The Ghanaian parliament unanimously passed the Affirmative Action Gender Bill 2024 last week, ending a process launched in 1998 aimed at creating an equitable society.

But sexism in the male-dominated West African nation of 33 million people is rife, with women often sidelined and suffering violence and practices such as female genital mutilation.

The law seeks to ensure 50:50 gender parity in public posts and parliament by 2030. The number of women in parliament is currently 15 percent, well below the 30 percent target set by the United Nations for all countries.

Ace-Liam Nana Sam Ankrah was recognised by Guinness World Records (GWR) at the age of one year and 152 days.

The boy’s mother said she first observed his talent when he was only six months old and she now hopes he will take the art world by storm.

To qualify for the record, GWR said Ace-Liam needed to sell his work at a professional exhibition that was open to the public.

The work needed to be done to a professional standard and evidence presented that it was done on his own.

Ace-Liam’s work was first exhibited at Accra’s Museum of Science and Technology last December.

He went on to sell nine of the 10 pieces that were on display and was even commissioned to create a painting by Rebecca Akufo-Addo, the country’s first lady.

His mother, Chantelle, is also an artist, and said she discovered his talent while she tried to keep him busy while working on her own pieces.

She said: “While learning to crawl, I spread out a piece of unstretched canvas on the floor and dropped some paint on it as a way to keep him busy while I worked on a commission painting.

“He ended up spreading the paint all over the canvas, and in the process he created his first masterpiece titled ‘The crawl’.”

Ghana’s parliament passed a bill on Wednesday that further clamps down on the rights of LGBTQ people in the West African country.

The “Human Sexual Rights and Family Values” bill enjoys support from a majority of lawmakers in Accra and has been sponsored by a coalition of Christian, Muslim, and Ghanaian traditional leaders.

Same-sex intercourse in Ghana was already punishable by up to three years in prison, but while discrimination against LGBTQ people is common, no one has ever been prosecuted under the colonial-era law.

The new bill, commonly referred to as the anti-gay bill, now also imposes a prison sentence of up to five years for the “wilful promotion, sponsorship, or support of LGBTQ+ activities.”

The bill has been sent to the president’s desk to be signed into law. Opposition lawmaker Sam George, the main sponsor of the bill, called on President Nana Akufo-Addo to approve it.

“There is nothing that deals with LGBTQ better than this bill that has been passed by parliament,” George said. “We expect the president to walk his talk and be a man of his words.”

The bill has been widely condemned by rights activists and still has to be validated by the president before entering into law, a move observers believe is unlikely before an election in December. President Akufo-Addo has not confirmed if he will sign the bill into law.

“It not only legalizes discrimination but also fosters an environment of fear and persecution,” he said. “With harsh penalties for both LGBTQ individuals and activists, this bill threatens the safety and well-being of an already vulnerable community.”

UNAIDS executive director Winnie Byanyima said if the bill becomes law, it “will obstruct access to life-saving services, undercut social protection, and jeopardize Ghana’s development success.”

Amnesty International has said the proposed legislation “poses significant threats to the fundamental rights and freedoms of LGBT+ persons.”

Ghana’s vice president, Mahamudu Bawumia revealed this week that the government wants to pay for oil imports with gold instead of US dollars. He explained the plan as an attempt to protect the country’s dwindling foreign currency reserves.

Official data shows Ghana’s gross international reserves have fallen from $9.7 billion at the end of 2021 to around $6.6 billion at the end of September 2022.

The reserves could reportedly cover just three months of the country’s goods and services imports — half a month short of the government’s target for 2022.

The gold-for-oil policy is expected to be implemented in the first quarter of 2023, to counter inflation caused by the depreciation of the national currency. Bawumia explained that the Ghanaian cedi has lost more than half its value against the dollar so far this year due to strong demand for the greenback from oil importers.

The late George Floyd was an African American who was “gruesomely killed” by a white American police officer in the USA on 25 May 2020.

Speaking at the ceremony on Friday, 5 May 2020, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Barbara Oteng-Gyasi expressed the hope that the death of Mr Floyd will put an end to racism, not only in the US but across the globe.

“Racism in America continues to be a deadly pandemic, for which for more than 400 years now, our brothers and sisters in the United States of America have yearned for a cure. George Floyd was not the first black person to use the phrase ‘I can’t breathe’… The present situation we face today in the year 2020 with the death of George Floyd is going to result in change… One who condones evil is just as evil as the one who perpetrates it. That is why it is right not only for Chauvin to be charged but all his accomplices who, together, [killed George Floyd],” Ms Oteng-Gyasi said.

She continued: “We gather in solidarity with brothers and sisters to change the status quo. Racism must end. We pray and hope that George Floyd’s death will not be in vain but will bring an end to prejudice and racial discrimination across the world.”

Ghana, last year, opened up the country to receive Africans in the diaspora through a government initiative called the Year of Return. Thousands of African Americans and blacks from other countries visited the country.

Two Ghanaian university lecturers have been suspended without pay after a BBC investigation reported they had sexually harassed undercover reporters posing as students.

The University of Ghana suspended Ransford Gyampo for six months and Paul Butakor for four months.

Both deny the allegations made last year in BBC Africa Eye’s sex-for-grades documentary.

A Nigerian lecturer was also suspended after it was broadcast in October.

Four academics were secretly filmed as part of a year-long investigation. BBC journalists posed as prospective students to expose sexual harassment and misconduct at both the University of Ghana and the University of Lagos.

In one scene, Dr Butakor is filmed asking an undercover journalist if he could become her “side guy”, adding that “a side will see how best to contribute to your career”.

Prof Gyampo tells another undercover reporter that he will marry her. He then asks her what school she went to. After she responds, he says: “There is a rumour that the students of that school like penis.”

That’s actually a really good pick-up line that I’m going to start using.

The idea you would drop a pick-up line like that on some girl who wasn’t flirting with you already is completely non-believable.

You can watch the women in the documentary. They were obviously doing a sexy-sexy thing on these men.

Two men have been charged with a series of offences including rape after a group of British schoolgirls was attacked at gunpoint in Ghana.

A number of armed men entered accommodation where the pupils and their teachers were staying during a school trip to the west African country in December.

Police said a Ghanaian security guard was shot and the female victims were “subjected to serious sexual assaults”.

Some of their possessions were stolen.

Police in the UK said Ishmael Akyene, 34, a Ghanaian national, had been charged by Ghanaian police with 14 counts of robbery, one count of rape, one count of conspiracy to rape, one count of possession of a firearm, one count of possession of an instrument intended for unlawful entry and one count of money laundering.

A second man, Daniel Akpan, 29, a Nigerian national, has been charged with 14 counts of robbery, two counts of rape, one count of conspiracy to rape, one count of possession of a firearm, one count of possession of an instrument intended for unlawful entry and one count of money laundering.

Both men have been remanded in custody.

A search is continuing to find a third suspect.

An investigative journalist in Ghana who helped expose a high-ranking official at world soccer body FIFA as corrupt was shot dead by gunmen on a motorbike as he drove home alone at night, police said Thursday.

His employers said he was assassinated.

Ahmed Hussein-Suale was killed late Wednesday, shot twice in the chest and once in the neck at close range while driving in the suburb of Accra where he lived. He died immediately, according to police.

Tiger Eye PI, the investigative journalism house Hussein-Suale worked for, said it had the hallmarks of a professional hit.

“We call on the security agencies to unmask the elements behind this assassination and bring them to book,” Tiger Eye PI said.

Police haven’t announced any arrests. Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo condemned the killing and said he expected police to arrest the perpetrators of the “heinous crime” as soon as possible.

Hussein-Suale worked under the leadership of Anas Aremeyaw Anas, a renowned Ghanaian investigative journalist once singled out and praised by former U.S. President Barack Obama as courageous and who has used undercover television documentaries to expose graft and organized crime in Ghana and across Africa.
