Strippers in Edinburgh have told Sky News the council’s decision to ban sexual entertainment venues (SEVs) will financially devastate them, as the clubs and the union launch a judicial review to challenge the shutdown of the city’s clubs.

Three Edinburgh clubs (Baby Dolls, The Western and Burke and Hare) and the United Sex Workers (USW) union argue the council vote to limit the number of licensed venues to zero from April 2023 will force the industry underground, making it riskier for the women.

‘It should be my choice’Edinburgh dancer Sasha told Sky News the choice should be hers to make.

“I think it is our right to choose that and I don’t think it’s right for feminists to tell women what they should and shouldn’t be doing with their bodies, what jobs they should do, and what jobs they shouldn’t do,” she said.

“As a parent, I just find it very flexible and there’s a potential for it to be well paid, so it ticks a lot of boxes for me. Particularly the flexibility, the money is never guaranteed, but the flexibility is great.”

Sasha doesn’t believe changing what she does is an option.

“It’s not that easy, we’ve been doing what we’re doing, most of us, for years – and that’s our trade, it’s our industry and that’s what we want to continue doing to make money.”

‘Epitome of the patriarchy’However, for those campaigning for the ban of strip clubs, they say the choice to do this work shouldn’t be available.

Former Labour councillor and writer Susan Dalgety believes the council’s decision is right for women.

“As a feminist, I think that men paying us for sexual favours is the worst kind of exploitation of our bodies,” she said.

“And it is the epitome of the patriarchy that men are much more powerful in society than women, and that all we are there for is either to reproduce the next generation or for the sexual entertainment of men.

“All Edinburgh is doing is saying that in our city we do not want to legitimise sexual entertainment. It’s living pornography.

“It is young women taking their clothes off and dancing sexually for the pleasure of men.”

Ms Dalgety’s views have changed. As a young councillor, she believed such clubs should exist and be properly regulated for the safety of women.

In the 1990s, she voted to licence saunas “knowing full well that they were brothels”.

“Edinburgh was the epicentre of the AIDS epidemic in the UK in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and it was spread through the drug using community,” she said.

“So it was in the heterosexual community and sex workers, unfortunately, were at a much higher risk of it,” Ms Dalgety said, adding the policy choice back then was “a public health decision”, but now she thinks the very existence of any sexual entertainment venue is problematic.

Forcing women into dangerous conditions

Mina from the USW union told Sky News that exploitation isn’t found in the clubs; instead, it is in forcing women into working minimum wage jobs.

“The patriarchy exists across all aspects of society, so clearly stripping is not free from that. However, it is the dancer’s decision to choose that form of work, they’re not being exploited,” she said.

“United Sex Workers take the position that shutting down legal, regulated place of work for dancers who are primarily women would force them to work more dangerous conditions, especially in a cost of living crisis.

“Sex workers are not to be blamed for exploitation of actual violence because it splits women into particles of good and bad. And it’s never that simple, and it’s not fair.”

Previously, sex workers have told Sky News that the cost of living crisis means they are unable to say no to dangerous clients.

A new group of climate activists targeting the owners of sports utility vehicles has set itself up as a friendly rival to the Tyre Extinguishers by deflating the tyres of dozens of vehicles in the suburbs of Glasgow.

In a statement, the group, which calls itself the Deflationists, claimed to have let down the tyres of 50 vehicles in the city’s affluent Newlands area and the neighbouring Shawlands.

Members also put fake parking tickets on the windscreens of the vehicles they targeted, stating that the owners’ “luxury lifestyle choice” had been “disarmed”.

For their part, the Tyre Extinguishers announced that they had “disarmed [deflated] a further 10 SUVs in the Merchiston area of Edinburgh, in the shadow of George Watson’s College, one of Edinburgh’s many elite private schools, where parents pay nearly £15,000 a year for their children’s education”.

The Tyre Extinguishers started their campaign in March, targeting SUVs in some of London’s wealthiest postcodes to protest against emissions from the vehicles, which produce 25% more CO2 on average than a medium-sized car.

The two groups, which often place mung beans or lentils in the valves of tyres to deflate them, say that they want to make SUV ownership impossible in urban areas.

Ally Laing, an activist and a member of the Deflationists, said: “Whilst politicians snub meaningful climate action, we’re putting public safety and our climate obligations first by holding the rich to account, whose grotesque lifestyles imperil people and planet.”

Another activist, Carrie Adams, said: “These vehicles, put simply, are intolerable acts of violence and we will continue taking action until these monstrosities are off our streets.”

Despite more than half of Glaswegian households not having a car, Glasgow frequently violates standards of air quality. Hope Street in Glasgow is Scotland’s most polluted street.

SUVs were the second largest contributor to the increase in global carbon emissions from 2010 to 2018. Each year SUVs emit 700 megatonnes of CO2 worldwide, about the entire output of the UK and the Netherlands combined. If all SUV drivers banded together to form their own country, it would rank as the seventh largest emitter in the world.

The targeting of vehicles in Glasgow comes a day after police faced calls to take action against the Tyre Extinguishers for their campaign in Edinburgh, where they say they have targeted more than 200 SUVs across the Portobello, Leith, Merchiston, Marchmont and New Town areas.

One Edinburgh councillor has claimed that the group’s actions amount to harassment, after activists said they intended to target the same vehicles more than once.

Over the past three months, the movement to deflate the tyres of SUVs has spread beyond the UK, with vehicles targeted in Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, the Netherlands, New Zealand and the US.

These weather changer psychos are just annoying terrorists.

An Australian girl who loves multiculturalism and parties with homos got her just desserts when she was rejected on an application for an apartment by a landlord in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The landlord, who is even more of a liberal cuck than her, denied the backpacker’s application inquiry arguing that “Australians are racist.” This in itself could be construed as an act of bigotry and discrimination, but only in a sane world.

An Australian backpacker was left shocked after she was told she could not rent a flat in Edinburgh because people from her country are ‘drunks and racists’.

Laura Gratton, 24, saw the £400-a-month room advertised online and inquired about the possibility of living there having recently moved to Scotland for the first time.

But the landlord turn down her request straight away – saying that ‘it is well known that Australians are racist’ and she would therefore not be a good housemate.

And after Miss Gratton – who is working in a restaurant in Edinburgh – pointed out that she is friends with people from all around the world, the man again insisted that ‘Australia is the most racist nation’.

Outraged at the response, Miss Gratton wrote to him saying: ‘You obviously are quite racist putting such labels and speculations on a whole race without knowing the individual.

‘The majority of my closest friends are from across the globe so would hate to think I’m racist. So thank you for rejecting this email, I don’t think we would get along at all. And I suggest you actually visit Australia and realise how multicultural we are.’

But the landlord then sent her a link to a news report about racism in Australia, adding: ‘Hi, I’m not judging a whole race. I don’t want to take the risk. It is fact Australia is the most racist nation, your people are so open about it as well.

‘This is what you Australians are known for in Europe. I think we would still get along by the way. Anyway, good luck.’

Miss Gratton said afterwards: ‘When I first received the response I thought it was just a joke but then I realised that he was being serious.

Sorry Lozza, but your ‘non-racist’ credentials won’t cut it in a city like Edinburgh where the true natives are black and brown and smell of curry and Moslem bath houses.

A MAN who was “overcome by sexual lust” raped a sleeping woman after she went to bed in a spare room.

Afolabi Awodiya, 34, attacked his victim after she had returned to the flat in Lochend following a night out with a friend.

The Nigerian, who admitted to police that he entered Britain illegally in 2007, had denied carrying out the rape on the woman while she was asleep and incapable of consent.

But a jury at the High Court in Edinburgh today convicted him of carrying out the sex attack on the 20-year-old victim.

DNA matching that of the woman was found on him after swabs were taken and the victim was discovered to have a fresh injury.

Awodiya slumped forward in the dock after the verdict was announced and was led away to the cells in tears repeatedly saying: “They set me up.”

The court heard that Awodiya knew his victim was due to be staying overnight at his former flat in Hawkhill Close on February 17 last year.

Advocate depute Jane Farquharson told jurors that Awodiya appeared to have been “overcome by sexual lust” and was perhaps emboldened by drink.

The prosecutor told the court that the woman “had never shown the slightest bit of romantic interest in the accused”.

Defence solicitor advocate Jim Keegan QC said Awodiya would become the subject of attention from the UK Border Agency and added: “The consequences for him will be severe.”

The judge, Lord Uist, said that as Awodiya had no previous record he would require to get a background report before sentencing him in April.

He placed him on the sex offenders’ register and ordered he be remanded in custody ahead of sentencing.
