The Biden administration is proposing a rule that would provide women with private insurance access to over-the-counter birth control pills and other contraceptives at no cost, the White House said on Monday.

The rule, which expands a federal mandate requiring health insurers to cover preventative care services at no cost to patients under the Affordable Care Act, is being proposed by the Departments of Health and Human Services, Labor, and the Treasury and would come into effect in 2025 if finalized.

“This rule, once finalized, will expand contraception coverage for 52 million women of reproductive age with private health insurance,” White House Gender Policy Council Director Jennifer Klein said during a briefing.

“For the first time ever, women would be able to obtain over-the-counter contraception without a prescription at no additional cost, and health plans would have to cover even more prescribed contraceptives without cost sharing,” she said.

Perrigo Co’s, opens new tab Opill is currently the only daily birth control pill approved for sale without a prescription by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, but the proposed rule covers other forms of over-the-counter contraceptives, including emergency contraception such as morning after pill Plan B, spermicides, birth control sponges, and condoms.

The rule will also require that health plans cover all FDA-approved contraceptive drugs and some devices, including IUDs, without cost sharing in many cases.

Canada’s birth rate is continuing to plummet, reaching yet another all-time low.

According to Statistics Canada’s latest births and stillbirths’ data released on September 25, in 2023 10 of the 13 provinces and territories recorded a new record low birth rate, with the national average clocking in at just 1.26 children per woman.

Characterizing the new data, Statistics Canada announced that the country has “joined the group of ‘lowest-low’ fertility countries, including South Korea, Spain, Italy, and Japan, with 1.3 children per woman or less.”

By comparison, the United States’ overall fertility rate was 1.62 per woman in 2023.

When looking at the data, the province of British Columbia had the lowest fertility rate at 1.00 children per woman. The province with the highest fertility rate was Saskatchewan, which still stood at a low figure of 1.63. The northern territory of Nunavut had the highest birth rate out of any major jurisdiction in the country, at 2.48.

Nunavut is only 10% white, over 80% Injun.

As for the other provinces, Quebec’s birth rate came in at 1.38, with Ontario’s at 1.22, Alberta’s at 1.41, and Manitoba’s at 1.52. Atlantic provinces’ rates were extremely low, with Nova Scotia’s clocking in at just 1.05 births per woman.

In order for a country to maintain its population, the birth rate must be 2.0 or higher, with it needing to be at least 2.1 births per woman for a nation to grow irrespective of immigration.

The statistics also revealed that not only are Canadian women not having babies but when they do, they are older than before. The average age of first-time mothers is now 31.5 years, up from 27.5 in 1991.

In total, there were 351,878 babies born in Canada in 2023, a number that would be much greater if not for abortion. For context, in 2022, 97,211 Canadian babies were killed by abortion.

Free contraception will be available to women up to the age of 35 from 1 July, it was announced today.

Health Minister Stephen Donnelly said that free contraception will now be available for women aged 17 to 35.

New Zealand’s fertility rate slumped to a record low in 2023, official data shows, as the total number of births also dropped.

The fertility rate tracks the average number of births women will have in their lifetime. New Zealand, along with many countries around the world, has seen this number drop as factors like education, participation in the workforce, and access to contraception contribute to women having fewer children.

The combination of fewer births and more women in the population led to the fertility rate hitting a record low of 1.56 births per woman. In 2022, the rate was 1.66, and it remains far below the 2.1 needed to replace population numbers in the long term.

Women taking oral contraceptive pills may have an increased risk of depression — especially shortly after starting on the pill.

That’s one of the findings from a large study of more than 264,000 women, which also finds that teenage girls are at the highest risk.

In fact, women who were teenagers when they began to use birth control pills had a 130% higher rate of depression.

The increased rate among adult users was 92%, according to the study authors.

“The powerful influence of contraceptive pills on teenagers can be ascribed to the hormonal changes caused by puberty,” Therese Johansson, of the Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University in Sweden, said in a news release.

“As women in that age group have already experienced substantial hormonal changes, they can be more receptive not only to hormonal changes but also to other life experiences,” Johansson added.

This new study, published in Epidemiology and Psychiatric Sciences, adds to previous research that found a link between oral contraceptive use and depression.

A 2016 report in JAMA Psychiatry revealed that the use of hormonal contraceptives was often linked to a subsequent use of prescription antidepressants or a diagnosis of depression.

And in 2019, another study found that 16-year-old girls taking oral contraceptives reported more crying, sleep irregularities and eating problems than teenage girls of the same age who didn’t use oral contraceptives.

The latest study used data from the UK Biobank, a biomedical database with genetic and health information from more than half a million participants across the UK.

The researchers studied combination contraceptive pills, which contain progestogen, a compound resembling the hormone progesterone, and estrogen.

The study revealed that the increase in rates of depression declined when women continued using contraceptive pills after the first two years.

But teenage users of contraceptive pills still had an increased rate of depression even after they stopped using the pill. That effect was not seen in adult users of the pill.

Taliban fighters have stopped the sale of contraceptives in two of Afghanistan’s main cities, claiming their use by women is a western conspiracy to control the Muslim population.

The Guardian has learned that the Taliban has been going door to door, threatening midwives and ordering pharmacies to clear their shelves of all birth control medicines and devices.

“They came to my store twice with guns and threatened me not to keep contraceptive pills for sale. They are regularly checking every pharmacy in Kabul and we have stopped selling the products,” said one store owner in the city.

A veteran midwife, who did not want to be named, said she had been threatened several times. She said she was told by a Taliban commander: “You are not allowed to go outside and promote the western concept of controlling population and this is unnecessary work.”

Other pharmacists in Kabul and Mazar-i-Sharif confirmed that they have been ordered not to stock any birth control medicines.

“Items such as birth control pills and Depo-Provera injections are not allowed to be kept in the pharmacy since the start of this month, and we are too afraid to sell the existing stock,” another shop owner in Kabul said.

It is the latest attack on women’s rights by the Taliban who, since coming to power in August 2021, have ended higher education for girls, closed universities to young women, forced women out of their jobs and restricted their ability to leave their homes. Restricting contraceptives will be a significant blow in a country with an already fragile healthcare system.

One in every 14 Afghan women dies of causes related to pregnancy and it is one of the most dangerous countries in the world to give birth.

The Taliban’s Ministry of Public Health in Kabul has not issued any official statement on the issue and the UNFPA representative in Afghanistan did not respond to requests for comment.

Taliban fighters patrolling in the streets in Kabul told sources that “contraceptive use and family planning is a western agenda”.

For Zainab, 17, who was married two years ago in the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif, the ban on contraceptives was a shock when she was told by her midwife last week.

Zainab, who has an 18-month-old daughter, is worried. “I was secretly using contraceptives to avoid immediate pregnancy. I want to raise my daughter well with proper health and education facilities but it shattered my dreams when the midwife last week informed me that she had no contraceptive pills and injections to offer me,” she said.

“I left education to get married and I don’t want my daughter’s fate to be the same as mine. I seek a different future for my daughter. The last hope to plan my life has ended,” said Zainab.

Shabnam Nasimi, an Afghan-born social activist in the UK, said: “The Taliban’s control not only over women’s human right to work and study, but now also over their bodies, is outrageous.

“It is a fundamental human right to have access to family planning and contraception services free of coercion. Such autonomy and agency are essential components of women’s rights such as the right to equality, non-discrimination, life, sexual health, reproductive health, and other basic human rights.”

Young French women will be offered free contraception from next year, the health minister has announced.

Olivier Véran said those under 25 would not be charged for medical appointments, tests, or other medical procedures related to birth control.

“This will cover hormonal contraception, biological tests that go with it, the prescription of contraception and all care related to this contraception up until the age of 25,” the minister said in an interview with France 2.

“There is a decline in the use of contraception among a certain number of young women and the main reason for this is financial. It costs too much. It is unacceptable that women cannot protect themselves, cannot have contraception if that’s their choice obviously, because they cannot afford it,” Véran added.

Asked why the government had chosen 25 as the cut-off age, Véran said it was because this corresponded to an age of more autonomy and because at 25 people were no longer covered by their parents’ complementary health insurance, called a mutuelle.

He said studies had shown this was also the age that many women were dropping contraception, not because they wanted to have children but “because it is expensive”.

The measure, which covers the pill, IUD devices and contraceptive implants, is expected to cost France’s health system, the Assurance Maladie, about €21m a year.

Contraception has been free in France for those aged between 15 and 18 since 2013 and for the under-15s since August 2020. This has led to a drop in the number of abortions.

The government announced last year that almost 1,000 girls aged between 12 and 14 become pregnant in France and 770 of those pregnancies result in an abortion.

Researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have developed a new pill that slowly releases a contraceptive drug over the course of 29 days in tests using pigs.

This is accomplished in part through the innovative design of a capsule that slowly unfolds inside the stomach.

It is made out of plastic so it can stay in the digestive tract for about a month, slowly releasing sterilization doses.

Missed doses of daily pills are a risk factor for unintended pregnancy, a public health concern most experts say is best combated with adoption of long-acting contraceptives.

Women bear the brunt of the burden of preventing unintended pregnancy in the US and around the world.

That’s like saying that women bear the brunt of the burden of taking care of their own bodies.

They are the ones with wombs and they are supposedly capable humans with agency and stuff, so why should the prevention of unwanted pregnancies be the responsibility of anyone else?

Unintended pregnancy fuels a cycle of poverty and is estimated to cost American taxpayers $21 billion, according to a 2015 Guttmacher Institute estimate.

Currently, nearly half – 45 percent – of pregnancies in the US are unintended.

If women are that unable to take care of their own bodies and prevent themselves from getting pregnant when they don’t want to be, then we should stop pretending that they have bodily autonomy.

The first challenge that faced the MIT team was keeping the capsule intact long enough in the stomach to continue to release all of its medication at once.

By the end of two weeks, earlier iterations of the capsules had disintegrated.

The scientists went back to the drawing board and came up with a different pill using tougher polyeurothane – rubber-like material – formed into the shape of a star.

By creating, effectively, medical origami, the researchers were able to protect the medication from the harsh environment of the stomach.

It was able to withstand a whole month inside the digestive system.

Slowly the star-shaped drug unfolded, making it lodge into place, where it delivered the contraceptive to the pigs used in the study for nearly a month.

Once it’s ready for human use, the drug will be made in such a way that it simply goes the way of anything else we consume and no longer need: through the digestive tract and out.

On the one hand, women are encouraged to slut around and have random sexual encounters. On the other hand, they are also encouraged to work and to avoid motherhood.

The problem is that women are too dumb to avoid pregnancies on their own, even with all of the current contraceptive methods available to them.

To “fix” that, we’re going to see more and more foolproof methods getting further fool-proofed until they’re so fool-proofed that they can be considered retard-proofed.

The study’s lead author, Alexander Lischke, said: ‘More than 100 million women use oral contraceptives, but remarkably little is known about their effects on cognition, emotion and behaviour.’

A 2016 study at the University of Copenhagen of more than a million women found a clear link between hormonal contraception and subsequent diagnoses of depression. Those using the combined pill were 23 per cent more likely to be diagnosed with depression and those on the mini-pill 34 per cent more likely.

Teenagers had an 80 per cent increased risk of depression on the combined pill, and this risk was even higher with the mini-pill. Other forms of hormonal contraception were even worse.

Another study by the same researchers in 2018 found that hormonal contraception use tripled the risk of suicide. The study looked at more than 475,000 women with no pre-existing psychiatric problems over eight years. Again, teenagers were particularly affected.

Girls are put on the pill from an early age for whatever reason doctors can think of. From “just in case” and “to fight acne” to “to make periods less painful.”

Triona first took the Pill aged 15 —with her parents’ consent — because she was experiencing severe period pain, and this can be alleviated by going on the Pill.

Within two months, she says she went from being ‘bubbly and sparkly’ to feeling she ‘couldn’t put one foot in front of the other’.

Should we be putting hormones in bodies that haven’t fully developed naturally? No one has done an in-depth study on what happens after a decade or so when pubescent girls start taking the pill compared to what happens when they don’t.

But the experimental pill has at least one of the same problems that plague female birth control pills: it caused the men to gain weight. It’s also not yet clear how well it works.

Even though the researchers said they were “very excited” by the results, they haven’t been testing it long enough to show whether it decreases sperm production, and they haven’t shown whether it stops couples from conceiving.

Nonetheless, it may be the best hope yet for a non-permanent male contraceptive, said Stephanie Page of the University of Washington School of Medicine.

“Our last great advance in male contraception was 300 years ago with the development of the condom,” Page told a news conference.

I would say that the last great advance in male contraception was 50 years ago, with the development of anime.

The pill Page’s team tested is called dimethandrolone undecanoate (DMAU) and it‘s tweaked version of previous failed efforts to develop a male pill. It is being developed with funding from the National Institutes of Health.

The last big hope for a male birth control pill fell apart in 2016 when the drug was shown to damage the liver. It also required two doses a day.”It’s hard enough to remember to take a pill once a day,” Page said.

Her team tested 100 male volunteers and came up with good results from 82 of them. Some got sugar pills and the rest got varying doses of DMAU.

“Individuals on all the doses had remarkably low testosterone levels,” Page said. And the levels recovered within days of stopping the pills, the team told a meeting in Chicago of the Endocrine Society.

Notice how she says that like it’s a feature.
