Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, who serves as Archbishop of Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, hosted a July 25 press conference at the archbishop’s house, during which the faith leaders implored politicians to fight three bills that they say will erode the nation’s social fabric.

Behind them, a banner in three languages read, “Degenerate and Immoral LGBTQ Laws Destroy Civilized Society.”

The religious leaders are protesting the Gender Equality Bill, Women’s Empowerment Bill, and Penal Code Amendment Bill, which they say legalize homosexuality, abortion, and prostitution. The country’s high court ruled the Gender Equality Bill unconstitutional on June 7, and “the Women’s Empowerment Bill was passed in parliament, and the third one is pending in the House,” according to Union of Catholic Asian News (UCA News).

“As Catholics, we only accept marriage between a man and a woman. These laws disrupt marriage and family life, which are foundational to every religion we believe in,” Cardinal Ranjith said at the press conference.

Muslim cleric Hassan Moulana decried the laws as “harmful,” and Buddhist monks in the country have also reportedly written to Acting President Ranil Wickramasinghe on July 24 to denounce the bills.

Cultura Vitae, a local organization, has accused Western governments of attempting to force Sri Lanka’s implementation of the bills through international groups such as the International Monetary Fund, which attaches “strict” conditions to its loans, UCA News reported.

Cultura Vitae president Eshan Dias, who attended the press conference, told UCA News, “These bills aim to enforce equality by requiring equal representation of LGBTQ+ content in schools, libraries, and media, recognizing all family types as equal.”

Dr. F.E. Dias, a member of Cultura Vitae, has pointed out that the UN Population Fund-endorsed “National Policy on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment” names abortion and prostitution “as integral parts of gender equality,” and “normalizes same-sex ties and sodomy and advocates teaching these concepts to students as part of the curriculum.”

With priests chanting and blowing conch shells, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the consecration of a controversial Hindu temple in this north Indian town on Monday. The ceremony was capped by the unveiling of a 51-inch black stone idol of the Hindu god Ram.

The temple inauguration marks the culmination of a decades-long dispute over a site that Hindus believe is the birthplace of their Lord Ram. In 1992, a mob egged on by leaders of the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, now led by Modi, tore down a 16th century mosque. Riots that followed killed over 2,000 people, most of them Muslim.

Political analysts say the destruction of the mosque boosted the BJP’s electoral fortunes. Construction of the new Ram temple began in 2020, after the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Hindu litigants. Modi himself led the foundation stone that year.

“Our Lord Ram isn’t going to be in a tent anymore,” said Modi following Monday’s consecration. “Our Lord Ram will be in a grand temple.”

Until the Supreme Court’s verdict in 2019, an idol of Lord Ram was kept in a tent near the site where the temple has now been built — a grand temple that many Indians have long hoped to see.

“Lord Ram is our god, our ancestor, our king,” says Pooja Kashyap, a 28-year-old from Ayodhya, who spoke with NPR before performing Hindu rituals at Ayodhya’s Sarayu river. “It’s very important that he should be in his temple.”

But the $220 million temple isn’t yet finished. An official at the trust overseeing construction says it will need another year and a half to wrap up. Political analysts say the consecration was performed so the prime minister could show it off as an achievement ahead of national elections set for this spring. Modi’s party had long promised to construct a temple to Ram on this spot.

Critics of the BJP call the temple a monument to India’s fast-eroding secularism.

“The idea is to assert Hindu supremacy,” says Ziya Us Salam, a veteran journalist at the Indian daily The Hindu and author of Being Muslim in Hindu India. “There is one religion which is supreme in the country, and everybody else who is a non-follower of that religion is reduced to the status of a second-class citizen.”

Many Indian public schools and colleges declared a holiday on Monday, and civil servants working for the central government and some states were given a half-day off. Modi exhorted people to light lamps in celebration, and BJP volunteers distributed rice in the name of Lord Ram.

An Indian man is so convinced President Trump is his “god,” he has a life-size statue as a shrine in his garden — and offers him daily prayers.

“Instead of praying to other gods, I started praying to him,” Bussa Krishna said, calling the president “my god, Donald Trump.”

Krishna, 37, started worshiping Trump four years ago when he says he came to him in a dream, hiring 15 laborers to work with him for a month to make the 6-foot statue in his village in the southern state of Telangana.

Citing sources, NDTV reported that no political party will be part of the new trust. Interior Minister Amit Shah said that additional 67 acres of land will be transferred to the trust on top of the 0.3 acres designated for the Hindu temple by the Supreme Court.

For decades, the area in question was the epicenter of a bitter dispute between Hindu and Muslim communities who argued about whose religious shrine should be built there.
