The ECHR held, unanimously, that there had been a violation of the woman’s right to respect for private and family life as part of the European convention on human rights.

Telegram founder Pavel Durov has pledged to strengthen moderation efforts on his social media platform, speaking before a French court on Friday, according to Franceinfo.

The Russian tech mogul, who also holds citizenship in France, the UAE, and St. Kitts and Nevis, was arrested in Paris in August 2024. The French authorities charged him with over a dozen offenses related to illegal content on Telegram, including complicity in the distribution of child pornography and enabling drug trafficking, among other allegations.

Durov was eventually released on bail of €5 million ($5.15 million), but was prohibited from leaving France and required to report to local police twice a week.

During Friday’s hearing, Durov told the court that Telegram is committed to “improving its moderation procedures,” Franceinfo reported. He explained that the platform deletes “between 15 and 20 million user accounts for breaking the law” each month and argued that Telegram is not alone in facing these challenges.

When the judges pointed out that many of these moderation initiatives were launched after his arrest in August, Durov said that only at that point was he made “aware of the seriousness of all these facts.”

The liberal Gaîté Lyrique theatre in Paris hosted a “Reinventing the welcome for refugees in France” conference on December 10, featuring talks from academics from top universities and Red Cross officials,” the Daily Mail reports. The African migrants were enthusiastically welcomed by activists upon arrival, however when the event was done they refused to leave.

This is the same thing that happened to America when we invited these blacks for a cotton-picking event. They refused to leave.

The theatre, owned by Paris’s Socialist-led council, is still occupied as of Tuesday, January 14, and its management has reported that more migrants have shown up to live in the building, increasing the total number of occupants to around 300. It is now facing bankruptcy as it has gone weeks without revenue from ticket sales and has been forced to cancel all shows until at least January 24th.

Management called on local authorities to help find a different housing situation for the migrants. “The sanitary conditions are deteriorating day after day and the teams are facing this situation alone,” it stated. “Although this occupation is forced, it is unthinkable for the Gaîté Lyrique to throw these people out onto the street in the middle of winter.”

One of the managers who is the daughter of Algerian migrants herself stated “They are ruining my business.”

“They hang around outside my terrace, smoking joints and fighting among themselves. Not only do we no longer get theatregoers because the theatre is shut but we don’t get passers-by either. They’re being frightened away by all these young men,” she said.

The Paris council claimed they could not find any other housing options for the migrants and called on the French government to deal with the migrants, however President Emmanuel Macron and his cabinet reportedly ignored the request and do not wish to get involved.

The migrants have all claimed to be unaccompanied minors under the age of 18, however many are known to local authorities who have refuted this. “This is an illegal occupation of a building by recognised migrants,” the regional authorities said in December.

It’s about the worst time he could have died, because he lived to see his daughter ruin his legacy, but not long enough to see her get elected.

Jean-Marie Le Pen, founder of the French far-right Front National party, now known as National Rally (RN), has died at 96.

The founder and longtime leader of the French far-right Front National party, since rebranded as the National Rally (RN), Jean-Marie Le Pen, died on Tuesday, his family said.

He was 96.

In a statement on Tuesday, National Rally called Le Pen a “courageous and talented politician” who “was determined to serve his country without fail.”

Le Pen was a polarising political figure known for his extreme views on immigration, his trademark nationalism and his theatrical oratory skills.

He founded the Front National party in 1972. At first, the party garnered little attention and his own bid for presidency won less than 1% of the vote in 1974.

A decade later, a surge of support saw his party win 10% of the vote in the 1984 European elections, where Le Pen won an MEP seat which he would hold for more than 30 years.

Le Pen said of himself as being: “ni droite, ni gauche, français”, or “not right, not left, French”.

A French court found all 51 defendants guilty on Thursday in a drugging-and-rape case that horrified the world and transformed the victim, Gisele Pelicot, into a stirring symbol of courage and resilience.

Pelicot’s ex-husband of 50 years, Dominique Pelicot, had pleaded guilty to drugging her repeatedly for almost a decade to rape her and to offer up her unconscious body for sex to dozens of strangers he had met online, while videoing the abuse.

A decade.

A panel of five judges sentenced him to the maximum 20 years in jail, as requested by prosecutors.

The court imposed generally shorter terms than the four-to-18 years demanded by the prosecution for the other defendants, almost all of whom were accused of raping the comatose Gisele Pelicot.

In all, the court found 47 of the defendants guilty of rape, two guilty of attempted rape and two guilty of sexual assault.

A cheer went up outside the court in the southern French city of Avignon among the victim’s supporters when news of the first guilty verdicts filtered out.

Many of the accused had denied the charges, saying they thought it was a consensual sex game orchestrated by the couple and arguing that it was not rape if the husband approved.

Dominique Pelicot, 72, denied misleading the men, saying they knew exactly what they were doing. “I am a rapist like the others in this room,” he said during testimony.

Gisele, who is also 72, waived her right to anonymity during the trial and demanded that horrifying videos of the serial abuse, which were recorded by her former husband, should be seen in court, saying she hoped this would help other women speak up.
