Greensboro Police say they’ve charged a man with the murder of a woman who was found dead behind a church back in 2012.

Police found the body of 33-year-old Paula Joy Nicks on May 25, 2012, behind a church on Randolph Avenue. Investigators say she died from blunt force trauma.

According to a release, detectives working off new information were able to determine 27-year-old Jack Leon Coker, Jr. was involved in Nicks’ murder. They say he lived in Greensboro when the murder happened.

Police arrested Coker on Tuesday, February 11 after he was released from the NC Department of Corrections. Police say he was serving a sentence for Attempted Second Degree Rape, which happened in the Kinston, NC area.

Coker is charged with first-degree murder.

After a year without a suspect, police have arrested a man they say killed a woman during Christmas time.

It all started back on December 12th, 2018. Officers found 32-year-old Krystal Dell Avery dead on 2004 Veasley street. At the time, her cause of death was unknown.

Later on, with the help of the state chief medical examiner, they found out her death was a homicide.

They arrested 23-year old Jeremiah Brown on September 26th, 2019. The Police department’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team made the arrest near Cone Boulevard and U.S. 29.

Brown is charged with 1st-degree murder and has several other unrelated warrants. He’s being held in the Guilford County Jail with no bond.

It’s been an excruciating four years for the Brown family.

Larry Brown, 74, was brutally beaten to death with a fire extinguisher at while he was walking to the bus stop in August 2015.

Three teens were involved in the murder on Greenbriar Road.

After killing Brown, they stole $3.

The youngest teenager involved in the crime was sentenced this week: now 18-year-old Ketrellia Harris. She was 14 when it happened.

Larry Brown’s daughter-in-law Lauren was there for the sentencing Tuesday. She said she locked eyes with Harris.

“She did turn around and look at me, and did tell us ‘I do apologize for what happened I’m truly, honestly sorry I wish this never happened.”

Lauren said her exact words were:

“I have grown and found myself, and realized at that age I was stupid and I should have done it a lot differently.”

But the Brown family wasn’t buying it.

“I mean she wasn’t showing any remorse at the time, every once in a while you’d see her lift her glasses and act like she was trying to wipe a tear or something.”

Harris was sentenced to a maximum of 65 months in prison. But her public defender said she will probably only serve 6 months because of time-served in juvenile detention.

The Brown family says it’s not enough.

The boyfriend of a woman whose body was found inside a Steele Creek home Sunday afternoon is facing murder charges in her death.

Stephanie Potts, 35, was found around 3:25 p.m. inside a home on Black Chestnut Place, in a neighborhood off of Steele Creek Road.

Monday, police announced Potts’ boyfriend, 31-year-old Deshawn Lamont Clipper, was arrested in connection to Potts’ killing. Clipper was arrested Monday morning in Greensboro.

Police say Clipper is charged with first-degree murder. According to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, Clipper was arrested in September for assault on a female.
