U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday rescinded sanctions imposed by the former Biden administration on far-right Israeli settler groups and individuals accused of being involved in violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, the new White House website said.

The website said Trump rescinded Executive Order 14115 issued on Feb. 1, 2024, which authorized the imposition of certain sanctions “on Persons Undermining Peace,Security, and Stability in the West Bank.”

Trump’s decision is a reversal of a major policy action by former President Joe Biden’s administration which had slapped sanctions on numerous Israeli settler individuals and entities, freezing their U.S. assets and generally barring Americans from dealing with them.

As much of the world’s attention has focused on the war in Gaza, growing violence by Israeli settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank and land grabs in the occupied territory have raised concern among some of Israel’s Western allies.

U.S. sanctions on settlers landed after the Biden administration repeatedly urged the Israeli government to take action to hold extremists to account for actions that Washington believes set back hopes for a two-state solution between Israelis and Palestinians.

Since the 1967 Middle East war, Israel has occupied the West Bank of the Jordan River, which Palestinians want as the core of an independent state. It has built Jewish settlements there that most countries deem illegal. Israel disputes this and cites historical and Biblical ties to the land.

Trump’s approach to settlements was significantly different. During his first term in 2019, Trump had abandoned the long-held U.S. position that the settlements are illegal before it was restored by Biden.

The sanctions didn’t even matter. They were a weird “symbolic gesture.” Joe Biden wouldn’t ever have done anything that would be against the will of the Jewish people.

But it is also a “symbolic gesture” for the US to officially signal approval of the genocidal Jew lunatics in the West Bank (even though they are really no different in any way other than branding from the IDF itself).

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has taken new measures to ensure the acceleration of illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank, with minimal US involvement or political approval.

Smotrich has been seeking to expand land seizures throughout occupied Palestinian territory – outlawed under international law – via a new mechanism that will allow for weekly settlement building permits, which previously took months to be approved.

According to the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth (Ynet), these measures have been taken despite US-Israeli tensions over illegal settlements and violent settler activity, as well as guidelines set by the United States that allow Israel to build a few settlements only near the designated “Green Line”.

This 1949 armistice line is an area that separates the Palestinian territories of the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip from Israel.

Ynet reported that Smotrich’s Settlement Administration, which is responsible for land seizures in the West Bank, aims at normalising settlement planning by holding meetings on a weekly basis, where discussions would lead to the approval of new settlements.

In the past, land grabs took months to be approved, and meetings discussing such decisions where held once every three months.

The weekly committee meetings are expected to significantly raise the amount of land seizures in 2025 compared to previous years.

In the past week alone, around 440 housing units were processed to be approved. Moreover, the building of 2,377 units has been advanced by the Supreme Planning Council in just the last six weeks.

Settlement infrastructure, which has been carved out of lands only Israeli citizens are allowed to access, has been described by several human rights groups as a system of apartheid.

The Green Line mentioned in the US regulations on settlements has been hugely controversial among far-right Israelis, who have been outraged by how slow they perceive settlement construction to be.

“It’s absurd that we had to wait long months to promote construction in approved locations and no one was bothered by it. Now, fundamental changes are being made that bring normalcy to half a million residents,” a settlement official told Ynet.

Since the 1967 Middle East war, Israel has decided to omit the Green Line from its maps, making the Palestinian territories it has occupied appear as being part of the state.

Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank are illegal under international law. However, Israel has continued to build settlements across the occupied territory over the past several decades.

Around 700,000 Israeli settlers live in roughly 300 illegal settlements in the West Bank and occupied East Jerusalem, all of which have been built since Israel captured the territories in the 1967 conflict.

Smotrich has been spearheading this trend. In October, he called for an aggressively expansionist Israeli policy, saying the country should expand “little by little” until its borders reach the Syrian capital Damascus.

Meanwhile, on Monday, Israeli Housing Minister Yitzhak Goldakov called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to facilitate the illegal settlement of one million Jews in the occupied West Bank.

Speaking to Hebrew site Bahdrei Haredim, which covers news related to Haredi Jews, Goldakov urged Netanyahu to “bring a million Jews to Judea and Samaria,” the Israeli term for the West Bank.

Husna Ibrahim Arbab had already lost her son in the early days of Sudan’s civil war – burned to death in his tent after it was set on fire – when she was apprehended by militia aligned with the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group while fleeing west towards the border with Chad.

A bullet flew by close to her head, the 24-year-old said. Five male relatives were separated from the group she was travelling with, taken to a creek, and shot in the chest.

Accounts of massacres perpetrated by the RSF and allied Arab militias emerged shortly after war broke out in April 2023 between the RSF and the regular army, the Sudanese Armed Forces, and its allied groups. Much of what the outside world has learned about the atrocities has been relayed by survivors from refugee camps in Adré, across the border in Chad.

Speaking in Adré, Arbab said that sometimes members of her Bargo ethnic group were spared violence, and sometimes they weren’t. “The militia tested us [darker skinned people] on our language,” she said. “If you could speak Bargo then sometimes you were let go. If you couldn’t, you were killed.”

The US said on Tuesday it had determined that genocide was being perpetrated by the RSF and its allies and that it was imposing sanctions on the RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo – known as Hemedti.

The RSF and the SAF have been accused of committing war crimes during the war, which has claimed tens of thousands of lives. The US secretary of state, Antony Blinken, said in a statement that “both belligerents bear responsibility for the violence and suffering in Sudan and lack the legitimacy to govern a future peaceful Sudan”. However, Blinken said the RSF and its allies were responsible for a pattern of systematic ethnic violence in which civilians were killed as they tried to flee fighting and access to essential supplies was blocked.

In 2004, the US had declared that the RSF’s forerunner – the notorious Janjaweed militias – had committed genocide in Darfur in the early 2000s. Then, as now, the violence was directed against darker-skinned, non-Arab groups.

Some of the most serious allegations relating to the RSF have once again focused on Darfur, where up to 15,000 people died in well-documented attacks on the city of Geneina in 2023 that targeted the non-Arab Masalit and other ethnic groups.

Naima Mugadam, another member of the Bargo group, told the Guardian in Adré that two of her brothers had been killed because of their ethnicity in Geneina. The men who killed her brothers also beat her up, she said, leaving her unable to move for three days. “Telling them that I was not a Masalit did not protect me from being attacked,” she said. “I was beaten and humiliated, and lucky not to be raped.”

The number of people killed in Gaza is significantly higher than the figure reported by authorities in the enclave, a peer-reviewed study by researchers from a leading health research university in the UK has found.

According to findings announced by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and published in The Lancet journal, there were an estimated 64,260 “traumatic injury deaths” in Gaza between October 7, 2023 and June 30, 2024. The Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza put the figure at 37,877 at the time.

This means the ministry has underreported the death toll due to violence by approximately 41%, the researchers found. As of October, the number of Gazans killed by violence was thought to exceed 70,000, the study said, based on the estimated underreporting rate.

The total death toll attributable to Israel’s military campaign is likely to be higher still, it said, as its analysis doesn’t account for deaths caused by disruption to health care, insufficient food, clean water and sanitation, and disease outbreaks.

The health ministry’s figure stood at 45,885 on January 7. A further 109,196 have been injured. In general, the ministry reaches its figures by counting the corpses of those killed.

LSHTM said the findings suggest that around 3% of the enclave’s population has died due to violence, 59% of whom were women, children, and the elderly.

The scale of the devastation caused by a lack of water may likely never be fully understood, HRW warned, due to the decimation of Gaza’s health care system including disease tracking.

HRW and Amnesty International have both accused Israel of committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, which Israel strongly denies. Israel has also been taken to the UN’s top court, the International Court of Justice, on allegations of genocide.

Earlier this week, a Palestinian newborn died from hypothermia in Gaza, bringing the total number of babies killed by low temperatures and a lack of access to warm shelters in recent weeks to at least six.

Eight people in total have died of hypothermia, according to health officials in the enclave, including a 2-year-old toddler and a nurse.

Republicans in Congress are taking further steps to ignore Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and start referring to the territory by Israel’s name “Judea and Samaria.”

Senator Tom Cotton proposed a Senate bill Thursday that would eliminate federal use of the term “West Bank,” removing it from all official U.S. government documents. His measure matches a bill that was filed in the House in February by Republican Representatives Claudia Tenney, Randy Weber, and Anthony D’Esposito.

Cotton claims that Judea and Samaria is the historically accurate name for the territory, and asserts Israel’s claims over what is internationally recognized as occupied territory.

“The Jewish people’s legal and historic rights to Judea and Samaria goes back thousands of years. The U.S. should stop using the politically charged term West Bank to refer to the biblical heartland of Israel,” Cotton said in a statement.

The International Court of Justice ruled in July that Israel’s occupation of the West Bank is illegal under international law, calling into question their terminology for the territory. Since Israel began its occupation of Palestine in 1967 following the Six-Day War, Israel has built 160 settlements that house close to 700,000 Jews in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

The Republican-sponsored bills seem to confirm speculation that Israel plans to annex the West Bank with U.S. support. Israel has embarked on a military campaign in the territory, killing nearly 1,000 Palestinians in the West Bank since 2022. Israeli settlers have attacked Palestinian residents in addition to Israeli military raids, and those assaults have increased since Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.

A series of Israeli raids and airstrikes in towns and villages in the occupied West Bank that stretched overnight from Monday into late Tuesday have killed at least eight people, according to Palestinian authorities and local residents.

Two Palestinians were killed in the town of Tamoun, said the governor of nearby Tubas, Ahmad Assad, alleging that one of the bodies was removed from the scene by the Israeli military with a bulldozer. CCTV footage from the neighborhood, seen by CNN, appeared to show a bulldozer moving a body.

In the village of Al-Shuhada, near the city of Jenin, an Israeli airstrike killed two people, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, who were identified by local residents as a man and his nephew. Footage obtained by CNN of the aftermath of the strike shows bloodied footprints smeared along a dusty pathway.

Elsewhere, at least four people were killed in the city of Qabatya, according to the health ministry and emergency responders. Two were killed by Israeli gunfire, and two others killed when an Israeli military vehicle rammed a car and opened fire, according to residents and video seen by CNN.

The bloodshed comes as violence surges in the West Bank, where the Israeli military has intensified incursions following the Hamas-led October 7 attacks.

Since October 7, 2023, Israeli troops and settlers have killed at least 775 Palestinians, including 167 children, in the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem, the Palestinian health ministry reported on Tuesday.

Earlier on Monday, Israeli settlers vandalized and set fire to vehicles in the city of Al-Bireh, in what Ramallah governor Laila Ghannam warned “could have ended in a massacre.”

De Sutter’s remarks come two days after Belgian PM Alexander De Croo called Israel’s actions in Gaza “no longer proportionate.”

The Israeli government in a draft proposal has floated the idea of transferring Gaza’s 2.3 million people to Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula. The proposal has already drawn condemnation and rejection from Palestinians.

Israel’s intelligence ministry on Oct 13 released the draft, offering three alternatives “to effect a significant change in the civilian reality in the Gaza Strip in light of the Hamas crimes that led to the Sword of Iron war.”

What’s the proposal?As per the document, Gaza’s civilian population is to be shifted to tent cities in northern Sinai. Subsequently, they will be moved to permanent cities, while an undefined humanitarian corridor will also be established.
