Hundreds of thousands of Eastern European immigrants came into Britain uncounted because inspectors were at the wrong airports, officials admitted yesterday.

A damning report reveals that 350,000 people arrived unnoticed because of glaring gaps in the survey relied on by the Office for National Statistics for migration estimates.

Those counting migrants into the country went to Heathrow, Gatwick and Manchester during the crucial years of large-scale immigration from Eastern Europe, while only a handful attended other major airports such as Luton and Stansted, where hundreds of thousands of migrants were arriving.

In addition, immigrants on many ferry routes were barely or never checked, tens of thousands of children were missed entirely and warning signs from other statistics were ignored, the report adds.

The ONS confession comes almost 12 months after the discrepancies first emerged – and follows years of scepticism over the accuracy of its International Passenger Survey, which is based on interviews with people passing through air and sea ports.

Last May the Daily Mail revealed that the 2011 census found nearly half a million more people in the country than the ONS had estimated and that the great majority were Eastern European immigrants.

Yesterday’s report appealed for the millions of pounds spent on the immigration survey to be quadrupled to cope with the rate of arrivals. Other ONS surveys of the population in Britain suggested immigration was much higher than the IPS estimates.

The rate at which National Insurance numbers were issued to new workers also indicated that immigration figures must be wrong. But between 2005 and 2008 nothing was done to put the survey right. The 2011 national census found there were 464,000 more people in the country than had been expected.

The ONS said yesterday that most of the unchecked immigrants arrived in the four years after Poland and seven other Eastern European countries entered the EU in April 2004, when Britain was one of just three European countries to allow them in to take jobs.

Failures in the survey meant that between 2001 and 2011, net migration – the population change after both immigration and emigration are counted – was underestimated by 346,000, equivalent to a city the size of Bradford.

Nearly a quarter of a million went uncounted between 2005 and 2008 alone, when there were just a handful of clipboard survey staff at Luton and Stansted and none at all at Robin Hood airport near Doncaster.

Vast swathes of the countryside will have to be sacrificed to build new homes for immigrants, the Planning Minister warned last night.

Nick Boles said migrants accounted for almost half of the housing demand, and his figures suggest 100,000 new homes a year will be needed to accommodate them. The minister added: ‘We can’t go on like this.’

Earlier this week, Mr Boles alarmed conservationists by saying up to two million acres of green fields may have to be concreted over to deal with the housing shortage.

Now he has become the first government minister to draw a clear link between housing demand and the legacy of Labour’s open-door immigration policy.

Mr Boles said: ‘The fact is – and I am critical of the last government’s immigration policies – we allowed the population of this country to expand dramatically.

‘The population of England has gone up by two million in the last ten years. These people now live here, these people are now British and they need homes just like other British people.

‘The fact is, 43 per cent of the new households which want a home, is accounted for by immigration.

‘We can’t go on like this. We need to have less immigration and more house-building and we might then have a civilised country.’

Mr Boles warned the scale of demand meant large swathes of countryside would have to be sacrificed, because there were not enough empty homes or developed sites.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said last month that the number of households was forecast to expand at the rate of 230,000 a year. The figure supplied by Mr Boles suggests that immigration will account for almost 100,000 of the total.

Mr Clegg said total house building amounted to just 117,000 last year, adding: ‘There’s only one way out of this housing crisis: We have to build our way out.’

Sir Andrew Green, founder of the think-tank MigrationWatch, said the public would be shocked by the figures, which are significantly higher than the Government’s previous estimate on the issue, which suggested immigration accounted for 36 per cent of new households.

Sir Andrew said: ‘At last a housing minister has been absolutely clear about the link between housing demand and immigration. The best way to deal with the housing crisis is to reduce immigration.’

The BBC has been trying to discredit a report on the loss of jobs for British people that mass immigration causes.

The fact that discrediting it is so important to them shows just how strong the Nationalist feeling is in Britain at the moment.

Even the mainstream newspapers are being forced to change their rhetoric and are calling the BBC out on their anti-White policies.

Forget the threat of war in Crimea. Never mind about the secret arrest of one of the Prime Minister’s closest aides over child pornography allegations.

For the BBC, which for years has suppressed any debate about mass immigration, the top news yesterday was that the Government was burying a report that undermined the Home Secretary’s case for border controls.

The Corporation claimed this was ‘much too embarrassing’ to publish, since it contradicted an earlier study on which Theresa May based her assertion that every 100 new arrivals deprive 23 Britons of work.

The buried report, said the BBC, shows the impact is ‘much, much smaller’.

The Mail hates to spoil a good conspiracy theory. But may we introduce a few facts into this non-story?

One is that the report is not being suppressed, but only delayed while the figures are checked. Another is that it doesn’t challenge the previous study.

Indeed, the unpublished report doesn’t quantify the British jobs displaced by migrants – though apparently it points out that the poorest are hardest hit.

But all this is barely relevant beside the obvious truth that the case for controls rests on a host of factors besides jobs.

Forget the million young Britons seeking work and the countless others still languishing, despite Iain Duncan Smith’s efforts, in our insidious benefits culture.

What about the impact of mass migration on housing, schools, hospitals, transport – not to mention social cohesion and our very identity as a nation?

It makes a welcome change that the BBC is carrying stories on the subject, after years of suppressing them. We only wish it would be a little more honest.

The BBC is as responsible for the destruction of Britain as the politicians themselves, if not more so.  If it were not for the continual chants of “don’t believe your eyes – it’s not happening!” we would have, as a people, stood up to the government and said no.

Now, with there being very little left to save, their conspiracy is laid bare, and it makes no difference.

Sham marriages are a “massive loophole” in Britain’s border controls and amount to a “golden ticket” into the country for immigrants, an official report has warned.

John Vine, the Chief Inspector of Borders and Immigration, highlighted serious failings in the way officials are attempting to combat bogus marriages.

He found evidence it could be a “growing problem”, but intelligence on the true picture was “lagging behind”.

The report said Home Office analysts said the four main non-European nationalities involved in sham marriages were Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Nigerian.

Men made up more than eight out of 10 of the non-European half of the arrangement. They were typically trying to marry someone from the newer eastern European states.

The report described how many of the women arrived in the country only a few days before the ceremony, and were referred to by immigration officials as “awayday brides”.

A significant number of sham marriages may be going undetected because register offices are failing to report suspicious couples to immigration officials, the report added.

“A Home Office senior manager described the obtaining of residency through sham marriage as akin to a ‘golden ticket’,” it said.

“All staff we interviewed … stressed the importance of receiving co-operation from registrars in tackling sham marriage.

“One went so far as to decribe sham marriage as a ‘massive loophole in the immigration rules’.”

Britain’s population will surge to 132million over the next century if current trends persist, officials said yesterday.

High immigration, rising birth rates and growing life expectancy are behind the forecast from the Office for National Statistics.

It said the UK population – already the fastest growing in Europe – will hit 100million by 2075 and 132million by 2112.

That would be more than double the current estimate of 63.7million, prompting calls last night from senior MPs for urgent restrictions ahead of an expected influx of Romanians and Bulgarians next year.

Analysts believe a population of 70million would critically overstretch housing, transport, health, education, energy and other services.

If immigration were to stop now, the population would gradually fall to below its present level, the ONS said.

It has produced a series of projections based on ‘alternative assumptions’ as what is likely to happen under different levels of immigration, births and life expectancy.

According to the principal estimates – those the ONS considers most likely to come true – the population will rise to 73.3million in 2037, and the politically sensitive 70million point will come as early as 2027.
