One in three Britons are afraid to give women CPR because they are worried about touching their breasts, a study reveals.

The same proportion of men (33 per cent) also fear being accused of ‘inappropriate’ touching when giving women chest compressions.

However, just 13 per cent of women have the same reservations, according to the survey of 1,000 UK adults for St John Ambulance.

Why do 13% of women have those reservations to begin with?

The first aid charity warned the sexual taboo is putting women at greater risk of dying from cardiac arrest and stressed: ‘When it comes to CPR, every body is the same.’

Previous research found only 68 per cent of women are likely to receive bystander CPR compared to 73 per cent of of men.

And survival from the time of the cardiac arrest to hospital admission was 34 per cent for women but 37 per cent for men.

St John Ambulance wants everyone to learn CPR, which is given in the same way to both sexes, adding: ‘Everyone deserves the best possible chance of survival.’

A defibrillator can make a critical difference, as when used within the first three minutes it can increase the chances of someone surviving a cardiac arrest by up to 70 per cent.

The defibrillator has pads that need to be placed on bare skin on the chest area.

However, when hearing this instruction, 38 per cent of people agreed that their levels of discomfort would rise.

Nearly half of the male respondents (46 per cent) stated they would feel less comfortable using a defibrillator on a woman knowing that they might have to remove her clothing, including a bra, versus 31 per cent of females surveyed.

Nearly a quarter (23 per cent) of all respondents admitted they are less likely to give CPR to a woman in public than a man.

Each year over 30,000 people have an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in the UK, with less than one in ten surviving, according to the British Heart Foundation.

A young nurse suffered a cardiac arrest while studying the condition before fellow nurses rushed to save her

Andy Hoang had eagerly began her first nursing job this year in New Hampshire, with a desire to specialize in cardiac care. However, during a practice session on how to respond to someone in cardiac arrest at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, the 23-year-old started to feel dizzy and nauseated.

Hoang remembered nothing more of the medical episode, before waking up waking up only to be told she herself had suffered a cardiac arrest, with her fellow nurses in training coming to her aid as they swapped chest compressions on a mannequin for the real thing

“One checked her carotid, one her femoral (arteries), and she did not have a pulse,” instructor Lisa Davenport said. The nurses started CPR and a “code blue,” or medical emergency, team was called.

“What was really stressful about the situation was that we never had a real code blue in the center,” Davenport said. “We train for them all the time.”

Davenport shouted for help. Luckily, the Lebanon hospital’s critical care team was nearby, attending a separate session. More nurses came in, hooked Hoang up to defibrillator for monitoring, inserted an IV line and placed her on oxygen. A doctor and nurse from another department rushed in with crash carts.

Hoang was waking up by the time an emergency team arrived. Davenport estimated 15 minutes passed from the time Hoang slumped over to when they got her on a stretcher and sent her to the emergency department. But it felt longer. “It worked out, but it was pretty frightening for all of us,” she said. “You just don’t expect that to happen with someone as young as Andy.”

Hoang, who recently returned to work, couldn’t believe what had happened either. “I would say I’m your pretty average healthy 23-year-old,” she said. She goes to the gym four times a week, runs, and eats well. “I’m on my feet 12, 13 hours a day at work, so I want to make sure that I’m in shape for that.”
