young woman whom he does not know to expose herself to him, an act that in traditional societies would probably mean his death, hers, or both. He’s happy that the money is going to a good cause anyway, even though under the fiat currency scheme the Australian government could easily print up the required currency to pay for any rescue operations needed.

The young woman is high on the idea of her only social worth, her sexuality, being prized so highly in such a public way, and being able to cover this obvious act of female narcissism and signalling social status to her peers (sexual rivals) with the cover of it being an act of public good, a selfless act for others. Others, however, particularly the man whom she desired, are troubled by the fact that this woman places her most valuable asset, her female modesty/sexuality, at only ten dollars, as while only her representation has been exchanged in this transaction, the social implications are the same.

Seems to sum things up pretty well.

Devastating bushfires are believed to have incinerated as many as 8,000 koalas on Australia’s east coast.

Australia’s federal environment minister Sussan Ley said the bushfire-ravaged mid-north coast in New South Wales, home to as many as 28,000 koalas, may have lost 30 per cent of the species’ local population in recent months.

This “burnt koala” is quickly becoming the “drowned child refugee” of climate change.

People all around the first world are causing the Koala Holocaust by turning on their air conditioners and driving around in their cars.

Greta Thunberg herself has come out and claimed that white people changing the climate are responsible for the Australian bushfires, which means that white people are responsible for the death of thousands of innocent koalas.

The estimate comes after wildlife experts warned the unprecedented blazes have threatened the koala with extinction.

‘We’ll know more when the fires are calmed down and a proper assessment can be made,’ Ms Ley told ABC’s AM radio show.

Earlier this year before the bushfire crisis took hold, the Australian Koala Foundation (AKF) estimated there were only 80,000 koalas left nationally.

The minister said the one-in-three estimate was made on the basis that a third of the local koala population’s habitat had been destroyed.

She added a $6million budget was in place to release the surviving koalas from the region’s hospitals.

The Australian Koala Foundation has said koalas are ‘functionally extinct’ – which refers to when a species is too small to sustain its population into future generations.

University of Sydney professor of ecology Chris Dickman estimated 480million mammals, birds and reptiles had been killed, directly or indirectly, by the flames.

He added the koalas rescued from the fires would struggle – regardless of whether they were kept in captivity or released back into the wild.

The destruction of koala habitats meant the marsupials would, most likely, struggle to reproduce in coming generations, especially in areas of NSW that had been singed.

Making matters worse, the bushfires since November had burnt through the best koala habitat in northern NSW, where the soil was more fertile.

‘Almost certainly, a lot of koalas would have been killed directly by the flames and probably indirectly by a combination of starvation, being picked off by dogs, even for the ones that survived.’

Koalas would also struggle being kept in captivity.

Koala is sad.

Federal Environment Minister Sussan Ley said that meant the marsupials rescued from the bushfires could not be relocated to another area of bushland.

‘The next, most difficult thing is how to reintroduce them into their habitat,’ she told Sydney radio 2GB broadcaster John Stanley on Friday.

‘You can’t pick up a koala that’s lived for several generations in one area and move it even 50km away.

‘It needs the same area, the same type of trees, and it really is quite a complicated exercise – they’re not the easiest creatures to adapt to different circumstances.’

As a result, koalas are likely to be kept in capacity until their burnt-out habitat had regenerated.

Earlier this month, Nature Conservation Council ecologist Mark Graham said that fires burning around New South Wales have razed koala habitats so extensively ‘we will probably never find the bodies’.

‘We’ve lost such a massive swathe of known koala habitat that I think we can say without any doubt there will be ongoing declines in koala populations from this point forward,’ he said.

You have globally warmed koalas so much that they burned to death, yet you’re still here, reading this from your screen as if you were incapable of changing your climate-changing ways.

You disappointed koala.
