It really should fall on the parents, not the government, to regulate the social media use of the kids.

That is to say: the government shouldn’t have to pass a law forcing the parents to regulate their children’s social media use. If the parents are not already stopping their kids from using social media, why would a law requiring them to consider doing that cause them to do that?

Regardless, this law is well within the rights of Ohio. And it’s very interesting that these social media companies consider people under the age of 16 to be an important demographic for their data collection and advertisement schemes.

A trade group representing some of the largest social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and X is suing Ohio after the state enacted a law that requires children under the age of 16 to get their parents’ consent before opening an account.

The NetChoice trade group wants the US District Court for the Southern District of Ohio to strike down the Social Media Parental Notification Act, which was passed last summer.

The law, which goes into effect on Jan. 15, was championed by Lt. Gov. Jon Husted following the tragic death of James Woods, a 17-year-old from Streetsboro, Ohio, who committed suicide in November 2022 after he fell victim to a sextortion plot online.

“This lawsuit is cowardly but not unexpected,” Husted, a Republican, said in a statement.

Not sure it’s “cowardly.”

In fact, it seems very bold.

NetChoice’s complaint claimed that requiring minors to get permission before they can sign up for social media and gaming apps is unconstitutional. The suit alleges the law impedes free speech, is overbroad and vague.

The group has won lawsuits against similar restrictions in California and Arkansas.

Husted, who leads Ohio’s technology initiatives, refuted those assertions.

“In filing this lawsuit, these companies are determined to go around parents to expose children to harmful content and addict them to their platforms,” Husted said.

Here’s the law, for anyone interested.

Again, parents have abdicated most of their responsibilities. American parents would rather focus on themselves than their children, which is a bizarre inversion of the order of nature.

But the law is legal, and the revelation that this under-16 audience is important to these companies is very interesting.

In an effort to protect minors from accessing online pornography, Louisiana lawmakers have enacted a new law requiring age verification on adult websites.

Act No. 440, which went into effect on Jan. 1, will now require residents of the Bayou State to provide proof of their age with a government-issued ID or digital ID card before accessing online pornographic websites.

The act states that pornography is a public health crisis for younger viewers, citing that it “contributes to the hyper sexualization of teens and prepubescent children and may lead to low self-esteem, body image disorders, an increase in problematic sexual activity at younger ages and increased desire among adolescents to engage in risky sexual behavior.”

Pornographic sites will have to determine whether a viewer is 18 or over or be at risk of possible lawsuits by the state.

Websites with content containing at least 33.3% pornographic material must now implement age verification.

Content such as “pubic hair, anus, vulva, genitals, or nipple of the female breast” are just some of the basic materials that are considered harmful to minors, the act states.

Pornhub, one of the internet’s largest online pornography sites, has already enacted an identity verification page before entering its site in Louisiana, Vice reported.

“Louisiana law now requires us to put in place a process for verifying the age of users who connect to our site from Louisiana,” a prompt reads on Pornhub’s verification page.

Pornhub’s verification page then requires users to verify their age via an app containing a digital copy of their driver’s licenses.

Louisiana Rep. Laurie Schlegel boasted on Twitter last week about the importance of the law passing, writing, “This bill is about protecting children not limiting adults.”

Overall, it’s a good thing that there is any pushback at all.

Men partial to perusing a lot of X-rated material are more likely to suffer erectile dysfunction — and it’s because they are so used to looking at kinky images, experts suggest.And those men who prefer watching their fantasies played out on screen are also less likely to enjoy actually having sex, the study showed.

While experts quizzed both men and women on their porn-watching habits, they only found a link to sexual dysfunction in men.

Researchers surveyed more than 300 men between 20 and 40 who visited a San Diego urology clinic for treatment.

While only 3.4 percent said they would rather masturbate and watch porn than have sex, there was a statistical link between the amount of porn they watched and sexual dysfunction.

Most of those men quizzed admitted to watching porn.

One in four said they watched porn less than once a week, while 21.3 percent said they watched porn three to five times a week.

Five percent admitted to watching porn six to 10 times a week and 4.3 percent said they indulged more than 11 times per week.

Dr. Joseph Alukal, an associate professor of urology and director of male reproductive health at New York University, said: “Visual stimulation will often increase sexual arousal in both men and women.”

“But when the majority of their time is spent viewing and masturbating to pornography, it is likely they will become less interested in real-world sexual encounters.”

“These studies suggest the issue may be trivial in women, but not so for men, and could lead to sexual dysfunction.”

Dr. Matthew Christman, a staff urologist with the Naval Medical Center in San Diego, told HealthDay the reason porn addicts are at greater risk of erectile dysfunction is that their “tolerance” for sexual stimulation is higher.

Note that this was merely a survey. A man in his 20s or 30s will naturally be reluctant to admit he is having erection problems even to a doctor, so you can bet the problem is much worse than these results suggest.

One of the researchers involved in this study, Joseph Alukal, is going to give a talk at a urology conference about the matter. A 12-year-old boy tried to re-enact scenes from a porn film he watched in school on the internet by raping his younger sister, a court heard.

The schoolboy searched for the hardcore films with a classmate – before going home to copy what he had seen.

The boy admitted three charges of rape when he appeared before Newport Crown Court yesterday.

Judge Thomas Crowther QC said: ‘It’s a sad fact that many boys of his age will have been exposed to adult pornography.
