Authorities in Mobile have a 22-year-old man in custody in connection with a kidnapping and sodomy they believe led to the murder of a 25-year-old victim on Thursday (August 3) evening.

The 25-year-old victim found suffering from gunshot wounds was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Police said based on the facts discovered throughout the homicide investigation, the case will be presented to a grand jury. McBride was subsequently charged with first-degree robbery, first-degree kidnapping, and first-degree sodomy.

Police investigators discovered all three charges were the cause for the shooting incident.

McBride was previously arrested on a first-degree possession of marijuana, possession of a controlled substance and promoting prison contraband on July 30, 2014. He was able to make a $2,500 bond on those charges, but later had that bond revoked in connection with a August 19, 2014, for second-degree assault and discharging a gun into an occupied vehicle.

Scotland has vowed to offer asylum to gay Ugandans facing life-imprisonment under the country’s new oppressive set of laws.

Humza Yousaf, Scotland’s Minister for External Affairs, announced the plan in an open letter to UK Foreign Secretary William Hague – urging him to follow suit.

It comes just weeks before he is due to meet senior members of the Ugandan government at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this summer.

The anti-homosexuality legislation was enacted earlier this week, strengthening the country’s already strict laws relating to gay people.

President Museveni also ordered one of the country’s newspapers to publish a list of the so-called top 200 homosexuals, including some that had not identified themselves as gay.

Currently, international treaties say people must prove they have a ‘well-founded fear’ of persecution for reasons of race, religion, ethnicity or political opinion if they are to obtain asylum.

Urging Mr Hague to challenge the Commonwealth nation, Mr Yousaf wrote: ‘Scotland will play her part in providing asylum for those seeking refuge from this draconian legislation.’

Today he added: ‘The Scottish Government is deeply concerned the Anti-Homosexuality Bill in Uganda has been signed into law.

‘This is a huge step back for equality and I have written to the UK Government asking them to make the strongest possible representations to the government of Uganda.

‘I have also urged the UK Foreign Secretary to offer asylum to any Ugandans who suffer threat or persecution as a result of the legislation.

‘It goes without saying that Scotland, where possible, will play her part and assist the UK Government in providing asylum for those seeking refuge from this draconian law.’

Uganda is facing an exodus of its gay population if the country presses ahead with a controversial bill that allows life imprisonment for homosexuality.

Gay activists in the country believe that large numbers of Ugandan gays will flee if President Yoweri Museveni fails to veto the bill, which could otherwise become law by the end of next week.

The Ugandan leader has been urged by Britain and other Westerns nations to block the bill, but is under pressure from conservatives in his parliament, which voted by a majority in favour of it in December.

In an interview with The Telegraph, Frank Mugisha, a leading Ugandan gay activist, said that hostility to gays in Uganda had increased since the vote, and that many would leave the country altogether if Mr Museveni failed to exercise his veto. Britain, which ran Ghana as a protectorate until 1962, would be an obvious destination to seek asylum in, both because of its colonial links and its reputation as a liberal country for gays to live in.

Mr Mugisha, who was speaking during a visit to London to lobby the Foreign Office on the matter, said: “The British government should be acting more and talking to our politicians more about the bill. If it is passed there will definitely be consequences for Uganda. Countries like Britain and US will get many Ugandan asylum seekers.”

Mr Mugisha, 32, is the director of Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG), a semi-clandestine network that risks both life and liberty in representing the gay community in Uganda. One of his former colleagues, David Kato, was murdered in 2011, while Mr Mugisha himself has been beaten up in public and thrown in jail many times.

Nonetheless, he and his colleagues regard themselves as part of a growing community not just in Uganda but across Sub-Saharan Africa as a whole. Many say it is a sign of improving living standards in the region’s better-off nations, creating a liberal, Western-leaning middle class that is more open to alternative lifestyles.
