A senior Hungarian government official close to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was hit Tuesday with U.S. sanctions for his alleged involvement in corruption in Hungary, a rare step against a sitting official in an allied country.

The Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control sanctioned Antal Rogán for corruption while in office. A key figure in Orbán’s government, Rogán is accused of using his position to broker favorable business deals with government-aligned businesspeople, a key part of European Union penalties against Hungary that have withheld billions in funding over official corruption concerns.

Speaking at a news conference in Budapest on Tuesday, U.S. Ambassador to Hungary David Pressman said Rogán was “a primary architect, implementer and beneficiary” of systemic corruption in Hungary which he described as a “kleptocratic ecosystem.”

“For too long, senior government officials in Hungary have used positions of power to enrich themselves and their families, moving significant funds from the public purse into private pockets,” Pressman said, adding that there were “many others involved” in such corruption within Hungary’s government.

The head of Orbán’s cabinet office, Rogán oversees the engineering of wide-reaching government communication campaigns that are credited with being instrumental in maintaining Orbán’s power since 2010. Known among critics in Hungary as the “propaganda minister,” Rogán rarely appears in public or gives interviews, but is a veteran advisor to Orbán and also oversees Hungary’s secret services.

State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said in a statement Tuesday that Rogan’s activity “is emblematic of the broader climate of impunity in Hungary where key elements of the state have been captured by oligarchs and undemocratic actors.”

The authority used to designate Rogán is a Trump-era executive order that implements the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act, which targets human rights abusers and corruption around the world.

The sanctions brought by the outgoing Biden administration reflect U.S. efforts in the last four years to address concerns in Washington that Orbán has led Hungary, a member of the EU and a NATO member, to abandon democratic principles while pursuing closer ties with Russia and China.

Orbán, who backs Donald Trump, has expressed certainty that U.S.-Hungarian relations would improve once the president-elect takes office. Orbán made three visits to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence in 2024, while Trump has spoken positively about him.

Ambassador Pressman, whose tenure in Hungary will end this month, has been the subject of intense criticism by Orbán’s government, which accuses him of attempting to interfere in Hungary’s internal affairs.

Responding to the sanctions, Hungary’s foreign minister, Péter Szijjártó, wrote on social media: “This is personal revenge against Antal Rogán by the ambassador sent by the failed U.S. administration to Hungary, but who is now leaving ingloriously and without success.”

“How nice that in a few days’ time the United States will be led by people who see our country as a friend and not an enemy,” Szijjártó wrote.

It’s not really clear that this is how that works.

Maybe Trump will appoint a better ambassador and lift these sanctions. Certainly, Orban has done a lot to try to make that happen. However, none of the employees at the State Department who pushed this agenda on Hungary are going to be fired, and all of the operations being run against Hungary by the State Department will continue, because it’s all of the same people.

Trump was originally saying he was going to fire everyone in the federal government, but that plan disappeared a long time ago.

“Since the end of the Ukrainian transit route in mid-December, natural gas prices in Europe have risen by 20%,” he said.

Why is Hungary even staying in the EU?

What do they gain from this?

Hungary has lost its right to a billion euros of funding after Budapest failed to tackle corruption, according to the EU authorities in Brussels. This is the first time in history that Brussels has enforced such a move.

The European Commission on Wednesday said Hungary had lost its entitlement to European Union aid worth some €1 billion ($1.03 billion) due to rule of law breaches.

Previously, the EU pressured the country to change its laws in order to tackle conflicts of interest and corruption.

Budapest had been told it must make reforms by the end of 2024 or they would expire.

In 2022, the EU started “conditionality” proceedings against Hungary, seeking to block payments because of alleged infringements of public procurement rules. It said there was a lack of control and transparency.

Hungary was found to have disregarded EU standards and fundamental values and told to implement sufficient reforms. Hungary then agreed to undertake reforms which allowed some funds to be unblocked, but a €19 billion ($20 billion) sum remained frozen.

The EU’s conditionality regulation stated that — without the suspension being lifted — “the first tranche of suspended commitments” amounting to €1 billion would expire at the end of 2024.

In a report published in July, the European Commission concluded that Hungary did not meet EU democratic standards. Most notable in its failings were said to be corruption, political financing, conflicts of interest and media independence.

The “democracy” scheme to absorb formerly communist Eastern European states was entirely based on bribery. That was the whole scheme: they bribed all of these countries, gave out cash in exchange for these countries joining “liberal democracy.”

Most of the leaders who went along with this were just cartoonishly corrupt (look at Romania).

As US-dominated Western Europe continues to push homosexuality, child homosexuality, vagina overlordism, and mass immigration onto these countries, the populations are beginning to wonder if the bribe money is actually worth it.

Ursula von der Leyen has accused Viktor Orbán of a historic failure to support Ukraine, economic mismanagement and making his country a “back door for foreign interference” in her sharpest public rebuke yet to Hungary’s strongman leader.

Standing a few metres away from Orbán in the European parliament in Strasbourg, the European Commission president pointedly criticised Orbán’s stance on Ukraine by contrasting his record with that of Hungarian freedom fighters of 1956, who rose against Soviet oppression but were ultimately defeated by the Red Army.

Without naming Orbán directly, she said: “There are still some who blame this war not on Putin’s lust for power but on Ukraine’s thirst for freedom, so I want to ask them: would they ever blame the Hungarians for the Soviet invasion in 1956?”

She added: “There is no European language where peace is synonymous with surrender and sovereignty is synonymous with occupation.”

Only a woman could ever think that sentence sounded hard.

This usually routine moment in the EU calendar became a boisterous session, with singing and personal insults. Orbán’s MEPs in the far-right Patriots for Europe group applauded him, while the mainstream pro-European parties clapped for von der Leyen. The Hungarian leader also had to listen to a rowdy rendition of the anti-fascist song Bella Ciao from a small group, prompting the speaker, Roberta Metsola, to intervene to bring order: “This is not Eurovision.”

After Orbán lamented Europe’s declining share of global trade, von der Leyen took him to task for Hungary’s economic policies such as taxes that target foreign companies, export restrictions, “arbitrary inspections” and public contracts awarded to a small group of beneficiaries.

While Orbán attempted to cast himself as a strong defender of European borders, she said Hungarian authorities had released convicted people smugglers and traffickers early from prison, adding: “This is not fighting illegal migration in Europe, this is not protecting our union, this is just throwing problems over your neighbour’s fence.”

Referring to an agreement that allows Chinese police to patrol with their local counterparts in Hungary, she said: “This is not defending Europe’s sovereignty, this is a back door for foreign interference.”

And she criticised Orbán for failing to follow through on an EU pledge made in 2022 to end dependency on Russian fossil fuels. “Instead of looking for alternative sources [of energy], in particular, one member state just looked for alternative ways to buy fossil fuels from Russia.”

The Hungarian leader said he was surprised by what he had heard from von der Leyen and accused her of turning the commission into “a political weapon”. He rejected any comparison between the events of 1956 and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, while reiterating that the EU, he believed, had a “losing strategy” over the war.

“We are never going to accept that European unity means that you tell us what to do and that we should keep quiet,” he said.

Actually, that kind of is what “European unity” means.

The European Union on Wednesday began the process of clawing back hundreds of millions of euros in funds meant to go Hungary after its ant-migrant government refused to pay a huge fine for breaking the bloc’s asylum rules.

In June, the EU’s top court ordered Hungary to pay 200 million euros ($223 million) for persistently depriving migrants of their right to apply for asylum. The court imposed an additional fine of 1 million euros for every day it failed to comply.

The European Court of Justice described Hungary’s actions as “an unprecedented and extremely serious infringement of EU law.” Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán slammed its ruling as “outrageous and unacceptable.”

The EU’s executive branch, the European Commission, said that given Hungary’s failure to pay or provide information about its intentions, Brussels is “moving to what we call the off-setting procedure” by taking the money from common funds that would otherwise go to Budapest.

“So, what we are going to do now is to deduct the 200 million euro from upcoming payments from the EU budget towards Hungary,” commission spokesman Balazs Ujvari said. He said it would take time to identify which parts of Hungary’s funding could be deducted.

Ujvari said the commission has also sent a first payment request on the daily fines amounting to 93 million euros ($103 million) so far. “Counting from receipt, the Hungarian authorities will have 45 days to make that payment,” he said.

In 2020, the ECJ found that Hungary had restricted access to international protection, unlawfully detained asylum applicants, and failed to observe their right to stay while their applications were processed.

The transit zones were closed in 2020, shortly after that ruling.

People have the right to apply for asylum or other forms of international protection if they fear for their safety in their home countries or face the prospect of persecution based on their race, religion, ethnic background, gender or other discrimination.

I just hope they don’t start deducting anything from Victor Orban’s neck.

Not only is that his only defense mechanism, it’s the only way he’s able to signal to women that he’s ready to mate.

Belgium’s outgoing State Secretary for Asylum and Migration Nicole de Moor has said that Viktor Orbán’s plan to bus migrants to Brussels is “unacceptable” after the Hungarian Prime Minister indicated he was serious about his idea.

“If Brussels wants migrants, Brussels can have them,” Orbán repeated at a press conference in Italy on Friday, indicating that Hungary was holding firm on the plan to send busloads of displaced people to Brussels in protest of the EU’s migration policy.

The Hungarian Prime Minister is pushing back on a legal ruling that fined Hungary €200 million for violating European law in its treatment of asylum seekers (plus €1 million per day until it adheres to the rules). In retaliation, buses routed from Röszke (a village in the south) to the Belgian capital will offer new arrivals a “one-way trip” to the EU institutions, free of charge.

De Moor (CD&V) “strongly condemned” the “unacceptable” plan and denounced a “serious violation of the basic principles of European cooperation and mutual trust between EU Member States.”

‘Flagrant violation’ of international law“If Hungary were actually to implement these plans, this would mean that migrants would illegally cross the territory of other Member States and ultimately arrive illegally in Belgium,” a press release published on Monday stated. “This would be a flagrant violation of European and international agreements.”

Orbán’s strategy, announced in late August, is prompting responses from a flurry of Belgian politicians.

“The Hungarian government, which also chairs the (presidency of the Council of the) EU, is clearly not afraid of any provocation. I ask Alexander De Croo and Annelies Verlinden to block these buses at the border,” tweeted the Mayor of Brussels Philippe Close (PS). “How long are we going to tolerate these provocations from a country that we subsidise?”

Hungary’s nationalist prime minister, Viktor Orbán, said on Saturday that the EU was sliding toward oblivion, in a rambling anti-west speech in which he warned of a new, Asia-oriented “world order” while throwing his support behind Donald Trump’s US presidential bid.

“Europe has given up defending its own interests,” Orbán said in Băile Tuşnad, a majority ethnic Hungarian town in central Romania. “All Europe is doing today is following the US’s pro-Democrat foreign policy unconditionally … even at the cost of self-destruction.

“A change is coming that has not been seen for 500 years. What we are facing is in fact a world order change,” he added, naming China, India, Pakistan and Indonesia as becoming the “dominant centre” of the world.

Not really sure about Pakistan, but yeah.

Orbán alleged that the US was behind the 2022 explosions that damaged the Nord Stream gas pipelines built to carry gas from Russia to Germany, calling it “an act of terrorism carried out at the obvious direction of the Americans”. He did not offer any evidence to back up the claim.

Orbán said on Saturday that Trump’s bid for re-election aimed “to pull the American people back from a post-nationalist liberal state to a nation state” and he rehashed a slew of conservative tropes that Trump was being penalised unfairly to prevent his electoral bid.

“That is why they want to put him in prison. That’s why they want to take away his assets. And if that doesn’t work, that’s why they want to kill him,” Orbán said, referring to an assassination attempt on Trump at a Pennsylvania rally this month.

The EU’s longest-serving leader, Orbán has become an icon to some conservative populists for his firm opposition to immigration and LGBTQ+ rights. He has also cracked down on the press and judiciary in Hungary and has been accused by the EU of violating rule of law and democracy standards.

The EU’s most senior diplomat, Josep Borrell, has called a meeting of the bloc’s foreign ministers in Brussels – in effect a boycott of a rival gathering in Budapest – to register widespread anger over Hungary’s rogue diplomacy.

Borrell announced that he had decided to convene informal meetings of EU foreign affairs and defence ministers in Brussels after the summer break, meaning the same participants will not gather in Budapest as originally planned.

At Monday’s foreign ministers’ meeting “EU member states overwhelmingly criticised Hungary’s lack of sincere and loyal cooperation”, Borrell wrote on X, as he announced the decision.

Hungary, which took over the EU’s rotating presidency on 1 July, has infuriated other EU leaders, with prime minister Viktor Orbán’s self-styled “peace missions” to Moscow and Beijing and talks with the Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.

Borrell said all member states “with one single exception” were “very much critical” about Hungary’s behaviour. Slovakia – led by Orbán’s regional ally Robert Fico – again held back from criticising Hungary, after its silence at a meeting of senior diplomats last week.

Boycotting or protesting directly against peace is such a bizarre concept.

The fact that the people protesting peace are doing it in the name of the sacredness of national borders, and happen to be the same people who opened the borders of every white country to allow massive swaths of formerly white cities to be colonized by foreigners, makes it all the more remarkable.

The stated purpose of the EU, as expressed in Von Der Leyen’s reelection speech this week, is to use war to force gay sex on everyone. And she won. So this is apparently the consensus.

Volodymyr Zelenskiy has taken aim at the Hungarian prime minister, Viktor Orbán, accusing him of betraying fellow European leaders after Orbán’s recent “peace mission” to Moscow.

The Ukrainian president kicked off the European Political Community summit at Blenheim Palace on Thursday with an emotional speech in which he made veiled but repeated references to Orbán’s recent attempts to get close to Moscow.

Zelenskiy was addressing a room packed full of European leaders and defence ministers, who have gathered in Oxfordshire at a pivotal moment for the war in Ukraine.

He told the session: “We have maintained unity in Europe by acting together, which means that Putin has missed his primary targets … This is our advantage, but it remains an advantage only as long as we are united.”

In an apparent reference to Orbán’s recent visit to meet Putin in Moscow, he added: “If someone in Europe tries to resolve issues behind our backs, or even at the expense of someone else, if someone wants to make some trips to the capital of war to talk – and perhaps promise something against our common interests or at the expense of Ukraine or other countries – then why should we consider such a person?

“The EU can also address all their issues without this one individual.”
