Students at Hosei University in Tokyo recounted how screams suddenly punctuated the quiet of a lecture hall after a classmate went on a rampage by swinging a hammer at those seated close by.

The incident on Jan. 10 at the Tama Campus in western Tokyo left eight students injured, but none was in a critical condition.

A 22-year-old student from South Korea was arrested on the campus in Machida city.

“I got frustrated,” she reportedly told investigators.

The incident occurred in a large lecture hall capable of holding about 100 students on the second floor of a Faculty of Social Sciences building.

A 20-year-old student of the faculty recalled she was in the lecture hall shortly before 4 p.m. when she heard a scream from the back of the room.

Turning around, she saw students scrambling to flee. One had blood pouring down her face.

Not understanding what had transpired, the 20-year-old also ran toward the front of the classroom. When she turned around again, she saw a classmate holding a hammer measuring about 30 centimeters in length.

“I was so shocked that such a thing could happen during a university lecture,” the student said. “I was so scared my hands were shaking for quite some time.”

A 20-year-old student in the Faculty of Social Policy and Administration was sitting in the fifth row from the back of the lecture hall.

He heard a dull sound and thought that perhaps someone had been punched and a fight was about to start. When he turned around, he saw the attacker swinging a hammer and hitting students on their heads.

“I always thought that scary incidents shown on TV news would never occur near me, but I now know it can happen to anyone,” he said.

A third-year student in his 20s said the perpetrator showed no expression during the attacks. When the hammer slipped from her hand, she started slapping others with her bare hand and hurled her mobile phone to the floor.

Denmark released anti-whaling activist Paul Watson from detention on Tuesday and said it had rejected a Japanese request to extradite him over criminal charges dating back more than a decade.

U.S.-Canadian Watson, 74, founder of the Sea Shepherd conservationist group and the Captain Paul Watson Foundation, was released in Greenland’s capital Nuuk, police in the autonomous Danish territory said.

Watson was apprehended when his ship docked in Greenland in July.

“I’m certainly relieved, especially since it allows me to get home to my children before Christmas,” Paul Watson told Reuters after his release on Tuesday.

The Fukuoka High Court on Friday became the third high court in Japan to rule the country’s lack of legal recognition of same-sex marriage is unconstitutional, but upheld a lower court ruling to dismiss plaintiffs’ claim for damages.

In the ruling, the court judged for the first time that civil law provisions not allowing same-sex marriage violated Article 13 of the Constitution, which guarantees the right to the pursuit of happiness.

The court also said the ban violates sections of the Constitution that guarantee equality under the law and upholds individual dignity and the essential equality of both sexes.

“There is no longer any reason to not legally recognize marriage between same-sex couples,” Presiding Judge Takeshi Okada said.

After the ruling, four of the plaintiffs stood outside the court and held up a sign questioning why Japan’s parliament has yet to legalize same-sex marriage.

At a press conference, a 35-year-old plaintiff going by the name Kosuke hailed the court’s ruling on Article 13, saying it “changes society’s atmosphere toward same-sex marriage.” He described being unable to stop crying as the judge spoke.

His partner, a 37-year-old referring to himself as Masahiro, said the ruling “understood our suffering, and I felt very reassured.”

The ruling contrasted with the decision by the lower court last year saying that the ban is in a “state of unconstitutionality” — a term seen as a call for the Diet to address the law’s inconsistency with the Constitution.

Three same-sex couples from Fukuoka and Kumamoto in southwestern Japan had asked for 1 million yen ($6,540) for each person. They argued that civil law provisions not allowing same-sex marriage violate the right to equality under the Constitution and its guarantee of the freedom of marriage.

But a new survey of Japanese high school students has revealed that four out of five 15-18-year-old boys have yet to reach the milestone.

And things aren’t looking much different for the girls, with just over one in four female high schoolers having had their first kiss.

These are the lowest figures recorded since Japan first began asking teenagers about their sexual habits back in 1974 – and are likely to be a worry in a country with one of the world’s lowest birth rates.

The study by the Japan Association for Sex Education (Jase) quizzed 12,562 students across junior high schools, high schools and university – asking them about everything from kisses to sexual intercourse.

The survey takes place every six years, and has been recording a fall in first kisses since 2005 – when the figure was closer to one in two.

But this year’s report found kissing was not the only area which had seen a fall in numbers. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it also revealed a drop in the numbers of Japanese youth having sexual intercourse.

According to the study, the ratio of high school boys who say they have had sexual intercourse fell 3.5 points from 2017 to 12%. For high school girls, it declined 5.3 points to 14.8%.

Experts have pointed to the impact of the Covid pandemic as one possible reason for the drop.

School closures and restrictions on physical contact during the Covid pandemic had likely impacted many of these students, as it happened “at a sensitive time when [they were] beginning to become interested in sexuality”, according to Yusuke Hayashi, a sociology professor at Musashi University quoted in the Mainichi newspaper.

However, the survey did find one area of increase: the number of teenagers admitting to masturbation across all demographics was at record high levels.

The results come after a separate survey earlier this year found that nearly half of marriages in Japan are sexless.

The most recent targets have been Ken Akamatsu’s “Manga Library Z”, a website which hosted old and out of print manga as a method of archival and ad-revenue sharing with artists, as well as Melon Books, a Japanese book retailer.

Manga Library Z is being shut down entirely, unlike most websites targeted by payment processors, this time even Japanese credit card companies joined in according to Akamatsu.

After the credit card companies pulled out, the only active form of payment processing left to them was BitCash, which couldn’t sustain the site.

The decision payment processors made came after an ultimatum which criticized Manga Library Z’s “handling of adult content” on the site. Similar ultimatums have forced sites such as Pixiv and even Patreon in the west to harshly censor or restrict access to content based on geographical location.

A Japanese high court ruled Wednesday that the country’s lack of legal recognition for same-sex marriage violates the right to equality under the Constitution, saying the ban leads to discriminatory treatment of people based on sexual orientation.

But the Tokyo High Court upheld a lower court ruling rejecting a demand by plaintiffs for the state to pay damages, citing the lack of a decision by the Supreme Court. It became the second high court to rule that the ban is unconstitutional.

The court also ruled that the marriage ban violates the section of the Constitution that says laws concerning matters pertaining to marriage and family “shall be enacted from the standpoint of individual dignity and the essential equality of the sexes.”

Current civil law provisions “are not based on reasonable grounds” and lead to “discriminatory treatment (of people) based on their sexual orientation,” according to the ruling.

Presiding Judge Sonoe Taniguchi acknowledged that recognition of a person’s right to a spousal relationship with a partner should be respected as an “important legal interest” for all including those in same-sex relationships.

“The degree of social acceptance for granting (same-sex couples) the same protection as heterosexuals has heightened considerably,” she said.

In dismissing the damages claim by the seven plaintiffs, Taniguchi said that since the Supreme Court has yet to rule on the issue, the court cannot find the government liable to compensate for the Diet’s failure to take legislative action.

The seven plaintiffs, including same-sex couples, had demanded 1 million yen ($6,500) each from the state. They argued that civil law provisions not allowing same-sex marriage violate the right to equality under the Constitution and its guarantee of the freedom of marriage.

Article 24 of the Constitution that guarantees the freedom of marriage stipulates, “Marriage shall be based only on the mutual consent of both sexes.”

Some of the plaintiffs and their supporters expressed joy after the ruling.

“The presiding judge’s words flowed into my head and I realized that the judge took our arguments to heart. I am happy to be here today,” said Chizuka Oe, one the plaintiffs.

Record-high 314 women filed their candidacy Tuesday for the upcoming general election, while hereditary politics continued to play a large role within the ruling Liberal Democratic Party.

The number of female candidates for the Oct 27 House of Representatives election was up from the previous record of 229 in the 2009 lower house poll, as both the LDP and the main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan ramped up their support for them.

The percentage of women among all candidates rose 5.7 points from the last election in 2021 to 23.4 percent.

The figures came as a recent report by the World Economic Forum found that Japan ranked 118th among 146 countries in the gender gap rankings in 2024, the lowest among the Group of Seven industrialized nations.
