A student at the Georgia Institute of Technology died early Sunday after police shot him on campus the previous evening — when they said he refused officers’ orders to drop a knife he was holding.

Scout Schultz, 21, was pronounced dead early Sunday morning after he was taken to the hospital, Fox 5 Atlanta reported. Georgia Tech police were called to West Campus residential community after a person called 911 claiming someone with a knife and gun was near the campus. It was not clear if investigators ever found a gun.

Schultz, a fourth-year computer engineering major and the president of the Georgia Tech Pride Alliance, allegedly was armed with a knife and refused to put the weapon down when officers urged him multiple times to do so. Videos taken by witnesses showed Schultz, who appeared to be barefoot, holding an object in his right hand, WSB-TV reported. He then was seen yelling, “shoot me” to the officers.

Another video showed Schultz walking forward before an officer fired his gun at Schultz. Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Nelly Miles said the officer shot the student after he “continued to advance on the officers with the knife.”

As the situation was unfolding, Georgia Tech issued a “seek shelter” alert to campus students until further notice. It advised students to lock all windows and doors. The alert was lifted around midnight Sunday, saying there was “no longer a threat to campus.”

The city’s mayor, Anne Hidalgo, and the former French president François Hollande attended the wedding on Tuesday of Etienne Cardiles to the late Xavier Jugelé.

Jugelé, 37, was shot dead on 20 April while on duty three days before the first round of France’s presidential election.

He had campaigned for LGBT rights within the police service.

The “rights” he campaigned for and the thing that killed him are both symptoms of the same (((disease))) .

At a moving remembrance ceremony led by Hollande on 25 April, Cardiles said the killer would “not have my hatred”, echoing the words of the husband of a victim of the November 2015 attacks in Paris.

“I have no hatred, Xavier, because it is not like you and does not fit with what made your heart beat nor what made you a guardian of the peace,” Cardiles said.

Jugelé was the fifth police officer killed in terrorist attacks that have claimed more than 230 lives across France since January 2015.

Hollande posthumously made him a knight of the Legion of Honour, one of France’s highest honours.

He got it for the buttsex, not for dying on duty, trust me.

Shortly after Jugelé’s death it emerged that he had been among the first responders to the attack on the Bataclan theatre in Paris in November 2015 , where gunmen killed 90 concertgoers.

He returned to the venue a year later when it reopened for a concert by the British singer Sting, telling a BBC interviewer at the time that he wanted “to celebrate life and say ‘no’ to terrorism”.

Pop superstar George Michael’s death at the age of 53 from suspected heart failure is being treated by police as “unexplained but not suspicious”.

The singer died peacefully at home, his family said on Sunday night.

“It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period,” Michael’s family said in a statement released by Thames Valley Police.

“The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage.”

Michael died at his home in Goring-on-Thames. His publicist, Cindi Berger, said he had not been ill. Michael’s manager, Michael Lippman, says the cause of death was heart failure.
