A jury on Thursday convicted a Racine man of first-degree intentional homicide in the shooting death of a Wheatland man, dismissing his lawyer’s argument for a lesser charge.

There was no dispute at the trial of Markeith Wilson that he was part of a crew of four people who went to Joe Riley’s home intending to rob him, their actions setting off a gunfight that ended with Riley dead and his friend critically injured.

In closing arguments Thursday, Wilson’s attorney Brian Dimmer acknowledged that the jury had evidence to convict his client of conspiracy to commit robbery and armed burglary.

But the state argued that Wilson, 21, was also guilty of first-degree intentional homicide and first-degree attempted homicide as a party to the crime because Riley’s death and the injuries to his friend Eva Lofton were a consequence of the robbery.

However, Dimmer argued that Wilson, who evidence shows likely did not fire his weapon, should have been convicted of a lesser charge of felony murder.

The jury found Wilson guilty on all the charges against him. His sentencing is set for Jan. 9, when he could be sentenced to life plus an additional 120 years.

We don’t put wild animals on trial when they kill a human – we just put them down.

Anthony Harris II was found competent Tuesday to stand trial for the shooting death of Salem Lakes resident Joseph Riley.

Harris, 24, of Racine, is one of four people charged in the home invasion homicide at Riley’s home last November.

At a hearing Tuesday, attorneys for the defense and state agreed that a psychiatrist’s evaluation of Harris found that he was mentally competent to stand trial.

He is now scheduled to go to trial Jan. 21.

Also charged with Riley’s murder are Markeith Wilson, 20, Demarco Hudson, 19, and Augustine Sanchez, 21, all of Racine.

The four men are alleged to have targeted Riley for a robbery, three of the men allegedly breaking into his home.

When Riley grabbed a gun, he and the men exchanged fire. Riley was killed and a friend at his home was critically injured.

Hudson and Wilson were both shot in the exchange of gunfire.

Unsurprisingly, drugs were involved.

Friends and family members gathered Saturday, Nov. 17 to remember a 23-year-old killed in the Town of Wheatland. He was shot Thursday, Nov. 15 and three others were wounded.

In New Munster Park, the sadness was overwhelming. Loved ones leaned on each other, remembering a young life taken suddenly.

The Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department said four suspects arrested in this case kicked in the door to a home in the Town of Wheatland and got into a shootout with the people inside.

Sheriff’s officials identified the suspects as Anthony Harris II, 23, Augustine Sanchez, 20, Markeith Wilson, 20 and Demarco Hudson, 17. It was announced that Wilson and Hudson were in custody Friday. The other two arrests were announced on Sunday.

Riley did not survive the shooting.

Investigators said it’s believed drugs were the motivation behind the shooting.
